METS, YANKS AFTER GAGNE
By JOEL SHERMAN

July 29, 2007 -- The Yankees and Mets join the Red Sox as the teams still trying to land Rangers closer Eric Gagne as the trade deadline nears, The Post has learned.
However, neither the Yankees nor Mets seem willing to give up a significant prospect for a player who can be a free agent after the season. The Rangers have not found any team's offer particularly alluring, and are contemplating keeping Gagne and trying to sign him beyond this season. The Tigers, who long had been viewed as the frontrunners to get him, are no longer considered serious suitors and could be looking for an alternative who would not cost as much in prospects, such as the Yankees' Kyle Farnsworth.

Gagne has indicated he only wants to go to a team on which he can close. He has a $6 million contract, plus the chance to make an additional $5 million in games-finished bonuses. He already has earned $1.35 million of that. If he were to go to the Yankees, who have Mariano Rivera, or the Mets, who have Billy Wagner, he would not close, and, therefore, would all but forfeit the $3.65 million still left in games-finished provisions.

Gagne has a list of 12 teams to which he can be traded without seeking his permission, and the Mets and Yankees are both on that list, so he cannot block a trade to them. The Red Sox, however, are not and have Jonathan Papelbon closing.

After injuries limited Gagne to 16 games in 2005-06, the right-hander has gone 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA and 16 saves in 17 tries going into last night.

The Yanks are desperate to find a reliable bridge to Rivera, but GM Brian Cashman has been extremely protective of the farm system. Mets GM Omar Minaya also has been protective of his best prospects.

It'd be a great pick up. He'd be a shutdown 8th inning guy. Isn't he a Type-A free agent? I'm positive he'd be great for us this year, and if we re-sign him great, but if we don't we get two high draft picks.

I say Humber, B- prospect for Gagne.

And, finally, the hot, completely unsubstantiated rumor floating around my workplace was that the Mets and D-Rays were discussing a Lastings Milledge and "a Minor League pitcher" (probably Pelfrey, maybe Humber) for Carl Crawford. It didn't pass my smell test -- I'd think Tampa would command a lot more for their stud outfielder -- but it's fun to think about regardless. Plus, for what it's worth, a Met scout was spotted at Tropicana Field last week.

Give me a chance at Crawford over Gagne anyday. I personally thought Gagne was on steroids the year he won the CY young award. After the steroid talks came up after that he has been frequently injured, sucky and not a player I want here. A healthy Sanchez is all we need out of the bullpen, im not giving up Pelfrey or Humber for him...

i do believe gagne was on steroids. but we aren't going to see duaner sanchez again this year. we need that 8th inning guy. i think gagne would be a great fit. i wouldn't sign him back past this year, and from there we can get two high picks in the draft (which would hopefully replace the void left of the prospect [s] givin up).

I'd do a three team trade.
Mets receieve: Edwin Jackson, Eric Gagne, Al Reyes
Texas receieve: Elijah Dukes, Carlos Pena
Tampa Bay recieve: Phillip Humber, Mike Carp, and Eric Hurley (Rangers prospect)

something like that.

Mets receieve: Edwin Jackson, Eric Gagne, and Gerald Laird
Texas receieve: Elijah Dukes, Carlos Pena, Kevin Mulvey.
Tampa Bay recieve: Phillip Humber, Mike Carp, and Eric Hurley (#2 Rangers prospect)

This works for all teams because:
Mets get a young pitcher in EJ with a lot of potential, and can be the OP of next season. They get Gagne who will be the Duaner Sanchez of last year (aslong as he's healthy), and Gerald Laird who can be the replacement for Lo Duca next year/free up space for Salty.

Texas gets Carlos Pena to replace MT, Elijah Dukes who can become their starting CF asap, and Mulvey which is a young SP prospect they are always looking for.

Devil Rays get two very good SP prospects. They can go in right now and help their bullpen, and then next year help their starting pitching. They also have Mike Carp who can help replace Pena and be insurance for later on.

Mets trade Mulvey, Humber and Carp for Gagne, EJ, Laird.
Rangers trade Laird, Hurley, Gagne for Dukes, Mulvey, Pena.
Devil Rays trade EJ, Pena, ED for Humber, Carp and Hurley.

it's not that bad of a deal for all teams. and helps everyone. NYM can re-tool their farm system since Gagne is a type-a FA, and they won't sign him next year, and Heilman is also a type a (or b) so they also get draft picks out of that.
