Barton to Oakland?

Post#1 » by Mr.Raptorsingh » Sat Jul 28, 2007 5:34 pm

We all know Daric Barton is the top prospect in the A's organization. He's basically ready for the show as far as hitting is concerned. So who is blocking his pathway to the Big Leagues? Dan Johnson. Dan Johnson has not been in the line-up for the past 4 games. It appears Dan Johnson will soon get moved.

Also here's a little signal for y'all to ponder, Daric Barton was not in the Sacramento Rivercats' line-up last night, maybe Daric Barton has a one-way ticket to Seattle?

This much I do know, it will not be long before we see Daric Barton in an Oakland A's uniform, maybe as early as next week, if not sooner.

Mike Piazza was also not in Oakland's line-up last night, but he was seen in the dugout. I find it awfully strange that Bob Geren would sit Mike Piazza when the A's are trying to increase his trade value, and more importantly trying to win some games against an AL West rival. So I have to ask, what's going on, Billy!!!?

Could Mike Piazza and Dan Johnson be moved this weekend? Could the Daric Barton era begin this weekend? I think so....what y'all think?

it would be very foolish to start barton's clock now. he's not coming up until september call ups.

^Yes, it looks like he will be a September call-up. If the A's are not going to call-up Daric Barton, they should call-up some other guys so the A's can get a look at them in the majors. Jason Perry is a guy I would like to see get a chance. Dan Meyer definitely should get a look, as he has been pretty good lately. Actually he has been very good. Maybe the A's should give a look to Double AA prospects or at the very least move them up to Triple AAA. Richie Robnett is a guy who is loaded w/ potential and I think he is in the A's plan as well. He could very well be in the big leagues at the start of 08' just like Travis Buck.

But overall, I think the A's September call-ups should be Jason Perry, Dan Meyer, Daric Barton, J.D Closser, Jeremy Brown, Brad Knox.

Barton has been a beast in AAA recently. He carried the Rivercats to the PCL finals by having a monster series in the first round vs the Bees (Angels). Not suprising at all to see him get called up.

BTW if u like minor league baseball follow the Rivercats for the next week or so in the PCL Finals. Amazing how far they have gotten considering their have been more than 180 transactions for them this year.

Wouldn't be suprised to see a starting pitcher get called up, maybe Komine again, maybe Blevins if he stays on a roll. Jeremy Brown has been on and off and defensively hasn't has a great year from what I've heard but I could be wrong. He's got power, probably same as Suzuki though.

^Fola, I read that you have seen a lot of James Simmons. What you think of him? What is his stuff like? Can he be a No. 1 Starter? Feedback appreciated.

^Yea I'm a senior at UC Riverside so I got to see all of Simmons' home starts last year. He really led us to the conference championship in a baseball powerhouse conference (Big West).

Interesting anecdote about him...the team had a draft party type thing at this sports bar and I was talking with one of the players (Dan Runzler who got drafted by the Giants I think) who told me that Simmons didn't even look at the scouting report for his game against Nebraska in the NCAA tournament. He also said he doesn't know if Simmons ever looks at scouting reports. He just goes after whoever, wherever they are in the lineup, whatever the situation.

I don't know if never looking at scouting reports is a good thing or not, but I guess it shows he is fearless. That's how I would describe Simmons. He's a fastball/changeup guy, great command, fantastic K/BB ratio. Attacks the strike zone, managed to keep his pitch count down and always go deep into games. I would sit next to the intern with the speed gun and most of the time Simmons' fastball would clock at 89-92. I think the coaches expect him to to get that up to maybe 94 when he is older. He gets in to trouble sometimes when batters are first pitch swinging or just hitting his fastball. I should note though that I havent seen him play obviously since he was drafted, I was hoping he would make it to AAA Sacramento because that is my hometown.

No. 1 starter? I hope so. He needs to develop the curveball or slider, and he needs to change speeds better to have success in the majors IMO. I think he can do that though.
The organization put him in AA Midland and I don't know if thats a good thing also. He has struggled sometimes, and maybe it would have been better to work him up from A to help his confidence. I don't know how the A's intend to use him, seeing as he has only had 2 short starts so far. You can check his stats on minorleaguebaseball.com.

Sorry if that was too long.
