ATL Week 11 - RIP Terry Glenn

Post#1 » by Prickle » Fri Nov 17, 2017 11:34 am

Forgive me if this has already been a thread topic, but I just need to vent on this subject....

The TD celebrations this year have turned the league into an absolute joke. It's simply embarrassing, at this point. I literally cringe every single time I see a touchdown now, for I know that some ridiculous, forced antics will likely ensue.

You may say, "lighten up, they're just letting the players have fun again?" Since when was playing football not fun enough in itself? Since when was scoring a touchdown not gratifying enough? I'm all for letting the players show raw emotion after a big play or score, but these celebrations couldn't be any farther from "emotion." These phony celebrations are nothing but a bunch of choreographed routines, charades, and miming, and it's not a good look for any professional athlete, particularly football players who play an extremely physical game dependent on heart, will, and brute force.

I, like many of you, have played sports for most of my life. And I, like you, obviously enjoy watching sports as well. Now tell me, what is the typical reaction of someone who has either just made a great play, or even watched their favorite team make a great play? The answers are very similar. Typical emotional reactions would be to: throw your hands in the air; pump your fist; yell at the top of your lungs; jump up and down; high five; etc. You know what isn't a typical emotional reaction? Joining five other grown men in a game of f*cking duck, duck, goose!

I can't even imagine what a lot of the older, ex-players think of this. I'd bet that many of them are disgusted. I know that the game has changed, and it's become a lot softer than the "good old days", but these celebrations are turning it into a mockery.

And before someone inevitably posts the "you must be fun at parties" meme, just don't. Give it up. If to you, a fun party involves grown men playing hopscotch, or double dutch, or whatever, then maybe you and I have entirely different ideas or definitions of what a fun party is.

Eh, I don't really care what they do. Some are funny, most are dumb (shrug).
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Quite strong language to be using to describe a 5 second celebration. If you literally cringe every time you see a TD now, sorry, you may not want to hear it (as you made clear), but you are taking it too seriously.

I think they're dumb, but I also just don't care enough to get that worked up over it.

Same...they're dumb, but who cares? I think opening the floodgates shed some light on how dumb they are and it'll probably be old hat in 2-3 years and maybe only the good ones will show through again.

Also, on the whole they're fine and yeah, should not have been legistlated.

Some of them don't come together well. But, on balance, I think they're pretty entertaining, and it was pretty stupid that the league legislated against them for so many years.

I think a lot of these are lame as hell and reeks of the XFL, but the NFL brought this upon themselves by being ridiculous by penalizing guys previous, now the pendulum has swung the other way.

It's kind of amazing that Goodell is looking for 50M when you have so many issues with the NFL right now (not that the TD thing is one of them).

I'm turning this into the Week 11 ATL thread.

Looks like Jameis was back at it again. Jameis sexually assaulting another woman after getting away with it at FSU? I'm shocked, I tell you! Shocked!

Also, read this excellent piece from Don Van Natta and Seth Wickersham about the civil war breaking out inside the NFL. Just a taste:

It was Aug. 9, inside Roger Goodell's sixth-floor office at the NFL's Park Avenue headquarters in New York City -- down the hall, past the executives' offices and his assistant's desk, and through a large, thick wooden door that is both imposing and usually left open to serve as a welcome. Goodell huddled over a speakerphone with general counsel Jeff Pash. On the other end was Jerry Jones. Adhering to the protocol of giving owners a 48-hour heads-up before a major disciplinary issue involving their team is announced, Goodell and Pash informed Jones that after a 13-month domestic violence inquiry, the Dallas Cowboys' star running back, Ezekiel Elliott, would face punishment -- a six-game suspension.

The line went quiet. Seconds passed. Goodell's decision was an unconscionable violation of trust, Jones later told associates, because he believed that the commissioner had assured him this past spring that there would be no suspension. Jones saw in Elliott a genuine opportunity, a player so good that he had made Jones believe that this year he just might win a Super Bowl for the first time since 1996. His anger was palpable. Finally, according to sources with direct knowledge of the call, Jones broke the silence. He aimed his words not only at Goodell's decision but also at his role as judge, jury and executioner in the case.

"I'm gonna come after you with everything I have," Jones said. Then he mentioned Deflategate. "If you think Bob Kraft came after you hard, Bob Kraft is a p---y compared to what I'm going to do."

The celebrations are dumb, but I don’t mind them. It’s better than watching a doofus celebrate after just getting a 1st down or defending a pass.

It’s just another indication that the league is in decline.

No, these "celebrations" are not THAT big of deal in the grand scheme of things, but I do find them to be incredibly irritating, so please excuse the aggressive tone of my original post. Like I said, I was "venting."

However, I'll admit that I expected a lot more people to agree with me on this topic, so I'm a bit surprised to find myself in the minority. I know that the casual fans out there eat this type of sh*t up (the more antics and dancing, etc., the better), but I was unaware that a lot of the diehard football fans did too. Oh well...

Obviously, this is a "me" problem, so I'll try my best to remain indifferent this Sunday when I see the next batch of clever and thoroughly entertaining routines.

Yeah, obviously Barry was on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, and guys like him have been few and far between. I'm not saying that all players should all adopt his approach, by any means, but there's gotta be a happy medium between his "act like you've been there before" approach, and six guys playing leapfrog. Apparently the '90s were a longer time ago than I even imagined.

Can you picture Favre, Sharpe, Bennett, and Chmura playing a game of duck, duck, goose after a TD?

Can you picture Montana, Rice, Taylor, and Craig playing leapfrog after a TD?

How about Aikman, Irvin, Smith, and Novacek? Well, I could maybe see Irvin being down, lol, but anyways...

I could go back to the '80s, '70s, and '60s and the examples would be even more ridiculous, but you get the point. The game has definitely changed...

Agree. Now how long before the pendulum just, you know....stops? We may see an 11-man dance routine before the season is over. Can't wait!

I agree with you 100% Prickle. Honestly I wish everyone took the "I've been there before approach" to TD celebrations like Barry did. Some call it boring, I call it sportsmanship.

Someone is going to tear an ACL or pull a muscle celebrating at some point. It's bound to happen.

As Mickey said, some are fun. Most are lame. Don't really care either way. I hope those celebrations aren't keeping you up all night Mr. Pickle.

The NFL is the new WWE. ‘Reality’ TV sport.

The only consolation to this is that even if Rodgers never gets hurt we're probably still a wild card even with an 11-5 record.

And it would be cool to see the Patriots destroy the Vikings in the Super Bowl, in Minnesota.
