Use Porzingis as a spot up shooter, run more pick and roll with Kanter. That way you are forcing the Raptors to guard the perimeter. I wouldn't even waste KPs energy forcing him to fight for position on the block because we all know what the Raps are gonna do anyway. They will trap him as soon as he starts going into his move but they are quick to rotate so it's gonna be tough getting good shots off that way.

Camp Porzingis on the outside, I don't care if he launches 10 three's, let him! Make Kanter the primary pick and roll big and feed him when he's in the paint. Make Kanter be the guy that they have to force the double team on. They won't be able to handle him and our shooters can get plenty of good looks as long as everybody is in their right spots.

I was glad Jeff said we weren't moving the ball enough to start last game because sometimes it looks like our plan is to iso KP over & over which is not working against better defensive teams. Need to make Raptors work on defense.

What would aid that adjustment is KP upping his passing game.

When he is on the perimeter facing the rim his height gives him a vantage point like no one else. But he mostly just rotates the ball around the perimeter in those situations.

KP hitting one or two more passes into the lane per game would open up this offense a bit more.

And that is in addition to passing out of the post which he also needs to work on. He really needs to study Jabaar for that.

Nice analysis, Hezi. It's exactly what I saw happen vs the Clippers, KP came out trying to play hero ball but when the ball got moving in the second half, and they weren't trying to force feed him we looked like the team we've been seeing and they took off.

I was laughing when Clyde, in his old age haze and not being able to see what's happening complain about KP taking 7 three's (he was doing exactly what you said in the post) and it was funny to see he didn't see the adjustment Jeff made.

Which brings me to what our Clyde said upstairs....KP's next evolution has to be in his passing, because right now it kinda sucks. Teams are taking away that easy, early option we have of just giving KP the ball and letting him shoot over his defender, I'm shocked at how fast this kid is getting doubles coming his way...even Carmelo wasn't getting that type of treatment....real crazy, but this team has showed they can get it going without him, but yeah, if this kid can get his passing game on..... ...and he showed he can by making good, unselfish passes in the second half...seemed like he forgot about his numbers for a second and focused on the prize.

I agree but it's a little more difficult to do that when a team like the Raptors packs the paint. They weren't leaving many driving lane options for anybody and were forcing the Knicks to beat them from the outside. For some reason, the Knicks still tried forcing it inside. When a team does that, it really leaves you with no other options but to pass to the outside knock down outside shots. Kanter is not a threat so they don't have to worry about him out there. Jack is capable but rarely shoots from deep. So when Jack is not taking and making outside shots, it's difficult to have any lanes to the basket for Hardaway or Lee because Raps will have the interior sealed off. That's why I said force KP to the outside that way it gives the Knicks another kick out option and now you force the Raptors to defend and cover more ground if and when they do send a double team on Kanter.

We actually had success with this a couple times in Toronto, but for whatever reason we just refused to stick to it. It would work on one play, but the next few sequences was back to KP on the block. Made no sense

There are always wrinkles. Kanter improving his post passing would help too. Kanter draws doubles when he catches the ball in the post.

KP on the wing hitting Kanter in the paint means somebody is usually open, if not a three point shooter left open by a defender who drops down to double Kanter, then a cutter who does come down the lane after Kanter is fed in the post.

We've seen that happen already and Kanter has made the right play sometimes and hit the incoming man which works even when they are packing the paint.

I know some people got on Jeff about Sessions, and as a Jeff apologist I wondered wtf was going on too, it wasn't what I expected him to do that and thought oh no, but yup, there was a valid reason.

To kill time...https://nypost.com/2017/11/21/frank-ntilikina-has-explanation-for-worst-performance-as-knick/

Knicks rookie Frank Ntilikina’s fourth-quarter benching was more the Frenchman’s call than the coach’s.

Feeling flu-like symptoms, Ntilikina had his worst game as a Knick, committing four turnovers with zero points and one assist in 11 minutes and sitting for the fourth quarter.

Jeff Hornacek said Ntilikina told him he wasn’t helping the team, prompting the Knicks coach to bench him and allow veteran Ramon Sessions to play the fourth period.

“Frank’s under the weather,’’ Hornacek said after the Knicks’ 107-85 victory Monday. “He’s been fighting it two, three days now. he just didn’t have it tonight. He was fine with it. He actually said, ‘I’m not helping the team now.’ Frank’s a smart player. He realized he didn’t have enough energy. He sacrificed. He could’ve gone back in there and still played but it gave Ramon a chance.”

Ntilikina, who didn’t deny that version of events, said he got sick in Toronto and is on medication.

“I tried all I had, but I felt sick,’’ he said. “I felt bad and couldn’t help the team. I was losing the ball and not playing the right way. But I have to get through it and learn to play when I’m sick. Next time I will do better.”

Ron Baker, who hasn’t dressed since the third game, still isn’t 100 percent recovered from a shoulder injury, Hornacek said. On Sunday, rookie Damyean Dotson played for Westchester in the G League game versus Lakeland, scoring 23 points, but Baker was held out. Baker also had a major ankle sprain that was given as an excuse prior to him not dressing for games after his surprisingly strong rookie year as an undrafted free agent.

“Ron’s almost there with the shoulder,’’ Hornacek said. “He practiced [Sunday]. I asked him how it was with contact, he said he tried to avoid real hard picks. He’s getting close to full contact.’’

Yes, the Clipps had a very similar defensive scheme but we did a much better job of adjusting to it. Raps are a much better offensive team though so we better make sure our offense is capable to score because there is no way our defense will be able to hold them to under 90 points like we did to the Clippers.

Yup, exactly. That's why I want the offense to run through Kanter because I really want to see how the Raps will defend it. Maybe play McDermott a little more also. He's excellent as a cutter, plus he's much bigger than Courtney Lee and could possibly defend Derozan a little better. Derozan has no problem abusing Lee and shooting over him so that's another adjustment we need to be looking to make.

The case could be made that Kanter's extraordinary FG% down low means he should just shoot it, but the good teams mix up their offense to keep defenses guessing.

There has not been a low post scorer like Kanter here in a very long time and him getting double teamed in the block happens almost everytime. I think it is just a matter of time before that gets exploited more fully.

These guys need to continue getting acclimated to each other, but I can see how Kanter + KP can become a lethal Inside/Out offensive attack no other team has nor is fully equipped to defend.

You know whom Kanter should find tape of ?

Anthony Mason. Perfect player to emulate. Money mid-range shooter who could back anyone down and score or pass out of that post position. Those who saw Mase play know he had legit passing skills.

I'd encourage all of us fans to give these kinds of things more time. It is not prudent to fully evaluate our newest players until they've been given time to gel with each other with proper coaching guidance.

Anyway, I think we're just scratching the surface of our Inside/Outside game and having Doug is definitely a moving part of that equation.

Yeah for sure. Kanter is a really nice passer, nothing flashy but he has excellent court awareness and knows when to make the right kick out or when to dump it to the guy cutting. I'm all about giving these guys time to develop better cohesion, no doubt about that. I was just talking strictly about coaching strategies and how we should look to approach next game.

Frank
THJr
McDermott
KP
Kanter

Spread the floor with KP, McDermott, THJr.

Put Frank and Kanter in the P&R.

Run McDermott off screens.
Other wrinkle - run KP off screens.

Honestly, I'd have THJr, KP and McDermott running off screens all game long.

I'd bet that's our starting line-up by mid-season if not sooner

And please rebound the basketball. Don't be letting a scrub like Fred VanVleet get offensive rebounds while 3 Knicks are in the paint

I hope so. And I really like what Lee brings, but he can sub in at the 2/3. Jack at the 1. KOQ/Willie at the 5, LFT/Beasley at the 4/3

Have we even seen this lineup play together yet? Prob for about 5 min tops.

Funny how before the season I would have cringed about the defense of Timmy, Dougie, and Enes together, but they’re been at least average. All 25 or younger too.
