Re: TJ McConnell
I think he's a good player for us but over paying to keep some of the non essential players can come back to hurt us.

How good is TJ if he can shoot 40% from.3?
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

Re: TJ McConnell
As others have mentioned, anyone that lived through the post 2001 Iverson era knows how harmful locking your cap space with role players can be.
I think this depends on what happens this summer.
If you can't lock anyone good down, and have to go with the "overpaying vets for one year" strategy again, then you NEED to keep your 2019 capsheet clean.
If you sign some max guy to a long term deal, you're kissing cap space good bye anyway, so its better to lock in TJ for a decent chunk of his prime rather than try your luck developing another guy.
Regardless, there's no reason to give him 4 guaranteed years unless he's giving you a huge discount. Which, heck, knowing TJ he might be into that for all I know.

Re: TJ McConnell
SUCCESS AND FLEXIBILITY MODEL
- Difference makers on long-term deals
- Veterans on 1 year deals
- Developing players on rookie contracts
T.J. doesn't fit the model unless he's willing to sign a 1 year extension in the summer of 2019 or a 3 year deal worth a total $10m ($3.3m per year). T.J. will seek something far better for himself than those two scenarios. Let him walk and get his contract.

Yep. Emotional attachment to rotational guys causing overpayments is a killer.
Once we’re a top 5 team, veteran bench players will take pay-cuts to sign with us.
As Sixerscan mentioned, once you’re already capped out, something reasonable, two year deal, could possibly be worked out.

At 1 three attempted per 36 minutes the % means very little. I hope he starts take them more often, he still passes up a ton of open looks from there.

Re: TJ McConnell
Brown really liking what he’s been seeing from McConnell at start of season.
Feels there’s reason to believe in McConnell’s steadily improving 3-point shot based on some mechanical adjustments.
I believe. BB developed Cov, he can develop TJ too.

Covington was a sniper coming out of Tennessee State.

Of course. I'm talking about overall development not the outside shooting development.Kobblehead wrote:Covington was a sniper coming out of Tennessee State.

I hear what you are saying, but I"m thinking if the Sixers can re-sign TJ at a decent amount, an amount that he's still easily tradeable, then I don't see the problem. Even if the Sixers need to make room for a max FA, they can still get out of TJ's contract by trading him (like Boston did with Bradley and Crowder). As long as you don't overpay him to the point his contract is more than he's worth. At this point he's solidly the fifth best player on the team behind Embiid, Simmons, Roco and possibly Fultz. And I do think he's a difference maker...maybe not on the level of Embiid and Simmons, but he's not going to get a contract in Embiid/Simmons' range. When Philly had a hot January last season, he was a key player. To me he's a key player now. It is quite possible that TJ will take a below market contract. Might as well explore if he would.

There are no advanced metrics or plus/minus or on-off court stats that suggest T.J. is a player worth keeping longterm.

Because that's the only deciding factor that should be taking into consideration when building a team.

Re: TJ McConnell
With Simmons out against Orlando, we'll get to see how valuable TJ is or isn't.
I suppose when Fultz gets healthy and if he plays anything close to what he is projected to, then maybe that makes TJ less valuable. We'll see.

Yes, but there is no reason to let him go just because he will start costing more money. If he is still a good value then he is a good value.
I’m not going to over pay for TJ, but I’m willing to pay market value for him on a 4 year deal.

That's my stance even though I really like TJ. I feel like he'd be happy to stick around without costing us a lot.

Define “market value”. I wouldn’t pay TJ a Dellavedova contract, that’s insanity.

I don’t know what market value is. I’m just guessing that 4 years 20 million would be about right.
