Why you should be thankful for DeAndre

It’s Thanksgiving. Here’s why Clippers fans should be thankful for DJ.

There are plenty of reasons why a Clippers fan might be resentful towards DeAndre Jordan right now. He’s been catching a lot of heat lately, some deserved and some overblown. He’s also been one of the scapegoats for the 9-gm loosing streak. During the bad times, it’s important we not lose sight of what DeAndre has done for this team and the organization as a whole. Especially because his days as a Clipper might be coming to an end very soon.

For giving us his best years
I’m sure a lot of you feel like another team might be able to utilize DeAndre better than we have. Maybe that there’s some untapped potential we haven’t taken advantage of. But the main reason DJ has gotten to where he is now is because of Doc Rivers. Doc challenged him to be the best player he could be, and helped him realize his purpose as a player. (...)

For being loyal
It seems like every year there are talks of DJ being on the trade block. But this year it feels different. t’s early on in the season, and the rumors are because of actual struggles the team is having. It feels real, like something might actually happen soon.
Will he get flipped for a couple of younger players or some picks? It’s possible. But lets take a journey to the past.

DeAndre has stuck with this team for 10 years. Everyone he has played with, he’s seen come or go, or come and go. I’m sure there’s been plenty of times he’s wanted to leave the Clippers. A couple of those times we’ve seen played out...

Not atall. DeAndre has been overpaid in 6 out of the 10 years of his Clipper career.

DeAndre was a nonfactor his first 2 years, was adequate in his third, and then the equally pathetic [at that time] Warriors made him a huge [$10M/per] offer as a RFA and DJ signed it: We were forced to match. Loyalty has nothing to do with it.

Then he freeloaded on that contract until Doc showed up and BSed him into believing he was one of our Big Three. Which he became, esp at that salary. Then came Mark Cuban and the ridiculous Emoji War that doubled [$20M] DJ's salary for the same production.

So DJ's back in his career place, overpaid. Hey, I love the big lug. He's not a bad person. But he's a free rider. Rim protection [heavily declining block numbers], easy rebounds, cheap baskets. He cleans up behind the elephants and gets paid reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally well to do it.

I just don't know how well Deandre Jordan fits in the 21st century NBA at any price: If you can't shoot, your man can just ignore you and camp out near the rim [and block Blake, whoever's playing SF, and even Austin]. If he can shoot---and they all can now, even oldtimer Pau Gasol--that means you have to stray out to guard him and you can't camp out and protect the rim anymore.


It's a structural problem. The game has changed. In another century, DJ is Wes Unseld. 10 ppg, 14 rpg. Hall of Famer.
