Tobias Harris gets "honorable mention" for league MVP

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Tue Nov 28, 2017 4:44 pm

I knew if we kept winning, someone from Detroit would eventually work their way into the honorable mention or maybe even 6-10 section. Lets be honest, even if we win the East its not really possible for anyone on our team to win we're pretty balanced and statistically no one is going to have absurd numbers like Harden or LeBron. That said, I was somewhat surprised to see Tobias get the praise in the honorable mention section this week over Drummond. http://www.nba.com/mvp-ladder#/

1 Harden
2 Kyrie
3 Lebron
4 Curry
5 Embiid
6-10: Greek Freak, Porzingas, DeRozan, Westbrook, Lilliard
Honorable Mention: Cousins, Tobias Harris, Jokic, Towns, Wall

Drummond, if anyone, deserves a mention but Tobias has definitely been absolutely fantastic. Perhaps if we keep this up he might haven outside shot of making the all star team or replacing someone injured.

Dre is putting up 16 pts and 17 rebounds a game this month. He looks possessed...made Horford look like a back up yesterday.

I still don't think Harris is consistent enough to be an all-star. I think they mentioned he'd only cracked 20 points in 7 games last night.

If Tobias keeps this up, he should get considered for the All-Star game.

Tobias hasn't really had a bad game this year. He's really been efficient night in and night out. His "problem" is that he's just not that assertive. There are a lot of nights he only takes 10 or 11 shots. The lead scoring guys are usually getting 17-20 attempts up. Harden is putting up 11 3's up.

The real MVP(s) are Jennings and Erson.

Just straight theft.

I still remember that trade happening. My mind was blown by what SVG was able to do in the front office. To think Jackson for Augustine, Bradley for a second round pick lol. I think Stanley Johnson might get traded if he doesn't pick it up by the end of the year. I still think he can be great, just needs the ball in his hands more and get told to make plays. I think a blowout against Phoenix would be great for SJ to get some action with the ball in his hands. He scored 86 pts in the summer in a game. I mean where are those points coming from? lol I'm pretty sure he just needs more touches. If Drummond can fix his FT in one offseason like that then anything is possible.

Harris has been playing great this season, but for me, the team MVP has been Drummond. He's taken the leap we all hoped he would when we signed him to that big contract. His game last night against Boston proved he can be the best center in the league, and he's making a case for All-NBA First Team with his performance thus far.

When you have players like LeBron, Curry, Durant, Harden, the Greek Freak, Westbrook, and Leonard, it's impossible to make the case that any Piston is an MVP-candidate. At this rate though, I think Drummond and Harris are both worthy of an All-Star nomination this season. If we maintain our win percentage throughout January, there's no reason why we shouldn't have two All-Star players, especially given how balanced our roster is.

Product of our team environment more than a indictment on his ability though.

IMO AB is the team MVP. Tolliver co-signed on that.

As impressive as it is to see a new Dre, a new RJ, improved SJ & Tobias...where was this mentality last season?

We straight up folded like a house of cards in more games than I care to remember but now? We don't quit!

The team mindset has changed dramatically and that's not a coincidence

he's been balling out of control this year, just glad he's not waiting to do it in a contract year and he has another year on his contract.

With that declining contract Tobias is one of the best bargains in the league this year and next.

Can he keep up the 3 point shooting? I mean he is shooting all time great levels. Better than the best on the number of shots he is taking. Heres hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.

The reality is that Detroit absolutely NEEDS scoring still. With AB, Stanley and Drummond all playing as hard they have been playing, Defense works. Tobias not hitting all these 3s, where do the points come from to win big games?

Still plenty of big PFs that hurt Tobias though, so he needs to keep scoring at a high clip because he and Reggie give up plenty of points against opposing PGs and PFs.

" I mean he is shooting all time great levels." For him? Yeah. 30 guys shot over 40% from 3 last year and he's currently only 9th in percentage.

I would consider him more in top 3 this year as far as 3pt shooting. He's 9th percentage wise but those guys ahead of him don't have as many as attempts to take it seriously. Top 3 3pt shooters right now should be Ingles, Harris and Porter.

Clay is taking 8 a game and hitting at a 46% clip. CJ McCullum is 6 at 49%.

Nice to see. He's been great. As for Dre, he's been playing better, but can't go crazy and crown him over the Celtics performance. For those with short memories, he went for 28 & 22 @ Boston in January, too! He just owns that team. Good matchup for him, bad matchup for Boston. But the holes are still there (though they're getting a bit smaller).

Cool but meaningless. Obviously if you’re considered the 15th best player in the league you’re not a true MVP candidate. The list should read more like favorite, runner up, third, fourth, and honorable mention. I don’t have any data on how many players historically each year get even one MVP vote or more, but I can’t imagine that it typically goes beyond 5 players. And certainly not 15.

EDIT: Just looked it up, and lo and behold I was right on the money and didn't even know it. Voters pick five players only, ranking each from 1st place to 5th. Then obviously the total number of points after tallying all votes determines who finishes 1-5.
