How good is Tyler Colvin?

Post#1 » by treyZz » Sat May 12, 2007 2:38 am

Just how good is Tyler Colvin?

I was kind of pissed when the Cubs took him in the first round last year, but have been pleasantly suprised with his success so far.

As of 5/11:

Tyler Colvin: .316 / 2 hr / 25rbi / 6sb

Compared to Maybin who is in the same league and is a big time prospect:

Cameron Maybin: .305 / 4 hr / 17rbi / 10sb

I know Colvin is almost 2 years older than Maybin - I'm just trying to compare his stats to someone who is highly rated.

How good do you guys think Colvin can be in the majors?

He's not really that good, I wouldn't have him in my top 100 prospects. To say the least I was very suprised that the Cubs picked him that early, especially when Travis Snider and Kyle Drabek were on the board.

So far this season he has 119 ABs, 7 SBs, .354 OBP, .504 SLG, 5/29 BB/K ratio, and a .385 BABIP.

And he is a about a year old for his league like you said.

That BABIP means he's more than likely going to get a good amount worse this season because he's getting quite lucky. Also Colvin's BB/K ratio is nothing to be proud of at all.

I really don't see him ever making a top 100 list, but thats just my opinion mostly because he's always going to be old for his level, and he would pretty much have to get at least a .900 OPS in his level which I don't see. And I don't really think he has a high ceiling. I think he could be an average corner outfielder with gap power and a good glove but thats really about it.

*Cue every Cubs poster to come in here and tell me I'm a Cards homer for not likiing a Cubs prospect*

Tyler Colvin freaking sucks.

Damn what a terrible draft pick.

He has taken 14 walks all year & since moving up to AA he has 34 K's compared to only 4 walks. And a sub .300 obp.

What! The Cubs failing to draft a good positional player? I'm shocked.

I just have a feeling Vitters is going to dissapoint too.

First they have to sign Vitters. (which I think they will, but still anything could happen)

Suprisingley Colvin was doing pretty good this until he got promoted to AA, then not so good, off the top of my head I believe his OPS is AA is about .650.

If they don't sign Vitters...I mean, I was already mad over the pick since they could've taken Wieters and stopped this endless carousel of mediocre catchers at some point.

Guess the Cubs have faith in Soto.

He seems like the sort of player that could hit 20-25 HR in a season if he remained healthy and received consistent playing time.
