Ducks fans -
Image
Talk about a perfect storm - an injured Beavers squad whose coach quit mid-season and whose interim coach had a kid that week (lol @ game planning) marches into Autzen to take on a healthy, highly motivated Ducks team. I thought for a minute Taggart was going to go for 100. instead, he pulls out the raincoats in the ultimate "you did not beat us. we took our ball and went home last year. but that team of quitters does not exist anymore. deal with it" troll. I literally had a friend text me "will making the potential recruits stay out in the cold for hours watching this bloodbath be a bad thing?" as a fan, just beautiful.

thought he'd take an offensive coordinator position in the NFL instead of retreating back to college. he had two chances at the NFL. it is what it is. reminds me a bit of Eric Mussleman, who the Beavers should totally hire. although Clownzano, really being "more of a Tinkle guy", would disagree.

Oden2 wrote:Supposedly its Beau Baldwin to the Beavs. As an Oregon fan I think this is a FANTASTIC hire but I'm an outsider.

and as a Ducks fan, I think that's a terrible hire. Riley 3.0!

in all seriousness, Baldwin is great offensive coach. some Ducks fans threw his name around last season as a darkhorse candidate for the Oregon job. as a Nevada fan, I was bummed to hear he was the runner up to Jay Norvell.

Oden2 wrote:Chip officially goes to ucla. Very shocking, I didn't think ucla had the muster to land that kind of coach.

UCLA has some high level booster trying to do to UCLA what Phil Knight did to Oregon - literally to the point they hired the same firm to copy Oregon's facilities.

Norm2953 wrote:It looks like Chip is going to hire a number of coaches with Oregon connections. Chip likely is his
own OC but Mark Helfrich is going to be the QB's coach. Cal looks to lose many of their assistants
if Beau Baldwin gets the OSU job for couple of their coaches likely will be going to UCLA to be with
Chip. Chip's coaching staff might look a lot like the Duck's staff from 2012 and it will be interesting
to see how much they can win with greater access to talent in Southern California.

will he?

Allioti is retired.
Coach Cam is done and still has ties to Oregon.
Frost would have to turn down the Nebraska and Florida jobs to get a demotion in order to work under Chip again.
at this point in his career, Greatwood seems like the loyal type that would likely stay under Wilcox versus jumping ship after one season.
Pellum is trash.
Radcliffe still has a job coaching non-football sports at Oregon.

so who does that leave?

Azzinaro is a lock.
Helfrich could return, but that would involve relocating his family, giving up potentially millions in Nike money, and accepting the fact that he is not cut out to be a head coach.
Neal might return for a DC gig. but if you are Kelly, is that someone you really target?
Osborne might want to return to coaching...?

Oden2 wrote:In a way ucla is pretty low pressure as he can probably get away with 7 and 8 win seasons there.

UCLA is losing the Rosen one and expectations in Chips first year are 7-8 wins. good luck with that.

honestly, given the choice between Chip coming back or retaining Leavitt, I'd choose Leavitt. as others have pointed out, Oregon's offense isn't exclusive to Oregon anymore. this means we're back to having the team with the best players and the coaching staff that can best adapt their schemes to the talent they have being what decides wins and losses. that's what's so great about the current coaching staff and the massive uptick in recruiting. a ten year old could have beat the Beavers today calling nothing but running plays for Freeman because the talent gap on the offensive and defensive lines was so big. and the best part is, recruiting is sustainable whereas always coming up with an innovative offense is not so easy.

in a sport with 128? teams, his offense can still work. this isn't the pros where DCs have figured out all of Chip's nuances, or where Kaepernick can go from a Super Bowl level quarterback to unemployed in two seasons because 29 DCs were able to figure out how to stop the pistol formation. I figure Chip's UCLA tenure will go down one of two ways:

very unlikely - Chip is completely flexible, innovates the game for a second time, and continues his early 2010s success

most likely - Chip lives or dies by the talent he recruits. just look at a grad transfer like Vernon Adams being the difference between Oregon potentially being a playoff team and being a team that fires their head coach a year after playing for a championship. lucky for UCLA fans, Sam Bradford has no college eligibility left. :)

still, it all starts with building a staff. his UCLA contract was cheap as far as market value goes. so if UCLA is serious about winning, it's on them to pony up for a top tier supporting staff like Oregon did with Taggart. the concerning part for UCLA fans is that Chip's tenure as a psuedo-GM ended horribly. he really doesn't have an extensive network of assistant coaches at the college level, and he has been out of the college game for half a decade. by no means a lock to fail - just a harder position to be in.

best of luck to him - and by that I mean I hope he's a big enough thorn in USC's side that there isn't a dominant team in the south when Herbert peaks. :)

OSU had some really bad playcalling in the civil war. I couldn't believe when they went for it own their own 20, not even a high school coach makes that kind of call...

The game was so far over at that point and OSU couldn't stop anything. At best a punt might have burned a minute or two off of the clock. I respect them trying something else when what they were doing wasn't working, even if that turned out to be just as bad.

lot's of will-he/won't-h rumors about Taggart going to FSU now that Fisher is gone.

The Ducks have had a press conference at 2pm today scheduled for several days so that should be a good indicator on what Taggart intends to do. Won't be good news for the Ducks it it's cancelled

Press happened but plenty of questions loom even though he showed up to the presser. Seems like he's either gonna bolt if FSU calls or use it as leverage for a better contract with Oregon. It's hard to say which one it is but it'll be an interesting next couple of days..

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/florida-state-seminoles/chopping-block/os-sp-acc-fsu-oregon-willie-taggart-20171201-story.html

Taggart – a top Florida State coaching target – said he has not had any contact from the Seminoles while trying to not provide further comment on coaching rumors.

“Why wouldn’t I be? I’m the football coach,” Taggart said lightheartedly Friday if he would return as Oregon coach following a practice after Fisher accepted the Texas A&M job. “You guys are asking me like you’re trying to get me out of here or something.”

After replying “no” when asked if FSU had reached out to him, Taggart quickly asked reporters “so can we move on now?”

So it would seem that all the information coming out is secondhand source opinions about this interview so I thought I'd post the original interview here:

According to some on Ducks Authority This guy is reliable but obviously take it with a grain of salt since alas its still the internet where "sources" are everywhere:

So what to make of all this? There is a lot of 'agenting' going on in this instance and the agent for Taggart is the same as the agent for many college coaches; Jimmy Sexton. He is very, very good at finding ways to create leverage and he is very, very good at getting his coaches to use the coach speak about other jobs. In fact, what Taggart said today was almost verbatim what Fisher said yesterday "I am the coach here and we are busting our tails to get our team ready for it's next game. I don't talk about rumors."

Not only do I contact my own sources; I read everything I can find. So here is what I think. Taggart never wanted to leave Oregon, but to get a big raise following a 7-5 season, he needed leverage; that Fisher was leaving Florida State; it created the only opening which could have created enough leverage to up the ante from Oregon.

The issue is that Sexton may have overplayed his hand at Florida State. This was the third year in a row where he used interest from another program to attempt to get more and more from Florida State. They want a great young coach, but are not likely to play too well with Sexton for very long. That will help Oregon out as the opening at Florida State is very attractive and there are sure to be some very interested parties.

As for the 'what if he leaves' questions. I have heard some stuff on that - as in Oregon brass has been preparing for the potential that Taggart leaves and, like any good athletic director, Rob Mullens has a short list of candidates in mind should a search become necessary.

The good news is, nothing I have heard today makes me change the belief that Taggart is not leaving. If ever there was a good time for both Florida and Florida State to open, it was after Taggart's first season in Eugene.

While I'm hoping willie stays, after how seeing how his agent operates i wouldnt be that bothered if he left. Yeah on one hand the class would probably go to trash and we'd have to work hard to keep the coaches together. On the other hand i could see this game being played every other year with Willie trying to use every offer he gets to gain leverage for a pay raise.

Willie has done a good job at Oregon but he still has a losing record overall. I bet cristobal could keep the program on a similar trajectory or even leavitt who has plenty of hc experience

Oregon lost Tre'Shaun Harrison, a top recruit today and the rumble is he de-committed because Taggart wouldn't give him a straight answer.

whether Taggart stays or goes, he's doing damage to the Duck program right now, and his evasive answers to direct questions are making things worse

Who do Duck fans want as HC if Taggert leaves and takes most of his assistants with him. Would it
be possible for Oregon to speak with Taggert about leaving Oregon's coach of choice on the current
staff behind to be the head coach?

has there ever been a more hyped 7-5, 8th in the Pac12 with a losing conference record than Taggart?

I was skeptical when Oregon hired Taggart as his win-loss record has historically under-performed the talent level of his teams. even this year Oregon was projected to be 8-4 on a talent adjusted roster (which I agree is a flawed metric as talent level undervalues positions like QB, but that's another discussion). he won me over by doing two things - 1) bringing in a very impressive assistant coaching staff, and 2) bringing energy into a lifeless program that needed it. but from a play calling standpoint, his play calling was questionable. I remember games where I could call exactly what play was going to happen based on the formation with 90%+ accuracy. and if a drunk like me can do that, imagine what a competent defensive coordinator could do. and so Taggart's coaching career at Oregon would depend entirely on the level of talent he can continually both bring into Oregon and develop.

knowing that, my mind is blown when people online are saying Oregon should blow all their Nike money trying to retain Taggart. first, if he's leaving because FSU is his dream job, money doesn't matter. second, if Oregon is going to have a top ten coaching salary in addition to paying on the buyouts of Helfrich and his assistants, Oregon damn well better have a top ten coach. Taggart is probably a top ten recruiter, but he's not a top ten coach.

which is why I'm so confused as to why Florida State is so interested in Taggart. it's a B or C level hire at best for a top ten program. if your program can "reportedly" spend $7 million a season, which people are saying is the "new norm" because Texas A&M hired Neil Olshey as their athletic director, and you have a top ten program, which FSU is, why would you go after Taggart instead of Franklin, Chryst, Malzahn, Dantonio, Gundy, Petersen, Petrino, Fuente, Leach, Campbell, etc. because he grew up in Florida? how well did that work out for Oregon with Helfrich?

so either Taggart is using this to leverage a new contract or he legitimately wants the FSU job. it's dick of him to put the players and recruits in this situation, but it's a business and NCAAF is all about exploiting student athletes. good for him.

but bad for Oregon. looking like the Ducks are going to the Vegas Bowl, which is an early bowl before the early signing period, while dealing with a potential coach turnover. honestly, I imagine they just promote Leavitt or Cristobol and try to keep as much of the coaching staff and commits as possible. that's a solid game plan, honestly. but then I view Taggart more as an elite salesman than anything else. losing Leavitt, Cristobol, Salave'a, etc. is probably harder to replace than just Taggart. good position to be in. imagine trying to promote from within last year when your options are Hoke, Pellum, etc.

but then if Oregon is willing to spend, there's some good options out there. I just hope if they look outside of the current staff for a head coach, they retain as many of the assistants as possible. that's probably a requirement given the whole buyout situation and Mullen not going full Olshey when it comes to being fiscally responsible.

Yeah its pretty ridiculous. I can understand some of the hype, recruiting is a very big part of the equation after all. That being said I've seen a lot of top 5 classes that everyone has pegged as destined for greatness wind up looking mediocre at best if the coach didn't know his X's and O's.

My synopsis after one season is that Willie is a good but not great playcaller. I do think we could be a 10 win team at some point under his leadership but there's zero guarantee he can take a power 5 team to the CFP. Bad calls can get you past average teams but there's a pretty big difference between the level of perfection it takes to get to 13-0 or 12-1 and 10-2. Ultimately I think instead of overpaying to keep him I'd rather just spend that money keeping the staff together. Honestly this late in the game our best option might be to hire a HC from within. I say that knowing how horribly that went the last time we did it with Helfrich but at least this time around we have a guy in Leavitt who pretty much built USF from the ground up. Leavitt is by no means a 20 year type of coach (he's 60 after all) but unless we can find a guy who is clearly better I'm not sure what better other options we have now that all the good names have been hired.

Cristobal I'm sort of 50/50 on whether to look at him for HC. His record at FIU wasn't all that phenomenal but he's known to be able to recruit well. I'd love if we could keep him around regardless even if it takes giving him a decent sized pay bump.

I didn't really think much of the Jonathan Smith hire for OSU but man that guy had an amazing intro press conference. Dude exhudes confidence and knows the right things to say. Looks like he's a Beaver fan to the core too.

Taggart to FSU

the coach who demanded accountability from his players shows no accountability to Oregon

now, the question is how quickly can Oregon get a HC in place and a staff together; and then, how much of their recruiting class they can salvage

I've been told that the Ducks are working hard to retain several of the assistant coaches, especially Leavitt, Salave'a, Heyward, Cristobol and Arroyo. It's possible either Leavitt or Cristobol will be named head coach although Kevin Sumlin and Mike Norvell have been mentioned several times

He has seemed very unprofessional for the last week and I'm glad we are rid of a coach who likely would have played these games every year. 47-50 all time record, I wasn't sold on him from the very beginning. When I saw his recruiting ability I grew to like him more but he's still a very unproven coach when it comes to making a school a playoff cotender in a power 5 conference. I wish him well but don't expect me to root for his success..

On another note what is fsu thinking? They're a big time school and they make a big time commitment (6 years) to a very mediocre coach. Honestly I was a bit scared he'd take our extension offer in the sense that we'd be paying him for 5 more years and potentially have him here 6 years and coaches tend to wear out their welcome quicker than that these days unless they're really good.. Now we avoid that risk and as an added bonus his buyout will pay 1 year of Helf's 2 years left on his contract. This leads me to believe Oregon is in better financial shape in this next search as we are pretty close to having a blank slate in money owed to coaches plus we have a big Nike re-upping deal kicking in (going from 44 to 88 mil)
