This Teams Issues 2017-2018

Post#1 » by DET_Athletics » Thu Dec 7, 2017 3:14 pm

I'm going to start off by saying that I am proud how SVG has this team playing. We have been in every game this year, outside of the Cleveland game. But there are issues I see that are personal and not coaching.

1.) We need a big that can shot block and score outside of Drummond. Our offense drops off too much with our second unit. Now the stats will show that they score a lot and possibly outscore the starting unit, but if you look at the games you can see when Dre comes out we lose our anchor. Moreland is a good stop gap but he doesn't command the opposing defense to do anything but box him out, and he's a below average shot blocker.

2.)We need a defensive minded point guard to be either our starter or back up. I like ish, I like Reggie. I don't like them together as our starter and back up. Offensively they have different styles and put up points and have gotten people involved. Defensively they both have huge deficits. Reggie can't stay in front of anyone, not even spit up and shoot SF's and Ish is far too undersized to stop bigger sized guards.

3.) Too much money is tied up in people who aren't playing and shouldn't be in the rotation for the rest of the year. We all know that Boban and Leuer are getting paid a lot and aren't contributing much right now. A trade should happen to try and fill one of those needs, but I don't see one that works out cap wise and blowing away future assets like picks and salary, which we will need to re-sign Avery, Tobias, and Stanley.

But what do you guys think are issues I missed and possible solutions to them?

All sound pretty good. Drives me nuts seeing PG's blow by Reggie. Last night for instance we needed a stop in the worse way and Bledsoe in the easiest way I've ever seen blew by Reggie and got into the paint got a shot and then tipped in his own miss. How about after you get ridiculously blown by, you at least make an effort to get back into the play and stop r man from taking a SECOND shot. Lol.
Maybe we'll get lucky and Boban and Leuer will start playing up to their contracts. Galloway too. Cause nobody is taking them off our hands.

Itā€™s insane that weā€™ve got 30 mil plus tied into 3 players that donā€™t/canā€™t play.. as much as svg has ripped people off in trades, heā€™s cancelled out those good moves by making horrible signings. Canā€™t overlook these signings when we have no cap to absorb salary in potential future trades.

I agree, which make me think we have to give up a pick to right the ship with the current roster, but at the same time I look to this draft and I see some people who could fill that big spot perfectly, like a Robert Williams. He could play next to both Dre and Henry and cover up their weaknesses. The only problem is he's going to be a low lottery pick and we are looking like a playoff team.

We need a small forward, rebound better, and play better defense.

When SJ & Moreland were in the game together the offense was completely stagnant.

It's hard to compete with 2 non-factors on offense and that stretch of the 3rd quarter really doomed the team last night.

I have more hope in Stanley Johnson moving forward tho than Moreland, Stanley is playing some really good defense this year. I think with more time he is going to figure it all out more.

SVG needs to do a better job staggering the rotation so that we don't havce offensively inept line ups on the floor

Doesn't take a genius to know that any line up with Moreland & SJ ain't gonna get it done.

As much as some of us vakue defense you still need to score the ball and playing 3 on 5 is gonna get you killed.

Needs: guys that can create off the bounce

When shot gets tight you need creators that can make it happen.

It's a long season - we've showed promise. Keep the faith

Stanley is a total non factor on offense. He consistently bricks open jumpers so there's no much use in guarding him.

We need a 5th starter. Tolly is a great vet to have around and is solid as a rotation player. Bullock is just plain bad. We have no 5th starter the moment.

If the Pistons could dump Leuer and or Boban while getting a competent SF, I'd be down to burn a 1st and or Henry.

We need a Ariza or Wilson Chandler type to just come at a decent price and not wreck any chemistry. Want more of a vet who's serviceable on both sides and around that age to fill in the starting unit.

Since SanAntonio wanted to acquire SJ last year, I wish the NBA was like soccer and the Pistons could loan the Spurs SJ to fix him and learn under Khawi.

SJ takes too many shots and hit too few of them. Opponents are inviting him to shoot and defending the other 4 players. Drummond isn't a great offensive player and will never be. Whenever one of the other 3 starters are not doing great on offense, we're screwed.

AB is being inneficient on offense. We've been losing. VoilĆ”. We don't have enough talent on offense, to have SJ getting minutes. Period.

Without a SF and playing 4 on 5 on offense, we're not going anywhere.

In 7 days most FA signs will be allowed to be traded.

Everyone complaining about the offense and Kennard is playing 15 minutes a night. You want to fix your offense, that kid needs to play more. The way I see it, when Stanley is playing, opposing defenses play off him because they know he is terrible on offense and that leads to much easier help defense on the guys that actually can score on the Pistons. If Kennard is in there defenses simply cannot do that because he will splash 3s in their eye on dribble kick outs. SVG is stuck between a rock and hard place with Kennard/Johnson. One has defensive issues (especially dribble penetration to the basket) and the other is one of the worst offensive players in the league. I would like to see SVG start Kennard and then base his second half minutes based on his performance and what the team needs in relation to the match ups that night. It cannot hurt....Stanley Johnson is a train wreck shooting the basketball right now.

I will add that I totally agree with the person who mentioned that SVG is doing a really bad job of not mixing his starters in with his bench players in the second half of games. You cannot expect a lineup of Smith, Kennard, Tolliver, Galloway and Moreland to maintain leads or stay with teams....won't happen.

He's cut it down to a 9 man rotation at the moment with Galloway not playing.

SVG was really pissed off at the bench in the post game interview last night. I could easily see him benching Kennard again.

The whole bench was terribleā€¦ Not sure how he could single out Luke.

If anything Luke should get more minutes to help the offense be less stagnant.

As a huge fan of Kennard I hope you are right but SVG is a defensive coach and Luke really struggled on defense in Milwaukee. I just would love to see what a starting lineup of Reggie, Avery, Luke, Tobias, and Andre could do.
