Connelly Drafts

Post#1 » by NuggetsWY » Thu Dec 7, 2017 9:10 pm

2013 Traded Iguodala for Randy Foye
Signed JJ Hickson & Nate Robinson
Traded Koufos for Darrell Arthu & Lauvergne
Nuggets drafted & traded away Gobert for Erick Green & cash but I'll cut some slack because Connelly was named the GM about a week before the draft and the Nuggets had a new first-time head coach named Shaw.

Since then, what has Connelly done?

2014 - Drafted & traded McDermott plus Anthony Randolph & a future 2nd for Nurkic & Harris
------- in the second round; drafted Jokic & Marble --- Looking great

2015 - Drafted Mudiay
------- Radicevic in the second round --- not looking so good

2016 - Drafted Murray & Hernangomez & Beasley
------- in the second round; Cornelie & Hamilton --- looking great

2017 - Traded Mitchell pick for Lyles & Lydon
------- in the second round; Cancar & Morris --- Hard to say so far

I'd say 2017 not looking so good considering guys we passed on are lighting us up already

Looks like he does well every other year so that's a plus...Gets a solid B/B+

I give him a C-/D for trades and FA

Tell me a team that hits EVERY year...even GWS drafted Anthony Randolph, Epke Udoh (sp ?) and some others along that line....

Agree some of his trades and FA are questionable, but the I for one like what I'm seeing of Lyles (hate what I'm seeing in Mitchell, though)

I was actually a little please with what I saw at drafts, when I sat down and looked at them. Drafting is always a crap shoot and it's easy to remember the misses and the great hits like Jokic, but in basically 4 years he has drafted:
Jokic
Harris - draft day trade
Murray
Hernangomez
Beasley
+Lyles - draft day trade

I'd heard enough people say "great drafter" and I just wanted to see.

Yeah, not sure I want to look at his trades/signings.

Connelly is well above average at drafting, especially when you look into the details more.
Randolph and the 2nd was a salary dump and roster clearing move for a guy that they had wanted gone well before the trade deadline. The fact that he got Nurkic and Harris to move down and dump Randolph while only giving up a 2nd was a great trade.

Radicevic was actually a rising star in Europe before he destroyed his hip a few months after the draft.

Cornelie looks to finally be coming around in Europe this year

Morris and Lydon have both been playing well in the Dleague.

Cancar seems to be doing pretty well in Europe as well.

The problem with Connelly is all the other areas of player management, where he is below average to terrible,

Radicevic sure looked great to me back when he was drafted. I was still hopeful for another year, that he could recover. Who knows? Maybe he'll make it still, but if he doesn't even show up for Summer League next year, that's probably the end of what little hope is left.

Just consider our young talent right now; if Cornelie & Cancar come over next year and Craig & Morris make the big league. Just the young players, you know, the ones Malone hates to play, would look like this:

Jokic
Cornelie-Lyles-Lydon
Hernangomez-Cancar-Craig
Harris-Beasley
Murray-Morris

Even if they don't all become superstars, that's starting to look like a versatile squad.

TC needs to hire a GM in charge of Player Acquistions and step away from that aspect of the business

Cant argue with his drafting except for this year... if they hadnt flushed the first rounder in the plumlee deal perhaps they could have moved up by combining the picks too...

I'm pretty sure Cancar was an AK pick, he's tied to Misko.

It was rumored that Cancar was drafted as a favor to his agent.....who also happens to represent Nikola Jokic.

Heard that rumor but I don't mind. A late 2nd is OK to gamble with (or curry favor). Cancar seems like a possible SF for the future. We shall see. Not impressed with his stats from this year, but Euro-ball is a different game, played in a different manner. Not playing young players is even more common, unless they are already great. But that's just my opinion.

Nice article and some good stuff, but why did they have to dismantle a 57 wind team and become trash in order to rebuild?

That 57 win team couldn't even get out of the 1st round of the playoffs.....enough said !!

Sorry, gotta disagree. They dump a coach & a GM and become a 36 win team then they progress to 30 wins before beginning to turn it around.

I'll give Connelly credit for what he's done, as long as he takes credit (at least partial credit) for the precipitous fall the Nuggets had during his rebuild. I'll give him even more credit when the team wins that coveted 1st round series and/or 57+ wins for a season.

Mark me down as disgusted with the unnecessary 5 years and still skeptical regarding our current prospects. I believe we have most of the right players, but I'm not convinced we have all the right pieces and you know that I don't believe we have the right coach.

Disagree all you want but fact is from 2004-2013 George Karl got the Nuggets out of the 1st round ONCE (2009). And Masai Ujiri wanted to go back to TOR where he started, more of a professional courtesy than a "dumping" as I recall. Then the Mole left after one year, we gave up assets for him and he bailed, the team was already in turmoil before TC got here.

Most everyone will agree Shaw was a HUGE mistake but at the time he was looked upon as a hot asst coach (even though he never was hired, red flag ignored) who failed to live up to expectations, he's the one who ran this into the ground. And not sure, but wasn't Shaw hired before TC ??? I'll admit I was high on Shaw at the time, didn't find out what a douche he was until after season one, the players knew long before the fans did.

Barring SA, every team has its ups and downs, gotta be dealt with. Sad to say, WY, I never pegged you for a guy who has to have a scapegoat.

All in all, TC's record had been about a 75% success IMO. Sure he botched his first draft but he was only on the job for like 9 days, he wasn't prepared for that draft. But one thing I have noticed about his drafts is that he doesn't usually force an issue, that seems like what he did with the Mitchell draft. The rest of them he let come to him like the Murray pick, Juancho and (luckily) MPJ falling to him. Also, have to say he's been above average in the 2nd round, hitting on Jokic, Morris, Cancar (looks good so far) and Vanderbilt seems to have huge upside as well.

well let's be honest, the team wasn't going to get 57 with randy foye instead of iguodala, regardless of whether we kept Karl.

Here is a legendary 2014 draft.

When Denver should draft #11 pick most of ESPN hosts expected Denver will take Garry Harris. Lately is announced that Denver trade #11 McDermott for rights of #16 and #19 pick. When Harrys is finally drafted as #19 (see around 2:15:00) all ESPN guys say it is the steal of the draft and that Denver is the clear winner of Chicago trade because Garry Harris should be original #11 pick anyway, so #16 Nurkic is a bonus. When it comes to Denver famous #41 pick (see around 4:03:00) ESPN put the only commercial break over pick announcement, ESPN commentators have no single information about Joker nor video, so they say just one sentence that Nuggets take second international center after Nurkic, and that is all.

Jokic is a spectacular steal, but looking at textual projections before #40 pick, Nikola is actually projected as #50 pick. But we are really so lucky to take Harris at #19 and two years later Murray at #7, and this year MPJ at #14, because of it is far beyond all previous mock drafts projections. Unlike in Jokic case which is the product of good scouting, with Harris, Murray, and Porter we are just lucky they stayed available that late against all odds.
