Bench Issues?

Post#1 » by NuggetsWY » Thu Dec 14, 2017 12:27 pm

Some bloggers are talking about Nuggets bench issues. Why? Sure, the bench is struggling right now but with Millsap out and then Jokic out plus Chandler missing a few; of course there are bench issues. Let's consider our roster.

Starters
Jokic
Millsap
Chandler
Harris
Murray

Bench
Plumlee
Faried-Lyles (Arthur-Hernangomez-Lydon)
Barton-Jefferson
Beasley
Mudiay

That isn't a bad roster in truth. Out of balance for sure, but when you pull 2 or 3 players off the bench unit because of injuries, it's not so deep. Perhaps having 3 centers and 3 true SFs might have made some sense. But other than Lydon at PF, where he never sees time, there are no rookies and Beasley & Hernangomez are the only second year players. This team should be ready to play as is.

As Hastings keeps pointing out during the broadcasts, the biggest problem the Nuggets have on offense with starters and bench is people standing still or as I prefer to call it, "Spectating". Defense is a whole different issue, but our team has a poor defensive scheme in general IMO.

I think a big part of the ineffectiveness of the second unit is on is Mudiay. He has been bad on this road trip and doesn't do a great job of getting the ball popping on offense. I'm curious if the FO is investigating backup PG options, someone who can play 15-20 minutes, keep the offense moving, and contain dribble penetration.

Lack of continuity doesn't help, injuries have messed with the rotation big-time. On the flips side, it has given guys like Beasley and Lyles to show some of their potential.

I think the bench issues stem from lack of shooting.

Mudiay is a drive and dish type facilitator and seems to get stuck playing with players that either clog the paint or play an iso heavy game. It seems to me (and I admittedly don't watch anywhere as much Nuggets b-ball as you guys so feel free to correct me) that Mudiay plays really well with Harris who can shoot and space the floor yet the two don't share the court that much.

Totally agree - last year the bench included Hernangomez, Murray, Barton. Barton can drive, spot-up, or go ISO, so can Murray. Hernangomez is a shooter. Lyles seems to be pretty good at shooting too. The problem is, injuries and adjustments have left the bench with fewer shooters - but more than that, there's just not enough motion, so Mudiay has to create motion to be effective.
