Manny Machado: Best Overall MLB SS

Post#341 » by Ranma » Wed Dec 13, 2017 12:38 pm

If we could trade for Machado and sign him to a long-term extension, I'd have little qualms in meeting the asking price to acquire him and Britton from the Orioles. Machado would be our starting SS and Seager would either move to 3B or 2B. I'd probably stick Corey at 2B to accommodate Turner for now. Machado is the better defender and more potent bat given his power and ability to hit for average.

Seager may be a future stud, but his misguided stubbornness in managing his health and fatigue is worrisome. Along with the other Dodger bats coming up short with their unnecessarily over-aggressive approach in the World Series choke job, I'd welcome Manny Machado with open arms and make whatever room is necessary for him in providing little, if any, deference to the likes of Seager, Turner, and Bellinger on the roster in order to make that happen.

With regards to the Orioles' asking price for Machado (and Britton), I'd readily include Grandal and Verdugo as the starting base of an offer. Stewart, Stripling, Sheffield, Alvarez, and even Buehler would be in the mix for their aims at 2 young, controllable arms but it would be dependent on whether we can secure Machado to a long-term deal.

I still want to have bullets to offer in a pursuit of Chris Archer. Maybe we can substitute Toles for Verdugo depending on what pitchers we'd be including in the deal.

Furthermore, I'm not buying the BS that Friedman and Roberts are saying about liking the team as a 104-game winner and being hungry after a World Series loss. There was no excuse to lose Morrow to the Cubs given what he signed for and how he pitched for us in the postseason, especially with Roberts' panicked over-reliance on the bullpen. We got significantly worse by losing out on his talent and bulldog mentality.

The Dodgers may still be poised to compete for the postseason, but our status as contenders has taken a hit with the misses we've had this winter so far. They may be encouraged by the progress of Yimi Garcia but Morrow was as reliable an option as we've ever had out of the bullpen, health concerns be damned.

Brittany Ghiroli, MLB.com (12/12/17)
The Orioles are looking for two young, controllable arms in addition to a left-handed hitter and a veteran catcher. While trading Machado may help them fill some of their holes, other teams may be reluctant to part with top prospects for a player who will hit free agency next year. Duquette said no club the O's have talked to asked about a potential 72-hour window to negotiate an extension for Machado.

If the Orioles do indeed keep the All-Star, they still may have an opening at third base. Machado wants to move back to shortstop -- the position at which he was drafted -- though no final decision has been made.

Moving Manny? Orioles Listening to Offers

I'm OK with resigning Yu... I'm just surprised we are...
He clearly has good stuff and power, and he seems to like it here... But you don't blow it in the biggest game of your career and get a new contract... It just doesn't happen very often...
That said, on paper, there aren't a whole lot of Starters available who are better. And we know this FO loves stuff that's on paper.

Hoping the Twins outbid us and take him off of our hands. Keep in mind your post should read that he blew the TWO biggest games of his career.

This front office needs to put more emphasis on the mental make up of our pitchers. The choking and melting down in October isn’t acceptable. It is not a way of life that we just have to deal with and try to get around. Not everybody is dealing with this level of choking from their ace and #2 to get to a WS.

Re-sign him and yeah, we’ll cruise to another division title.
I’m not as optimistic about our October success...and losing Morrow added to that.

we are cutting cost, that is the #1 objective, it looks like. even the dodgers' official site had an article about trading at least one of McCarthy/Gonzo/Kazmir for salary dump only to get under 197 mil in payroll.

I think we should start a conversation with the Twins for McCarthy deal. eat half of Gonzo's money and send him down to San Diego for a proper retirement tour, and we are stuck with Kazmir. no way anyone wants his ass unless we eat most of his money, which at that point it defeats the purpose of trading these guys in the first place.

it wasn't the case of Yu choking in the biggest games in his career, but it was a case of Yu tipping pitches that Astros were able to decipher, but our dense coaching staff didn't, and was not able to correct or hide the tipping.

You’ve also said Koufax tipped pitches and was still putting up zeroes. So which one is it?

More importantly, how easy is it gonna be to solve his tipping problem? We thought we had it under control and then whoops, it reared its ugly head at the worst possibke timez

Worth 5 years and $20+ million???
Is Honey even gonna be here to coach him up? Don’t we have some geeky stat nerd coming to be pitching coach?

Nothnx on Yu.

Yu darvish should definitely be resigned. too many people are putting the blame on him and it's wrong. he didn't hang a slider in Game 2 and blow the game when it was won. he didn't blow the game in game 5 twice with big leads. the team lost as a team. we shouldn't have been in that Game 7. and Roberts should've announced he was staring Yu and started Kershaw. it was clear Kershaw had great stuff for Game 7. so Bring him back. he's a great player. and you reward what he's done til this point. nobody brings ups the fact that we wouldn't be in the World Series without Yu. no one talks about what he did in Game 3 against Arizona and Chicago. those are two clutch games on the road that we had to have and he was a beast. you would think the Astros would know something about him facing him in their same division.

As for this off season After Stanton I would like to go to a team that wants to dump money and acquire a Front line Pitcher like Zach Grienke who has stuff and would go right back to number two behind Kershaw where those two like being teammates. I also think that would win a world series for us. Greinke pitches great here. and Dodgers fans would be screaming for that.

I also want to sign a vet like CC sabathia not for the season but the postseason look what he did against Cleveland and Houston. the guy is a gamer we could've used some of that in Game 7 and 5. he's a workhorse. not flashy he just knows how to get guys out in Baseball. Kershaw needs to be around a guy like that. 1 year deal for CC minimum.

And the Trade look if we can get Manny Machado GET HIM. we need the bat to put with Bellinger and Seager. I'm all for moving Seager to second base and having Machado at Shorstop. whatever we'll make it work.

even a trade for Yoenis Cespedes would be great. having that middle of the order power and pop would help us a lot.

and Gonzo I want to see how Adrian Gonzalez looks with a whole off season no playing for team mexico in World Baseball Classic and maybe he can get back to power and we can put Bellinger in the out field.

and then sign a guy like Wade Davis. we need that set up man for Jensen.

I'm really excited to see How Walker Buehler looks and if he can be an end of the rotation guy.

we didnt break the bank for Zack in the first place, because investing 30+ million per year for more than half a dozen years to a 30 something pitcher is just simply an unwise move. i expect the same logic to prevail here as well.

CC is probably going to resign with the Yanks for a year or two, but if he is available, he should be considered for a short term, but I don't think he is looking to come home at discount. I don't see adding another lefty to the rotation as of right now.

I am convinced the FO is looking to go under that 197 million threshold, but for Manny Machado, we can blow it all up. Let's send Stewart and Alvarez to Baltimore for Manny. even include Stripling for that third young starting arm. we were saving our precious cap money for 2019 FA anyway, grabbing Manny now would pretty much complete this team's lineup.

1 R CF Taylor
2 L 2B Seager
3 R 3B Turner
4 L 1B Bellinger
5 R SS Manny
6 R RF Puig
7 L LF Joc
8 R C Barnes

with
R C Farmer
L OF Toles
R Util ****
R 2B/3B Logan
L PH Gonzo

assuming that we don't find a partner to dump Gonzo ( and we won't) and move throwing arm injured Corey to the short side of the middle infield to first base throw, this team will be more potent than any team in baseball offensively, including the Ass-Trolls.
ehhhhh f it.

He blew game 3 AND game 7 of the World Series.

That’s half of what Houston needed to complete the job.
He has so much blame for the WS loss, it’s not funny.
