Re: The Ben Simmons Megathread
we all want him to be a complete player. but it's his rookie season. not a smart idea to change his shooting mid-season.

He should have changed his shooting hand last year. He had an entire year to work on it.

it's up to ben. no trainer or staff in the world is going to persuade him to change shooting form/shooting hand unless ben, himself, experiences struggle and failure. most times you gotta fail first before that lightbulb comes on and makes you take a proactive approach. obviously, ben is a supremely confident personality, so when something isn't working and he knows he needs to improve on aspects of his game, only then will he make the necessary changes.

Re: The Ben Simmons Megathread
Triple double tonight or not? Some coverage and discussions out there had him with one, 19p 12 reb 11 asst but checked the nba box score and they have 19, 12, 9.
Not the only time I have noticed it. Is there more then one source, do figures get adjusted after games? Does Lavar have a Russian hacker contact?

I don't know what the obsession is over triple doubles, it's especially annoying when players go out of their way to try and get one. Not implying Ben does this either.Jams60 wrote:Triple double tonight or not? For Australian basketball fans, it’s a big deal. Had this been a triple double, the number of triple doubles by Australian basketball players in the NBA moves from 3 to 4.
But apart from that, what about the bookmakers. I’m sure there are sports bettor markets around the world where whether Simmons got a triple double matters. You only have to see what Indian bookmakers have done to cricket matches to be worried. Statisticians would be cheap, easy targets.
Finally, the NBA lives on stats. The way the game is currently played is because of the analysis done by statisticians. Players livelihoods are based on their stat output. You would hope that the stats are accurate.
I agree though for Ben Simmons and the Sixers it is no big deal.
I read that he took and missed the game winning basket. If that is correct, to me that is the big deal. I cant remember seeing him do that in any college or NBA game. That is what we need, that aggressiveness and self belief when it matters.

LOL I am pretty sure most Australians couldn't care less whether he gets a triple double or not... I don't. Most wouldn't even know what a "triple double" is... that's why they send Entertainment reporters living in LA to cover Aussie players whenever they are in California and ask them really lame questions.
As far as betting goes, well it's not legal to bet on basketball in the US in just about every state anyway (Other than Vegas I believe) and even then I think it is only on wins and margins/spreads. I don't think they have the same types of betting we do in Australia where you can bet on Player A scoring a certain amount of points in a certain quarter etc etc (Which is often where illegal spot fixing happens).... so they probably don't care whether statistics are accurate or not.

It was a game tying basket. And I just hate when players go out of their way to get triple doubles. What Westbrook did last year really sort of cheapened the triple double.Jams60 wrote:Sixers2125 wrote:I don't know what the obsession is over triple doubles, it's especially annoying when players go out of their way to try and get one. Is his triple double being given back to him tomorrow? He clearly had 10 assists?

The NBA is against Simmons, so they will do whatever they can to remove some of his triple doubles, it is a corrupted league.

He can write his own legacy by winning us games ...

During post-game interviews, Ben acknowledged that he's going to have to start taking and making jumpshots to get to the elite level.

this is why I am not worried about him. He seems like a really smart guy who gets it.
Dude has been raised to be an NBA player ffs...now whether or not he ever becomes great at it, is another thing but I am certain he knows what he has to add to his game. He was feeling it out and teams finally adjusted, now its up to him.

Players have been doing that for years, there are old examples way worse than what Westbrook did (google Ricky Davis e.g.).
And the triple double was always sort of dumb, just an arbitrary achievement that's not particularly rare or impressive. It shows you can pass and rebound, but it's definitely way better to post say a non-triple double 28/12/7 line than a 11/10/11 one.
In any case, if we're going to say it's a great accomplishment to post a certain arbitrary stat line regardless of other factors, then we shouldn't be surprised when players do cheap things to achieve that arbitrary line. Stupid ways of measuring things will always get people to do stupid things to achieve them.

Re: The Ben Simmons Megathread
Gs getting rebounds doesn't impress me. Usually it just means they're sagging back and taking easy boards away from their own frontcourt players instead of sprinting down the court, presenting outlet targets, and putting pressure on the transition defense.
Everything about Russell Westbrook's game is shallow and unimpressive. Even his scoring output is bloated and phony. He hasn't once had a season with a 56% true shooting yet he's chucking up upwards of 30 shots a night.

I felt that Ben's lower body had a slight angle with the basket during his FT's last night.

I don't get it, that shot looks pretty smooth and fluid why not shoot it in the game?
