The Stan Van Gundy Contract Thread
Believe it or not, time flies. Stan is now in the middle of the 4th year of his 5 year deal. With most coaches/GMs in his role, contract extension talks should begin February-the off season. If there is no extension by the start of next season, the SVG era is most likely over. Any thoughts on if we’re going to hear news on an extension? Does Stan want to return or does he gun for another job?

Re: The Stan Van Gundy Contract Thread
Like I mentioned in the trade thread, much of SVGs legacy in Detroit will be determined with how he handles managing assets at the trade deadline and in the offseason season.
He can't afford to just let everything play out and hope for the best.
They need to make a decision on AB and not loose him for nothing.
Also if they can't develop SJ, I'd like to see them get something for him.
There should also be some thought put into moving Leuer & Boban for more useful pieces or shorter commitments.

Re: The Stan Van Gundy Contract Thread
SVG has made some great midseason trades and then screwed the pooch with free agent signings. overall though, the team is dramatically more competitive than before he got here. I don't think we'll have much luck replacing him with a better GM or coach.

^ Realistically, what other job would Stan "gun for?" He's got total control of basketball operations here, which was an outlier when he was hired and has become even rarer for a head coach since. I can't see SVG receiving an opportunity he'd prefer to his current "Basketball Czar" status.
The only question that matters is, what does Tom Gores think of the job SVG has done (or, what will he think come this offseason)? And he'll answer that question loud and clear with his checkbook — an extension means he's happy, no extension means he's not.

He needs to go. He's a cartoon. He talks about tough love and being demanding and all this crap - he's just a prick. And for such a demanding guy, he doesn't seem to hold himself to the damn demands given he's a fatass. Pop and Riley can be pricks, they got rings. SVG is just a poser.

Re: The Stan Van Gundy Contract Thread
His biggest mistake was banking on Andre to be a franchise player for us. Andre doesn't have that killer instinct and hasn't shown to be a leader he's a big child. He lost Monroe and KCP for nothing and instead used big money on mostly marginal to borderline rotation players. I understand he isn't able to land a big name FA to come to Detroit but at the same time he cost us with a lack of cap flexibility. For what he traded to get Reggie, Morris, Bradley, Harris he's been fine in all those trades its just hasn't worked out well enough to justify resigning him for another 3 or4 years, especially as both a coach and GM. Part of me wonders if he would ever consider just being GM and focusing on that while his brother would step in and coach but I doubt they would want to work together like that.

Re: The Stan Van Gundy Contract Thread
He didn't lose Monroe and KCP for nothing.
He flipped the cap space that Monroe leaving created into some second round picks, valuable players on short and cheap contracts. He flipped some of those guys and picks into Tobias Harris.
He let KCP walk after he replaced him with a vastly superior player in Avery Bradley. People are still hung up on how SVG renounced KCP under this belief that we could've gotten something for him in a trade after getting Bradley. People forget that SVG tried to trade KCP for Evan Fournier and got rejected. That's where KCP's value was when he was still on his rookie contract. Imagine how much worse the market would be for him after he signed a big deal.
He's worked some great magic in trades. Clearly has overpaid and made some mistakes in free agency. His draft record is shaky. He has been a much better at running the team than Dumars was over his last decade of service.

Re: The Stan Van Gundy Contract Thread
i might not be remembering this right but didn't SVG say these five years were his "last" when he first got here? obviously plans change but i was under the impression he came here to overhaul the roster and compete for a championship - within five years.

Yes because any demanding guy who is not a hypocrite must be skinny. SVG is honest about what goes on, seems to get a lot out of most players, and has a knack for trading. He hasn't batted 100 but not many people do. If we let go of SVG it might as well be for a complete tank job. And I think Gores would sell the team before that happened.

I believe SVG did say that he wanted to put down roots in Detroit and make this his last stop... I think ideally he wanted to be here long term though not just a five and done.

Re: The Stan Van Gundy Contract Thread
Draft Stanley Johnson - trade for Mook Morris and Tobias Harris in same off-season/season
Draft Henry Ellenson - sign Jon Leuer to a four year 40M deal in the same off-season, sign Anthony Tolliver next off-season
Draft Luke Kennard - Sign Langston Galloway to 3 yr 21M contract, offer KCP 80M over five years to stay in same off-season
'Nuff said.
Signed back-up players for too much money on too many years so can't trade them, and don't play draftees enough so they have no value either.

We're 4th in the East. SVG's made some pretty meh decisions but ****, do people remember how absolutely awful it was to watch us in the year preceding SVG?

Stan said Detroit was absolutely his last stop in the NBA. He was open to more years but he said he promised his wife this was it (if my memory serves me correct).

Re: The Stan Van Gundy Contract Thread
Why some people lie saying SVG lost Monroe... Guys just check the REALITY, when Gores signed SVG Monroe was decided to sign the QO and leave the team... He couldn't trade Monroe that summer, and the value of him during the season being a non restricted free agent was damn low, so basically be honest and don't lie or atleast check your sources.

How is trading nothing for Morris and the corpse of Brandon Jennings and Ersan for Tobias bad? Because of Stanley Johnson? LOL. Stanley's problems are primarily his doing. He clearly hasn't done enough work in the off season to improve his shooting and skill set.
Funny how Leuer's struggles this year make people forget just how good he was last year. Is he overpaid? Absolutely. Would I like to see Henry get more minutes? Absolutely. There are certain games where SVG should find minutes for Henry against weaker and less versatile 4's but he needs to get stronger and better on defense before he can be a regular rotation player.
Kennard is averaging more minutes per game than Galloway. Is Galloway overpaid? Yeah but not by much.
You people bitching about the minutes rookies get and at the same time complain when we don't win need to decide which of those two things is more important. If you want wins then the vets are going to play more than the rooks. If the rooks play more the team is going to win less. SVG has had two late lottery picks and one post lottery pick. None of the players that have been picked have had the overwhelming physical tools and/or skill set to demand major minutes right out of the gate.

Leur fell off a cliff after 20 games last year.
I’m not saying it’s all doom and gloom, but when we lose it’s not because our rookies are playing.

Re: The Stan Van Gundy Contract Thread
SVG has constructed a team dependent on streaky shooting with limited potential for growth.
After games like this Dallas game I'm starting to loose faith.

The worst move the Pistons made in the offseason was not replacing him as coach. His player & rotation management is beyond bad. Detrimental. I can't imagine an extension.

Re: The Stan Van Gundy Contract Thread
I think he's done a good job for the most part, his draft picks haven't hit, but late lottery picks don't always hit either. The talent level on this team has improved based on his transactions quite a bit. I think the problem is with SVG the coach, as Shaq says he's the master of panic, over time I think he's the type of coach that loses effectiveness, probably will need a new coach, but I think with the FO portion he's done a good job, considering what he had when he came here.
