Wells Fargo And Fifth Third Bancorp Join Businesses In Praising GOP Tax Reform

HENRY RODGERS

Political Reporter

6:39 PM 12/20/2017

Following the footsteps of other major corporations, Wells Fargo and Fifth Third BankCorp praised the Republican tax reform plan Wednesday hours after the bill passed through congress.

Fifth Third Bancorp and Wells Fargo announced they wold be raising the minimum wage for their workers to $15 an hour, giving credit to the Tax Reform plan that will lower corporate tax rates.

Wells Fargo, the largest money-lender in the U.S. also said they would be donating $400 million to community and nonprofit organizations in 2018, following the announcements by the aerospace company and defense contractor Boeing, who announced they would be donating $300 million for charitable projects, employee training and education, and facilities improvements for Boeing locations.

Fifth Third, which is the fifteenth largest U.S. bank by asset size, said the tax cut allowed the company to re-evaluate their employees salaries. Along with the raise, Fifth Third said they will distribute a one-time bonus of $1,000 to more than 13,500 employees.

The employee bonuses will be sent out over the holidays if President Donald Trump signs the bill into law before Christmas.

Comcast announces $1,000 bonuses after passage of tax bill
BY ALI BRELAND - 12/20/17 06:25 PM EST

Comcast on Wednesday announced that it will give $1,000 to over 100,000 of its employees as a result of the passage of tax-cut legislation in Congress, as well as the FCC's repeal of net neutrality.

"Based on the passage of tax reform and the FCC's action on broadband, Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO of Comcast NBCUniversal, announced that the Company would award special $1,000 bonuses to more than one hundred thousand eligible frontline and non-executive employees," the company said in a statement.

Roberts also announced that Comcast would invest $50 billion over the next five years in infrastructure towards its “broadband plant and capacity, and our television, film and theme park offerings.”

Comcast says that it expects to bring on thousands of new employees as a result of the investments. The firm says it will offer further details in its Jan. 24 earnings report……..

Popper--looks like you like the tax cuts. Thought you were a debt/deficit hawk? You do know this is going to blow up the deficit.

you think Donald muthafunkin Trump, businessman extraordinaire is not going to balance the budget? perhaps turn a profit(surplus)??

DACA rhetoric has gotten to you too much. you're dreamin'! Choppin' block is next, kids. I expect complete entitlement reform before the 2018 elections. along with a sustainable goverment spending bill. Get ready for it now so there will be no mental breakdowns later. ease yourselves into it.

I'm holding out hope that Trump not only curtails spending to match the tax cuts but also balances the bugdet by 2023(or earlier).

and what would be amazing is a 28th amendment where the budget must be balanced every single year with times of out right war(not conflict) being times when any administration spending can exceed the annual tax intake.

I'd also like to see sales tax increase and income tax to continue to decrease.
like i said, its a full rebuild.

that article is a crock.

1. dont have kids until you can afford them(and maybe not at all if you cant afford them?)
2. save money for retirement.
3. buy stuff you can afford/live within your means (while saving for retirement)
4. live healthier life styles. healthy food is less expensive and exercise is free.
5. accept death as part of life

its quite simple actually. everyone does that and income taxes could drop to as low 10% or less for everyone. and the social services we provide could be only for the mentally ill. severely sick or injured. or kids without parents.

everyone would value hard work. respect each other more. respect each others' property more. respect the law more. less need for cops. less need for medical coverage. less need for prisons. less need for lawyers. which could massively drive down costs.

basically live within your means. stop trying to be so damn cool with stuff you cant afford just to get laid or feed your ego. It really is that simple.
like i said, its a full rebuild.

You are right. I am. But I think these tax cuts will pay for themselves. IMO this is an enormous victory for US business, their competitive standing, and for the people they employ.

I like that they lowered the corporate income tax rate. But cutting the individual mandate was evil personified. What is wrong with these people?

n 2012, Kansas lawmakers, led by Gov. Sam Brownback, a Republican, enacted a tax cut that eliminated state income taxes entirely for pass-through entities — such as sole proprietorships and limited liability partnerships — which are taxed at the owner’s individual income tax rate. The law also lowered individual income tax rates, cutting the top rate to 4.9 percent from 6.4 percent.
The tax package reduced state revenue by nearly $700 million a year, a drop of about 8 percent, from 2013 through 2016, according to the Kansas Legislative Research Department, forcing officials to shorten school calendars, delay highway repairs and reduce aid to the poor. Research suggests the package did not stimulate the economy, certainly not enough to pay for the tax cut. This year, legislators passed a bill to largely rescind the law, saying it had not worked as intended.

I see this talking point all over the place among my liberal friends. It's true, but also irrelevant. The expiring tax cuts is a gimmick to make the numbers work in order for the tax bill to pass with just 51 Senate votes. Everybody knows that, 8 years from now, neither political party will allow the individual tax cuts on middle class workers to expire. At that point, there will be a political will to extend the tax cuts with 60 votes.

You can complain that the tax bill is not "paid for" because of this gimmick, but arguing that the tax cuts for the middle class are only temporary is just a scare tactic. They're going to stay.

Interesting. What's your opinion on the massive tax cuts failing in Kansas? Why do you believe it can work on a macro level even though it fails on a micro level?

I'm actually surprised this isn't getting that much attention. The Republicans have essentially defunded Obamacare and Democrats are mostly making the tired old arguments about tax cuts for the rich. (Middle class taxpayers are seeing a much larger percentage reduction in their tax rates than rich taxpayers are.)

Let's do some basic math about tax revenue here. Say WF has 1,000 in taxable income pre tax-law change. With a 35% tax rate, that's $350 federal tax. Now, figure in that they're spending $100 more in salaries and charitable contributions. Their taxable income goes to $900, and they're taxed at 21%, so WF's tax is $189 - a decrease of $161 - which is 46%. Put a T between Wells Fargo's initials if you want to balance the budget - much less decrease the national debt.
