Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
Just going on record, again, that Monk should be getting playing time ... even in games where he's stinking it up. I would have been fine with him getting reduced minutes later in the year if he didn't seem to be earning them. But the way he was used this year ... tons of minutes when guys were hurt early, then nothing. Well that's how you make guys into bad draft picks.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Our player development sucks monkey balls except for that brief stint with Mark Price where he taught MKG how to shoot and Kemba how to play PnR.

Yeah, unless a guy just isn't physically ready to play which usually applies more to young bigs than wing players, then he should be out there at least a few minutes every game. He's definitely not getting better just sitting there watching from the bench and since we already know theres limited practice time during the season how the hell else is it gonna happen?

His biggest issue right now is actually that he just isn't physically ready to play NBA defense. He trys and moves well, but guys can pretty much go right through him. Hes really skinny and he didn't get a proper offseason, so it isn't surprising. I think his defense will get to an acceptable level, even if is always below average, once he gets a couple offseasons to add strength.
His lack of strength hurts him on offense too. Hes super quick and explosive in space, but when he gets bodied up at all it really slows him down and bothers him.
He really does need minutes, though. If nothing else he should easily become a really good scorer in this league and he has good intangibles and fantastic athleticism, so I still think his ceiling his higher than guys like Lou Williams and Jamal Crawford.
If we are still way below .500 after the all-star break and he still isn't getting minutes then MJ should just go ahead and fire the staff in season, or at least throw down a mandate for Monk to get some minutes.

Malik Monk (Charlotte Hornets, SG)
Grade: D
Struggling at both ends, Malik Monk has fallen out of the Charlotte Hornets rotation.
There haven't been many positives to take away through two months. He has made 1.2 threes per game, a tribute to his shot-making and range. He's been effective catching and shooting at a 41.3 percent clip.
And he's demonstrated some restraint offensively, recognizing his role has changed. Monk is taking care of the ball (10.0 turnover percentage), and he's shown some underrated passing skills.
But he's shooting 35.1 percent inside the arc and 33.7 percent from three. His pull-up game (24.5 percent) hasn't worked, and he's only taken 17 free-throw attempts all season.
Only six players in the NBA sport a lower real plus-minus. He ranks No. 95 in defensive plus-minus among NBA shooting guards.
Monk has had some promising stretches shooting off step-backs, screens and spot-ups. But he hasn't been consistent enough to compensate for the offensive inefficiency and unreliable defense.

He needs to completely stop taking pull-ups. He's beyond terrible at them. Stick to catch & shoot. He's shown a little bit of playmaking flash and as noted above his turnover percentage is very low. A lot of his turnover percentage being so low though is that he chooses to end most possessions with terribly bricked long 2's instead of trying to get us a good shot.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
All I want for Christmas is for Monk to catch fire on his shot for the rest of the season. Defense be damned. We’ll learn that next season.

i'm from arkansas and I remember watching him play in HS. he's super duper skinny. extremely explosive but once you put someone on him that can put a body on him his handle gets really shaky.
i think his lack of handle accentuates his small frame. doesn't have a great work ethic. never has had to he's always been the best athlete out there.

Man, i get off work at 2. Otherwise i'd prob go to that.
I definitely think this is the right move now that we have MCW/Stone and Graham/Lamb healthy. Get these guys some minutes and confidence please.
Someone teach Bacon how to play for the love of God. He is beyond painful to watch on offense. Still not sure what we saw in this guy, he looks like a huge bust

Great, still pretending we are a playoff team that can't find minutes for Monk when we got studs like MCW taking us to the promised land... What a joke. Hopefully this is a short term thing taking advantage of our little layoff and Monk gets called back up once we start playing games again.

I watched the game.
There was some unbelievably questionable shot selection by Monk.
