Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at the top of mock draft lists by year's end. Especially if he continues his play. Big hurdle though, scouts are still stuck with preferring bigs over guards.

TCU this weekend should be a nice test for Trae Young to open of conference play.

This draft is stacked with bigs though - Steph Curry 2.0 types, not so much.

If he keeps up this performance until the end of the year and shines in conference play, I think he's a lock for top 5. Maybe even top 3 depending on draft order.

The Magic are projected to end up with a top5 pick, if they don't get to draft Doncic they should def heavily consider drafting Trae

Their FO might not though, Weltman and Hammons try to go for length and all that.

That would be ironic if they passed on him because of that given that's exactly what would help Young to ease himself in defensively in the NBA, not to mention the lob targets he would have on the other end with Isaac etc.

Yeah, but when do they give up on Elfrid Payton? I also wonder if another team might decide to blow it up and try not being mediocre (instead be a rebuilding team). Maybe try to trade up for him, like the Grizzlies, or Charlotte (Kemba will be on the final year of his contract and might leave), Suns could probably trade up, the Jazz might not think Rubio isnt the answer now, maybe the Knicks see Ntilikina as a 2 long term and trade up, New Orleans could use anything right now (and Cousins might leave), I don’t think Denver is in love with either of their point guards, Detroit seem to always have issues with Reggie Jackson staying healthy, Hawks could decide to move on from Schroder if they like Young more and if LeBron leaves and Isaiah Thomas leaves the Cavs will need a starting point

Grizzlies and Suns are projected to end up as bottom 5 picks pretty clearly, so not sure if they'd need to trade up at all.

The lotto would shake things but going by 538, of the projected teams up there this are sort of my favourite fits;

ATL; Luka Doncic or Michael Porter Jr.
PHX; Michael Porter Jr. or DeAndre Ayton
MEM; Marvin Bagley III (that one would be great for Bagley
SAC; DeAndre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III or Michael Porter Jr.
ORL; Trae Young
PHI/BOS; if PHI, Miles/Mikal Bridges, if BOS, DeAndre Ayton
CLE; Mikal Bridges/Jaren Jackson Jr/Miles Bridges
DAL; Jaren Jackson Jr/Miles Bridges/Kevin Knox
CHI; Jaren Jackson Jr/Miles Bridges/Kevin Knox
CHA; Collin Sexton (gotta trade Kemba while you can get something)
NY; Collin Sexton/Kevin Knox/Wendell Carter Jr.
LA; Mohamed Bamba/Kevin Knox/Robert Williams/Wendell Carter Jr.
PHI; Robert Williams/Bruce Brown Jr./Dzanan Musa/Wendell Carter Jr.
POR; Dzanan Musa/Robert Williams/Bruce Brown Jr./Troy Brown Jr.

IT gets trickier after the top10 (I have a top10 pretty set as of now, Doncic/MPJ,Bagley,Ayton,Young/Miles,Mikal,JJJ,Knox,Sexton).

Pick 2: Beasley, Thabeet, Turner, Williams, Kidd-Gilchrist, Oladipo, Parker, Russell, Ingram, Ball.

Is there a single player you'd take over Young as a previous pick 2?

I mean that's not really fair, you'd have to think about both pre-draft

I'd say from what I remember, I was higher on Beasley and Parker than I am on Trae, it's close with MKG, Russell, Ingram and Ball, I was lower on everybody else, hated Turner, Oladipo and Williams pre-draft.

I've found myself lower on Young but higher on his draft position due to expected odds of becoming an All-Star.

Historically if you can get a prospect (in this case Trae Young) you assign a 1 in 3 chance of translating to that level (which is on the low side compared to what I read from others) he's still usually worth any pick outside of pick 1.

Unlikely to basically no chance the 6ers get Williams with the Lakers pick.

Edit: just saw it was with the 76ers own pick: still basically no chance at Williams.

man, that Trae Young matchup vs Jevon Carter and that WVU defense is going to be too much fun.

its the ultimate offense vs defense - i don't think its a stretch to say Carter is the best defensive guard in the country. not to mention, you have the skinny, slight, weak, freshman sensation, vs the tough, strong, hard-nosed, senior - just adds to it that Carter looks like he's about 35 with that bald head and beard.

really doesn't get much better from a hype standpoint.

I think Young's bust potential is pretty low:

1. Plays for a major power conference
2. Elite passer
3. Efficient scorer
4. Great shooter
5. Still a Freshman

That looks like a pretty safe pick. The only question is whether his average physical gifts place a cap on how good he can be. The only downside with picking him in the top 5 is he might peak out as a very good, but not great player.

The Trae Young show is the gift that keeps on giving.
