Hield in his second year, shooting incredibly well, and you guys already call him a bust, give me a break.

Re: Trae Young
I think you guys are missing the point on the 3PT% stats in relation to Trae Young.
It shows it's likely his 3 point shooting will translate because it did even with players who didn't reach their ceiling.
Even Lonzo Ball is shooting 38% in his last 72 attempts.

MalonesElbows wrote:He shoots them that far because he needs the separation to get his shot off, given his diminutive size and low release point. If he needs the extra 4 feet in the NBA, will be shooting from 28 feet out, that is far!! and not ideal.
He shoots them from this far as an attempt to increase his volume and speed up the game. No regular guard is able to consistently shoot a high volume of tightly contested 3's off the dribble right at the line. Those who are asked and want to shoot a high volume of 3's off the dribble are looking to pull up in transition, take step-back 3's and shoot from a couple feet behind the line – Curry is the best example of that and nobobdy doubts his shooting ability.
Note: I'm not saying Young is the next Curry in terms of shooting. What I'm saying is that Curry frequently shoots from far behind the line and nobody doubts his shooting – but it is a necessity for Guards with extremely high volume of 3's taken because NBA teams don't give you good looks right at the line this frequently, and then it's better to shoot a less contested 3 from a little further back than to shoot a tightly contested 3 right at the line, even if you could get your shot off because of your high release point and speed.

Most Pull Up 3 Attempts Per Game last season:
Harden 6 @ 33%
Curry 5 @ 36%
ESPN had a story on it.

I know most everyone here will probably be watching C's/Cavs but tonight is a huge game in the state. Wouldn't be surprised if he plays his best game of the season.

Re: Trae Young
Young shoots from 26+ feet because it opens up the offense for him and everybody else. guys have to guard him out there, gives him space to penetrate, setting himself up or allowing him to find teammates in position to score. that's why it doesn't matter much his percentage from out there, just has to be accurate enough that defenders have to respect the shot - which they do.

I told you, they’re terrible without him. They literally can’t play without him.

Had a bad day, bothered by bigger guys on him and the traps, also missing from 3 and still won easy, put up 27-9-10-1 and got to the line at will, and if he hit one 3 of those weird long ones, he finish with his averages basically, sort of insane
His ability to hit floaters is uncanny
I thought his defense was really solid

It also helps that Young plays in an offensive scheme that benefits guards greatly. Lots of space and lots of P&R plays which allows him to create without needing anyone else great around him really. Lon Kruger is doing a terrific job of exposing him to the NBA style of play and it’s paying dividends for OU (and Trae) this year. NPOY favorite by far.

He looks like the most dynamic guard in this class by a mile, his handles, body control, wheels, and quicks are special, also his shooting is good but could be miles better if he corrects his release point, putting it a bit higher, his ability to go from his handle to his pull-up is Curry/Dame-esque, I think he looks really special if he can tweak a couple things and continue evolving physically.
So far he is the most interesting PG prospect I've seen, at the very worst he is 6'2 JJ Barea.
If he gets his finishing fixed to a degree and becomes a good shot-maker, he has the tools to be a Kemba Walker-level player.
Good analysis. When he drives, his timing tends to be a little bit off as far as body control but over time he will get stronger and better at that.
I like the Dame comp better than Steph because of his build and his range. He’s also comparable to Steve Nash if he focuses more on distributing in the pros.
JJ Barea makes sense but I think coaches will be smart enough to use Trae Young as their focal point in an offense much like Lon Kruger has done. Kemba is interesting one that I haven’t heard. I think Trae is a better shooter and Kemba is a bit faster and a better defender and finisher.
I see Trae Young working well in Chicago, Sacramento, Cleveland, or Dallas where they can really space the ball around him with other shooters and P&R players.

Re: Trae Young
I’m really very interested to see how he goes off ball, not that I’ll get the chance to see it this season. With that shooting you don’t necessarily have to make him your primary initiator from day one, which is what I thought would be the case after his first few games.

He played like an 19 year old, which is okay because he’s only 19. There is still a lot he needs to learn in terms of playing and feeling comfortable at a higher level, but the skills and abilities are there. You could see him learning to adjust throughout the game. More talent around him will make him better, but I suppose he learns to go through this now so he knows how to handle it when he gets to the NBA.
Personally thought his defense was pretty bad. He got lucky he was playing college kids at times and luckily his hands were quick enough to avoid some dire mistakes.

Re: Trae Young
To make a pretty obvious point: I think any FO that drafts him is not going to be that worried about his current defensive capabilities. Not saying they wouldn’t look at it, but that’s not why you’re drafting him.

I thought it was interesting to note, looking at his highlights today, how many of his assists came from lobs after he penetrated.

Re: Trae Young
He hits go ahead passes better or as well as Lonzo and nobody freaking talks about it, yesterday he put a masterclass on that but his teammates didnt finish always, could've finished the game with +15 assists
For him to do that with his height, it's unreal, best in the game at it are +6'6 guys like Lonzo, LeBron, or even KLove, in the past JKidd was awesome at it but he is what? 6'5?

I thought he was going to get 20 assists. It looked like in the first half he had a ton (like 9 or 10) but when I looked up the stats I was confused he only had like 5 or 6.

Re: Trae Young
So is everyone on board with Trae for number 1 or are there other contenders for that spot?
