Miami Heat, What happened to them?

Post#1 » by mboysince97 » Sun Jan 7, 2018 8:53 pm

I’m a University student who’d watch them a lot last season & they looked like a terror going into this season.

I’m on an internship so I haven’t been able to catch too much Heat basketball.

In your opinion what happened to them?

Too many average players were overpaid for them, not enough starpower even for the East. Injuries have hit them hard as well (Waiters, Whiteside, McGruder, Winslow), and it's been tough for them to gain traction. Fun team when healthy, but their ceiling is capped by the contracts they gave to middling players.

Honestly wondering if Pat Riley is content with them being a Hawks like team in this Warriors era.

They've won 3 in a row and 8 of 11? Weird timing for this.

What even is this thread?

They've been ravaged by injury this year and they still are tied for the 10th best record in the league.

Worst time to make this thread. They're 4 games above 500, tied for 6th DESPITE being destroyed by injuries all season.

I thought the Bam Adebayo pick was a real reach and I have seen enough to know that I was really wrong about that.

10th best record in the league = not a contender. Not totally off base to think that the 4th highest payroll in the league and trading away two future first-rounders should get you more.

Lol 3rd best record in the league = not a contender.

We all know there are only two contenders. If that is your criteria then there is no real reason to bother watching at this point.

I certainly didn't, which begs the question of why they have the 4th highest payroll in the league and traded away 2 future first rounders to put together such a roster. This is a team that won't make it out of the first round (if they do make the playoffs) barring major injury. It's funny to see people react as though the Heat are some scrappy upstart team when they're in the luxury tax with no avenue to improve from where they currently stand.

The real question is what happened to Waiters. He went from shooting 40% from 3 last year to 31 this year.

Um, what? They are 21-17, tied for 5th in the East and in the PO picture and have won 7 of last 10 games.

Please stay in school

Should a team who traded away their future 1st round picks about 3-4 years ago tank whilst having no draft picks? Idiotic
The trade that lost the Heat those draft picks was trading for Dragic years ago, you're acting as if Miami just traded away draft picks to pick up Olynyk or something, what tf are you actually saying.

He had a hot streak shooting that coincided with opposing teams not taking the Heat seriously because they started last season 11-30. Both of those things have now reverted to the mean, with the Heat being a .500 team and Waiters being a mediocre player.

The answer is that he got paid. I hope he doesn't come back into a starter role, Miami are clearly playing better without him. Sure he's clutch as hell, but he's terrible for almost every other point in the game.

This is the whole point with them. They haven't made any catastrophically bad moves over the past 5 or so years, but every single one of them has been subpar and has built up to a point where they can't tank, can't afford any free agents, and have no noteworthy young players. Basically the Nets after the KG/Pierce trade or the pre-Process 76ers where they'll be a mediocre East team for a few years before having to blow it up.

Chris Bosh is not walking through that door, so your point is irrelevant.

For all the injuries to key players they've had, they've been really impressive.

Miami is a team I thought wouldn't even be in the playoff picture but yet they are there again playing well. I think they are right where most people expected them to be. And the fact they had injuries too just makes it a bit more impressive.

Coach Spo shows again why he is still one of the best coaches although you never know how the landscape of the east changes from now until April

I think OP is a casual fan who doesn't understand basketball that well.

They are who we thought they are. #5-8th seed couple games over 0.500.

Nothing to see here.
