Should the Panthers move on from Cam Newton?

Post#1 » by orlandomanic » Mon Jan 8, 2018 5:29 am

Just like the Chiefs and Alex Smith, and with a deep Quarterback class in this year's draft. Should the Panthers move on from Cam Newton, and draft a Quarterback in the first round?

Probably not. They're not really in position to draft a top QB.

Why?

Cam wasn't the problem yesterday. A Panthers secondary that couldn't cover me was the problem. They got lit up.

Chiefs knew what they had with Alex Smith. He's nothing more than a game manager despite what his stats this season might suggest. Cam on the other hand has championship pedigree, and he's still in the prime of his career. No way in hell is this even a discussion.

Move on from Cam Newton? Yeah, lets move on from a guy that led us to the playoffs in 4 of 5 years and to the Super Bowl once after missing the playoffs for 4 years. All this in a very tough division.

I admit that Cam bugs the crap out of me. But no.

It makes no sense to me for Carolina to move on from Cam.
Other changes need to be made and Carolina will be back on top of the Division. It's a coin toss anyway who wins the division between Carolina, Atlanta, and New Orleans.
While Cam makes his share of mistakes, he only makes the team stronger, and I expect him to be a Carolina 90% of his career. A move won't happen right now.

As far at this years draft class, Josh Allen would only make sense to me, but Carolina won't make that move.

Cam is not elite and basically an average QB with a very simple game plan to beat him, which is to basically just let him throw and not let him run because he will INT the panther to lose every time.

Carolina shouldn't move on from Cam, but if Baker Mayfield falls to the Panthers in the first round, i think it would be hard not to make the move.

I know this... if there’s an OC out there who can use Cam’s assets and build an offense that takes advantage of them while refining him as a QB, it’s Norv. That was a brilliant hire by Rivera.

But - that defense still got lit up. Therein lies the problem.

I don't buy into Cam as an elite QB or superstar in any way. I think he's limited by his accuracy and inconsistency. He has, however, proven to be good enough to get a team to a Super Bowl, which is all you can ask for of a QB. If it was that easy to get a Tom Brady, every team would have one. Usually a team that has a QB good enough to get you to a Super Bowl will never suck badly enough to draft one that warrants replacing him and QBs that hit free agency are almost always place holders. It just doesn't make sense to move on, especially since I'm guessing his jerseys sell rather well.

Fix the d first before trading him.

No, but I do think they should keep running him. Their offense is MUCH better when he runs. Yep, it'll shorten his career, but 5 more years of Cam with a super bowl ring is better than 10 years of Cam without one.

I said, "but 5 more years of Cam with a super bowl ring is better than 10 years of Cam without one".

Saying that it's worth the risk of running him more because it gives them a better chance of winning a super bowl.
