This might be my favorite thread of the year. Gaines should have been so much better than he was given his talent.

Giricek was solid.

I think steven hunter would succeed in today’s nba. Like an ekpe udoh type.

It was Baron Davis. It was the 2nd game of the season. Gaines checks in and right away Davis sees the deer in the headlights look and just completely harasses Gaines at half court, he just steals the ball away like he was taking the ball away from a child and dunks it. Career over. Baron Davis ended Gaines career in seconds lol. I actually saw a lot of Gaines in college and was happy we drafted him thought he would be a good player but man he had no confidence and could not dribble. He was literally useless.

In that sense then the Sassernator wins this contest. He had that huge night in Boston when Tmac was out. I do remember he got into a car accident that hurt his back, then we was essentially waived him, justifiably so, he sucked.

Both players were part of Doc Rivers "tall PG" experiment that ended in ruins. Clippers should have looked at that before the gave Doc free reign to make whatever player moves he wanted. We passed on guys like Tony Parker, Arenas, Jamal Tinsley, Monte Ellis and so on.

Oh yeah, that's right. That was a close game too. David Wesley hit a big 3 late and that was game 1 of the 19 gamer.

I saw Gaines first game in preseason and my friend turned to me and said “man this guy sucks”. We just both knew it was a bust pick almost instantly.

Our little run of bust picks at PF/C after Shaq was pretty awful as well.

DeClercq was pretty decent. He carved out a 10-year career as a 15-20 minute a night guy.

I'd remove him from that comparison and add Pat Burke.

I had started watching Magic games by this time, but still, I was a young teenager and hadn't yet become a basketball fanatic. Were guys like Gaines and Sasser projected to go in that range, or did Doc and his tall PG obsession reach big time for non-NBA talents?

I used to hate Wesley and his waterhead. He was one of those guys that always killed us every time he played us. Kinda like how Kris Humphries would go off for 20 against us and not even crack double digits vs anyone else.

Gaines was projected to go in the range we drafted him at. He had a pretty good college career. Sasser was definitely a reach, Tony Freaking Parker was still on the board then too!

Yea DQ was a decent backup big. But he would foul a lot hence the nickname DQ lol. You knew when he checked in he was going to get rung up for a foul in a few minutes.
