Is Boston only one piece away from being able to hang with the Warriors?

Post#1 » by WestGOAT » Wed Jan 10, 2018 6:16 pm

Ainge built a very young talented team already that will keep on improving in the near future. Especially Tatum is looking good, and with Hayward back next season, they should be favourites coming out of the East. Especially if Lebron quits on the Cavs (again).

Which player though would bring them to the next level? AD for sure, but they would have to wait longer on him, compared to say Cousins. Would he be enough? I'm not sure who else they could add. Marc Gasol doesn't really fit their time window. Or maybe they don't need a big?

If that piece is Leborn, then sure.

If Brown and Tatum make another jump next year, I could see them being right there without any major roster changes.

If they get the Lakers' pick they should trade it to the Jazz for Rudy Gobert and it's a done deal:

Irving
Brown
Hayward
Horford
Gobert

with Tatum off the bench? Yes, that's a good enough team to beat the Warriors IMO.

If either becomes a top ten player in the league by next season and either curry or KD suffer serious injury then sure maybe. Very unlikely scenario though

Brown/Tatum/Lakers pick is too green to fight the Warriors.

Horford's window is closing (closed already imo)

Chemistry is still uncertain given Gordon isn't acclimated yet and Smart contract is up.

Warriors still have 2 players better than their best player (possibly 3).

Steve Kerr/Bob Meyers is as good if not better duo than Brad Stevens/Danny Ainge (nullifying possibly the greatest advantage Boston has)

Ask this question again in 2021.

It's really ridiculous how good of a situation they're in. They're on a better than 60 win pace, will add Hayward next year, and will add a top-7 pick (or whoever they trade it for) either this draft or the next one. Two of their starters should improve massively over the next few years. On top of all that, they have 4 first rounders in the next two drafts (both of theirs, LAC, MEM) that they can use to add young talent or tinker around with trades.

I think they'll start seriously knocking on the door next season.

Lol if either became a top 10 player next season they wouldn't need Curry or KD to be hurt to hang.

If that one piece is Anthony Davis who I suspect is exactly their target and they do have the assets to acquire then YES.

There is a very damn good chance Cousins bolts and when he does there's very little reason for AD to stick around and waste his prime. Demps is a terrible GM who is clueless how to build a roster. Even if they did by some miracle keep DMC, I still think AD will leave because again it's obvious from his entire tenure as a Pelican that they don't know how to build around him. BOS being able to create a package out of Brown + Horford + LAL/SAC pick + MEM pick is about as good as it's gonna get for NOP and at that point BOS especially under Stevens will be the toughest challenge in the league unless PG + LeBron both go to PHI.

Kyrie
Hayward
Tatum
Davis
Baynes

Yeeesh....that team matches up damn well against the Warriors imo.

How so?

He's having one of the best seasons of his career this year. Career best 60% TS%, career best 3 point shooting season at 42%, career high in assists, and the most rebounds per game since 2013.

People don't just get written off cause they turn 30+.

Too many future injury concerns from your 3-5 spots IMO

Or they could trade it to GS for KD.

Only problem I see is neither one of those things is happening.
New York said Mitchell wasn't the guy you trade the sink for, then they traded it for Mikal, lol.

Kyrie
Hayward
Tatum

... is a good start. An elite big man like Anthony Davis would put us in really good position to make real noise.

You're saying this as if the Warriors situation isn't going to change at all.

Talent level would have to be at least 4 top 30ish or better players. Not sure how to pull that off.

I don't see them trading AD given he's 24 but I guess the speculation is from their inability to win games and build a legit playoff team with him.

Their best bet is to make everyone but AD and Cousins available on their roster and do a major overhaul.
