Hawks new PG - Is he any good at all?

Post#1 » by graymule » Fri Sep 8, 2017 1:25 pm

Quinn Cook - PG - Two time all star in G league and rookie of the year.
Player from Duke. He's the one who reportedly "tore up" the Hawks in the summer league.

Since there is so much unknown about next season's team, here is another one o one seems to know.

I can't say I know a ton about him but seems like his lack of size and defensive ability is working against him. But with his only competition being Malcolm Delaney, who has the same issues but also can't shoot, i'd say Cook has a good shot at the backup PG spot.

Cook had a crazy summer league and Delaney has been in hiding, hopefully working out. I have a feeling Delaney will probably be the primary backup but this Cook kid plays with some heart n hustle that I didn't see out of Malcolm last year.

Hopefully we've improved the backup PG spot by Delaney getting comfortable in the NBA and with Cook (no more Baze running point).
Should be a healthy battle between the 2 backups.

Delaney i just don't know. Honestly at times i thought he looked pretty decent but when you look at the numbers they are bad. 24% from 3, 43% on 2 pt fg. per36 he was 11/5.5 with 2.7 turnovers. Cook appears to be a far superior shooter to Delaney and with neither being a good defender I'd give Cook the edge.

Guys, I get it. Cook looked great in SL, but what's the difference between him and any number of SL HOF'ers? I have a feeling he'll be next in a long line of small(ish) guards who struggles against live bullets. He'll probably wash out after a year or so unless he hangs on based on his Duke connection.

.... all that said, I'd take him all day, any day over DelaneySucks.

Seriously though, Cook has a chance to be a solid backup. That's all I want from him.

Cook is known as a good shooter and average at everything else. Also known to have an above average basketball IQ, but the big knock on Cook is that he is not aggressive and like early Jeff Teague, he plays very passive when he gets playing time. Not a "lead dog" type of player

I actually think/hope Quinn bypasses Delaney on the depth chart.

I prefer a vet PG to backup/mentor Dennis. But, I'll settle on a young sparkplug capable of putting up big point totals and help spread the floor.

8-)

Perhaps what we see is not always what we get.

Half way through the season and the trade deadline rushing up soon. Hawks appear to be all set
to be sellers by the deadline. Priorities are young, under used players and draft picks.

Which ever we may obtain players, Bud's NBA university will hold the key.

We can guess and guess. What ever happens, someone will be sure they could have done a better deal
and someone else will know all the time that this would happen. Gee whiz.

About that PG. Hawks still have a pretty good one in the G League, just in case we dump one.
