And people wonder why this team is immature. Wall and Beal aren't leaders...but Gortat and Kieff are considerably less than that.

This teams position is terrible now. Gortat knows he won't get good value with the way the league is headed and is basically suggesting there's no starting jobs for him (which is true, too many good starting young bigs coming in next years draft alone).

Meanwhile, we're capped out and our only means to replace him is a hail mary move with our next two firsts (if we keep them)

And Ian isn't an option. He's awful.

I don't think this revelation matters one bit. At this stage of his career, Gortat doesn't have value as a trade asset whether he's retiring or not.

He's good enough to be worth his contract so some team might trade nothing (top 55 protected 2nd rounder) for him and to absorb his salary, but nobody was going to trade anything good.

The only concern about this announcement is the fact that now we know Gortat isn't going to have some kind of contract year bump in production. But then, I always considered Gortat to be a pro who works hard and takes care of his body every year, so I don't think his final year will be any different, good or bad.

It changes everything in that we thought we'd be able to keep him for something close to vet min as a stop gap solution until we develop a new center or get one some other way. That's not going to happen now. And Ian has never been close to ready to start for us. Basically we need to make a move now for a better stop gap center solution.

I hear you but maybe he should consider Golden State or Cleveland for the minimum and don't have to play much, you know teams trying to win something. Orlando?, yeah ok.

We have Gortat for one more year and Ian for a year after that.

Ideally, we draft a good prospect this summer. He plays sparingly his rookie year behind Gortat and Mahinmi. He develops nicely in his second year splitting time with Mahinmi. And he takes over as full time starter in his 3rd year when Mahinmi leaves. I really don't think Gortat's next contract was much of a factor in this calculation.

i agree with the first part. I'm not seeing any one on one trade.

Gortat might just be ready to move on with his life. More power to him.

I wish there were a way to trade him to the Warriors. McGee wants to go for numbers in a contract year. I think Marcin is better than Pachulia, but GS can't absorb his contract. I stated in the Trade thread that I wish there were a 3-way deal to acquire Marc Gasol, with Vucevic going to Memphis and Marcin plus assets going to Orlando.
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

Our team's personality is sadly hilarious. We're like the Steelers in terms of dysfunction, except more sucky.

How this team can constantly complain about the big men we have when we have CONSISTENTLY ignored drafting any bigs in the first round of any drafts for over half a decade.

This squad has been set to treadmill mode to save ernies job and reputation. Never had any hope of being a legit contender.

I feel sorry most for John Wall who has had to carry this franchise. If I were him I wouldn't have signed an extension.

What happened? I thought he wanted to retire in DC... He changes his mind as always.

THIS, Ernie will look around on the scrap-heap like always does and find an aging player. Ted is too-stupid to see it

Ehh, mostly agree... But I much prefer ignoring young bigs than ignoring young wings.
Guys like Nogueria, Udoh, O'Quinn, Dedmon, Reed, Bell, etc. are available quite often. You simply dont find that equivalent on wings as there is too much of a premium.

Don't really understand why anyone is making a big deal about this. Gortat is just reiterating what everybody has already been thinking for a while. He's not getting any younger, he plays an extremely inflated position, and the league is going to continue to phase out traditional bigs.

This is just selfish af. You expect a guy to bend over and enjoy watching his salary get castrated and then disparage him for not toeing the line. There's nothing wrong with where the league is headed. There's also nothing wrong with someone like Gortat not wanting to have anything to do with it.

Yeah, hadn't thought about it that way - must be tough on the "old-style" bigs. It is interesting watching Gasol stepping out behind the 3 point line to try to reinvent himself.

I don't have a problem with what Gortat said. I do have a problem with the Wiz not having a succession plan to replace him or upgrade after next season.

Could have drafted a kid like Allen with our 2017 1st rounder

But noooo... we had to sign Nicholson and trade him with the pick for Bogdanovic and McCullogh..

Oubre will eventually be traded for our future center
