Stein: Pistons sign Reggie Hearn of the Reno Big Horns to a 2 way contract
This news means the Kay Felder news is false or Luis Montero is being waived.
Is something bigger brewing?

Luis Montero probably cut. Hearn has been playing with the US Mens National Team to qualify it for the World Cup - being coached by somebody named Jeff Van Gundy. I guess Jeff must have put in a good word for him. Seems undersized for a 2-guard and doesn't put up the video game numbers in the G-League one expects from even a passable NBA end of bench player.

Welp, no big move in the works. Just swapping one for another.

Wow... he'll be 27 this season and has never played a minute in the NBA.
Way to swing for the fences Stan.
I feel like we have enough "hard knocks" guys on the roster already.
Can't we look for someone with more upside????

Montero wasn't doing anything with the big league club, and his production with GR doesn't look notable on paper.
So it makes sense to try another option. If JVG likes Hearn, its not hard to believe that he could be a solid 2 way option.

I hear you, but quality options aren't overly available for 2 way contracts.
These fringe type players can make a lot more $ overseas, and some agents have even advised their clients not to sign these contracts to remain free agents in the G league so that are available to be signed by all NBA teams if they excel.

Pure Grand Rapids Drive signing. He's a 2-guard, a bit undersized and pedestrian athleticism (relatively speaking of course) - seems to just be a three point shooter.

Montero was essentially just a GR piece, so at worst its a lateral move.
That said, the team could definitely use some more athleticism, especially on the wings

What's the benefit of designating him as a 2way player rather than just letting him sign with Grand Rapids?
I thought 2way deals were for players teams wanted to protect. If he has little chance of playing for the Pistons, why not save that spot for someone with more upside?

He was property of the Reno Bighorns - Sactramento's G-League team. Signing him to a two-way contract poaches him from that team to the Drive for the ROS. Nobody with more upside will sign two way contracts (10-day contracts available now), and deadline to sign them is January 15th, ie tomorrow, so timing was of the essence as well. Players can have less than four years NBA experience so KJ McDaniels and Marcus Thornton, both currently playing for the Drive are ineligible.

Welp looks like Hearn is the next guy to get minutes over Langston. Is Bradley/Kennard/SJ really injured or is something bigger about to happen?

We should sign Reggie Evans to help us with the rebounds when Dre is on the bench.

Avery Bradley (groin) did not practice on Tuesday and is listed as questionable for Wednesday's game vs. the Raptors.
This is concerning news, as Bradley was sidelined for seven straight games from mid-December through early January due to a right groin strain. Hopefully, this is more of a maintenance day off for Bradley, as opposed to a re-aggravation. We'll have to wait for a clear update from coach Stan Van Gundy before jumping to conclusions. Luke Kennard (thumb) and Stanley Johnson (hip) are also questionable for Wednesday, which means Detroit may be shorthanded at SG and on the wing.

Luke Kennard (left thumb) did not practice on Tuesday and is questionable for Wednesday's game vs. Toronto.
This is the first time Kennard has popped up on the injury report due to a thumb issue. In fact, he has yet to miss a game due to injury this season and has played over 22 minutes in each of the Pistons last two contests. Avery Bradley (groin) and Stanley Johnson (hip) are also listed as questionable, which could leave the Pistons with little depth on Wednesday. We should have an update on the status of all three players after Wednesday morning's shootaround.

Stanley Johnson (strained right hip flexor) is listed as questionable for Wednesday's game vs. Toronto.
Johnson returned from a five-game absence last Wednesday but reaggravated his hip injury in that contest and was forced to sit out Monday's game vs. Charlotte. Reggie Bullock has played well in Johnson's absence, and the Pistons have plenty of depth on the wing, so it is unlikely Johnson will be able to earn enough playing time to make a fantasy impact even when he is fully healthy.
