It really is shot selection if you are just looking at the FG%. Melo is shooting 38% of his shots from 3 and 26% are long, 16ft+, 2 point shots. He is shooting 40% on long 2s and 36% on 3s. His career percentage for long 2s is 42% and from 3 is 35%. Melo is still shooting 63% at the rim, but less then 10% of his shots are at the rim this year, which is a career low. Melo has a 48.3% eFG which is exactly his career average. His TS% is the worst since his rookie year, but that is in part because he is shooting a career worst from the FT line.

I think his attempts at the rim are down in part because he's not the same player powering up through traffic as he once was. Same goes for why his percentage at the rim is so high and considering the low volume it makes me believe most of those are open shots. Was pleasantly surprised with his ability to catch lobs these past couple games. Last year he was famously blocked by the rim on a dunk attempt.

It’s no secret that he is well past his prime. His career FG% is 45 and he’s shooting 41.5 this year. It’s not that hard to believe is it? Plus his 3PAr this season is the highest it’s ever been in his career (9.3 per 100, career = 5.1)...

sure, but still don't know why he bricks so many open shots. I liked his shots against the kings. 2 weeks ago he seemed to have turned the corner and had a lot of good shooting games. now he is slumping again. hope this changes again soon. at least he does a good job on the boards when slumping the last few games.

edit: from the houston to portland game melo shot 52.2% from the field for 8 games and now 3 games in a row under 40%

This is Melo since the Clippers game:

Overall: 29-83
Restricted Area: 3-4
In The Paint (Non restricted area): 4-7
Mid Range: 12-34
Corner 3s: 3-5
Above the break 3s: 7-33

Image

Tight and Very Tight 2s: 11/27
Tight and Very Tight 3s: 1/4
Open and Wide Open 2s: 8/16
Open and Wide Open 3s: 9/34

Catch and Shoot 2s: 4/10
Catch and Shoot 3s: 9/31
Pull Up 2s: 10/26
Pull Up 3s: 1/7

I think the main problem with him is that he simply can't adjust his game when his jumper is not falling. People always say 'Get to the FT line if your shot isn't falling', but Melo doesn't really have that option. His offense is 80-90 % 3s and long 2s. And when those don't go in, he's not helping.
I don't know what you can change about that tho: This is what he does. :-?

For the record, I voted Westbrook and George co-players of the game. Westbrook for actually shooting well and only taking 14 shots and making 8 of them which is a big departure from how Westbrook usually plays (I'm proud of you, Russ) and George for being an absolute monster on the defensive end and closing the game in the 4th.
