The Nets obviously encouraged the 6’10” Webb to shoot three’s. He took 16 shots, 15 of them from deep. He made four. Going into the game, Webb was shooting 37.7 percent from 3-point land. The Nets picked him off the Delaware 87ers roster three days ago, the deadline for adding two-way contracts.

The Nets told Webb III to shoot :o

He's coming up.

I've compared from what I've seen of James Webb III to a poor man's Trevor Ariza/Draymond Green when he's engaged.

His raw abilities are

- wingspan
- he has springs
- can shoot
- and covers a lot of ground

Let's get into some of these sets that might help the main roster soon. :)

Offense
Image
This is his raw ability to spread and set up his own shot using the high 2 man game.

Now let's get into his ability to spread the floor off his own screen.

Image
This is a flat pivot screen, which he uses to free himself up as the 2nd option. (Not many power forwards on the main roster at his size can do this) And with his ability to stretch the floor, that's a damaging tool. 4 point play set up.

Defense

Image
high screen and roll, reset, rescreen, Webb traps and reroutes the point guard.

Image
(watch the red cursor) Knicks set an off ball pivot screen to release the screener. Webb (highlighted) reads the dribble handoff screen and pressures the PG into a turnover. (poor man's Green-esque)

Image
here the Knicks attempt a transition screen, Webb jumps it, pressures the guard off his route, and covers the paint wit a trail block. (poor man's Green-esque)

Okay, so my question is (because this guy looks like he's a perfect fit):

What kept him out of the NBA thus far? This guy looks like he's got a mean shot and size to him to play both 3 and some stretch 4 in our system. why is he just now being signed to a two way?

I just want to know what are his negatives.

oh there are negatives. The games I watched him play in Philly G-League. He came off disinterested, disengaged, and just floated around the court trying to get by on athleticism. He was coming back from a knee contusion at that time and had his mins. cut via that.

Yesterday he shot 4 for 16 and I watched all 16 3's. They all were in rhythm after the first 2. He was adjusting to our pace and played wit a different mentality. More sure of what to do, not floating around wit no purpose, Doyle actually was a big reason why he wasn't shooting great looks. But I tell you even his misses looked good. He has form, an arc, consistency is the question. Has a motor, long rebounds he goes after, out of bounds, loose balls he goes after.

Interesting. The disinterest part is kind of alarming but i'll give him a clean slate here. i'm excited to see what he can do.

It was a disinterest not in effort but IQ.

Like he'd look at a drive and his man is on the 3 point line, while the PG in the middle took his teammate off the dribble, he'd blindly collapse but hesitate in the state of not knowing should I deny the 3 or help my man down in the paint. And that's when he took his eye off the ball and his man sinks a 3. But that was post knee contusion return.

What I saw last night was way different.

That I'm as excited about Webb as I am about DLos return makes me realize how sad our front court has made me since King Booker left

Booker never had 3 pt shooting ability, great hands, a steady dribble game. He was energetic, rebounds (and this kid is just as good on the boards), but Booker was the first guy to get physical. That's missed.

Eventually he'll (Webb) bulk up. But his upside I tell you. I've seen the tapes of this kid, about to watch tonight's and he's a poor man Draymond.

I'm also noticing nice plays by Doyle - both two way players look promising
So it's not that Marks doesn't make mistakes, he just fixes them quickly and effectively

It's pretty frustrating that 3Webb isn't on the all star ballot yet. When are the Nets gonna get respect?

he started this game 0 for 4, it was his home debut. His shot was off on 1 of the 4 shots in the corner 3 (it reminded me of Acy when he overshoots). in the first half. After going 0 for 4 all from 3 pt range. He proceeded to go to 5 out 6 from 3 point range.

My god I keep thinking if Acy and him are going off together. Acy at C, this kid at the 4. Defensively he's a pest. The post in bound, the center Gibson from the Magic was a good 40-60lbs heavier than him. He continuous fought to deny the post entry pass. Even on one play Gibson got so frustrated he back armed him on the throat.

The guy pressures you off your route, think of it as a blitzer. He just disrupts plays, screens, easy would be dribble handoffs, disrupts the PG to a high degree, face guards him, he runs you off the 3 pt line (so imagine him and Jarrett Allen)
Another thing is ability to fullcourt & halfcourt press the dribbler. In one play you see it in that Youtube clip, the 1st half is ending and Doyle picks up his man as he crosses the time line, pressures the strong hand and Webb ala Draymond Green just steals the ball. Would have had a dunk if he wasn't fouled too.

BTW this game ends wit Whitehead, who's improving from 3, getting trapped at the halfcourt line, team is calling for a timeout, Doyle is frantically calling for one, the referee can clearly see this and let's play continue, so Whitehead sees Webb wideopen in the paint, Webb gets the ball and someone swipe fouls his head. No foul called, He dunks the **** out of the ball and it hits all back rim. So he didn't get the call and that almost cost them the game.

Before this game starts, let's talk post D, and the poor man's Draymond Green-esque defense in the post.

Image
Notice how low Webb likes to get low on the big to fight for position, he cuts off the angle, leans in on his man who is +40-50lbs on him. And forces an out of bounds pass.

Image
here's another play, watch how he face guards his man, prompting them to go for a screen option post set, Webb gets low on Gibson, who grows frustrated wit the defense of Webb. Notice how they are left to take that terrible contested shot. All b/c of James Webb's post D

Image
Remember how I told you Gibson was growing frustrated? he was on pace to score probably 40 points if Webb wasn't there. All the sudden here is this new Net, fighting for positioning, cutting his angles and now frustrating him to the point he throws a back arm to get open. That's as good as a turn over.

Get excited. :D

Acy might need to take his minutes.

Might see this guy coming up.
