Re: Miami @ Charlotte - Saturday, Jan 20, 7 PM, EST
^^^gom, I know Tylers situation wherein he's coming from a rookie contract, and Miami can sign him with the Arenas rule. And yes Ellington situation is different.
What I'm saying is like an internal arraignment. Let say a team offered Ellington 4yrs for $55m, so basically that salary starts more than the $10.97m the Heat can offer. What I'm saying is, promise him the same total amount of $55m by signing him only a yr or 2 with a starting amount $10.97m, then when he becomes a free agent again, resigns him by giving the remaining 44m for 3yrs. I think if Ellington is with the Heat for 3yrs, then he is eligible for more money. Its not like the Arenas provision but its similar coz the salary jump the next yr like what Tyler has. Not saying Miami should do this but just pointing out an example of a deal if the Heat wants to retain him. I love to have him back but I understand if Miami let him walk coz costly for them. I'm sure a lot will of fans here will agree that Ellington has more weighs with the Heat this season than Winslow, whom I think will have a reduce role once Rodney comes back, unless another injuries to key perimeter players.

Man, I really don't want to be paying Ellington nearly $11m per.
I suggest trading for value while we can still get it.

First, Tyler wasn't on a rookie scale deal. We signed him to a 2-year minimum contract. We learned our lesson about that, so we signed McGruder and Richardson to longer deals to guarantee RFA status.
As for your suggestion about Ellington's contract, that kind of deal isn't allowed, Hoops23. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it's not permitted to add these types of clauses to contracts and verbal arrangements are a violation of the CBA.
Also, you can't just make up a value for a contract. The difference from year to year has maximum amounts. It's a lot less flexible than you think.
As for what I've bolded, can you explain what you mean? I don't see Justise's salary as a variable in signing Wayne Ellington. I explained before that you need to cut about $28M from our cap to sign Ellington to about $12M (a million more than the Early Bird contract).
Again, 122-108M=14M + (let's say $2M for two slots, but it's probably 3 or more) = 16M + 12M (ellington salary) = $28M. Justise is on about $5M so you need to get $23M more. Likewise, to sign Ellington to $14M, you need to reduce our cap by $30M.
How much do you think is a fair salary for Ellington? I think it's about $10.97M
You do understand that you need to get us below cap to sign Ellington any other way than Early Bird, right? Those are the rules. You could use a MLE or BAE, but those values will be smaller than EB = $10.97M.

I think Wayne's shooting is too valuable to the team not to keep (and pay) him. TJ, DJJ, Winslow, McGruder, and Rich would really have to show me something the rest of the season to think otherwise.

How much would you pay him? I laid out our options and how they relate to the salary cap. What would you choose to do? How would you keep him?

Wayne has had a nice little resurgence here, but with the backend of Tyler Johnson's contract coming into play next season, along with J-Rich's extension, not to mention Waiters under contract for 3 more seasons, it'll be tough to commit the likely 8-10 million for a 30-year-old shooting specialist.
This team would have to have one hell of a playoff run, I'm talking conference finals minimum, to justify jumping into the luxury ta for this core group.

Having a career yr too, It's only logical to at least attempt to get something for him before shelling out long term deal

Oh yeah, it's tough. I think if you can get him for less than 9m/per you do it and find ways to cut other costs later. Shooting is just so important and he's the only reliable one on the roster.

You won't get him for less than $10M if he's still shooting 3's like this in March. Also, he's more than a shooting specialist. He's even playing decent defense.
I'd sign him for the Early Bird and hope another team doesn't match. The $4M above tax can be purged by moving someone else for a cheaper contract if we attach a pick. It would have to be Tyler Johnson probably.

I think you're overvaluing his worth around the league. The most money Kyle Korver ever made was about 7 million dollars. He was actually considered a reasonable defender. Just because a lot of bad players made more isn't definitive. You may think Wayne has been good this year on defense (and he has) but I doubt it has much affect on his contract. This is also Wayne's first truly good year in the league. It also could be argued that he is somewhat a product of an offense created just for him. Does some team really want to take a chance that he can repeat that performance with a high buck contract?
But beyond all of that I think you're assuming he will necessarily go for the maximum he can get. Not everybody is wired that
way. If the team has a successful playoff run and Wayne is happy with his place here, I'd bet he'd instantly rip the pen from the hand of Riley if he was offered a 4/49 contract. I don't think it will take that much. 4/40 to 44 assuming he finishes the year strong.

It’s a different economy though. The cap is higher than when Korver signed that deal. I’d be shocked if no team offered Wayne a 3/36 type deal this offseason, should he continue this level of play. That team should not be us though.

I understand what I said, that its a violation under the CBA, that signing Ellington for a yr and then when he becomes a free agent by 2019, resign him with big money. But there are teams who do that, and got away with it. Like what the Spurs did with Ginobili in the past. Last off season, UD was asking 2yrs 6m, and Miami heed to his request by signing him 1yr $4m and a guaranteed minimum salary this season. By doing so, Haslem didnt lose his money and the Heat preserve the cap space last yr for Hayward.
Winlow salary for 2018-19 season is $3.45m... And if you dumped it, its not worth getting the team under the tax. And I never said it will put Miami under the tax with a resign Ellington. But like I said before, dumping him for future pick or picks will help Miami. Dumping his $3.45m salary actually saves Miami $7.3m. And dumping Winslow in the off-season will not hurt Miami coz next season, Heat has J-Rich, McGrudrer and JJ who can play at SF too. Heat is loaded at SG with Waiters, Tyler and Ellington (if resigns) whom one of them are given minutes at SF. And I dont see Winslow better than the players I mentioned, then why not dump him to lower the Heat tax payments with an resign Ellington and getting back picks that Riley can use in trades. You know Riley, he likes using picks in trades.
FYI, though I like Miami to resign Ellington in the off-season, I am not insisting they should coz I understand the tax predicament to them. If teams gives him more than $10.9m and Heat wants to match, my suggested deal is possible even its prohibited coz lot of teams got away with it. And what I said in my previous post is an answer to your post that team may offer more than 10.9m and Heat cannot match. I believe he will not get more than $11m, and its you who said he may get more and Miami cannot match, that is why I suggested such deal. In reality, Ellington plays a big role with Miami this season and has more value than Winslow.
