Agreed. Horst is an easy target because of comments about hitting the ground like a rocket and his past work at FedEx, but I'd say he has a passing grade right now as a GM. That's not saying a ton, but he is certainly better than any of us expected.

He's an easy target because he was a "reluctant compromise" after a botched GM search. Not exactly a guy you put all your eggs in with the future of the franchise and the future of Giannis.

The fact that he was a compromise after a botched GM search is completely irrelevant when we're discussing Jon Horst the GM, though.

Its relevant when we're discussing how much real power we think he has. Did he have authority to fire Jason Kidd and then tell the owners after? I highly doubt it. Does he have authority to make final calls on any deadline deals that could significantly shake up and affect the construction of the roster going forward? At a time when you need to prove to your young superstar that your making the necessary moves take that next step, and eventually convince him to sign another contract? I highly doubt it.

Sounds to me that it was Horst's idea first and foremost, and he had the nads to go to the owners over it. If the reports are true, that Kidd flipped out in practice, this makes sense.

Any time your'e dealing with hands-on owners, you're probably going to have to run things by them prior to taking action. I don't think there are a lot of GMs out there who are free to do whatever they want without consulting ownership.

And, again, you're just making wild assumptions based on how the GM search went down. How Horst was selected literally does not matter.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't think Horst just up and fired Kidd without having to clear it with ownership of course. But Horst absolutely had more power in that organization than Kidd (after years of ugly basketball and ugly relationships) did as of yesterday.

Not a good career move for Kilpatrick to dance on Kidd's grave, but his happy dance does hint at some of the soap opera things being discussed here.

Hoping for better days ahead and a more collegial tone here.

This is real GM not the good old boys club Sid. Collegiality was necessary for Save Our Bucks, not so much anymore. Quite honestly the collegial speak about wanting Kidd gone could have very much sparked conversation.

I don't think that the organization leaks anything. I think that it looks the best for the Bucks that they don't. Kidd is going to run his mouth as much as he can, because he is essentially going to be fighting for occupational relevancy. I give Horst a lot of credit for having more pull than Hammond to oust Kidd. Now it is done.

So it sounds like Horst fired Kidd off the cuff in response to Kidd likely being an assho!e at practice (imaginable a last straw sort of blow-up). Then he had to go to Feigin/LED, likely pre-loaded in his head with this NHL “why wait for the inevitable” rationale, to deliver the news, somewhat forcing LED to choose between himself and Kidd. Obviously and correctly they chose Horst. I wonder also about the timing with how and when they leaked to Woj. Could Horst have gotten to Woj quick in order to keep the story clean-ish? When was Giannis told and by whom?

Pure speculation, but even if Horst pulled the trigger, Feign probably had some level of input on the mechanics of the execution (pun intended). It's just that Feign's done this kind of thing before - and Horst hasn't.

I don't know... There's different layers to mind-games.

Kramer's "Instant Replay" made reference to the differences Lombardi had with the way he handled different personalities on the great Packer teams of the 60's. Starr was never shredded by Lombardi, but he really ripped into several of the other players, including future Hall of Famer's, when he felt they needed motivation. But that was fifty years ago - times and methods have changed.

Sometimes that method works, often times it's just destructive.
