The South woke up Wednesday to a two-part Arctic mess. First came a thin blanket of snow and ice, and then came the below-zero wind chills.

a meteorologist for the National Water Service says the forecast calls for 1 to 1-and-a-half inches of snow to fall in metropolitan Atlanta through Wednesday morning, with localized higher amounts.

Gov. Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 83 counties, spanning much of central and north Georgia.

I know all too well the difficulties of southern cities in dealing with even a modicum of snow and wintry weather.

There is a layer of ice beneath the snow, temp is currently 12 degrees with a wind chill of -2. So yes it's arctic conditions for the South. If you don't have a 4WD, stay off the ice.

Serious question -- this seems to happen every other winter where the entire city shuts down for a couple of inches.

How can Atlanta expect to host a February Super Bowl if they have to shut down anytime this kind of weather pops up?

So unless you want to just restrict the game to those locales it's still a pretty safe bet in Atlanta. IF the Super Bowl were today in Atlanta it'd be fine. Case in point the national championship game last week. Of course Trump managed to screw that one up singlehandedly. Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

We'll see. But the city/county governments have to be more prepared for this kind of weather. It's happening more frequently now than the decade [I] lived there.


Most northern cities have contingency plans in place to deal with heavy ice and snow.

Atlanta's ability to deal with these scenarios is...lacking.

Nathan Deal told reporters he was "not satisfied" with how his state dealt with the 2.6 inches of snow plus the sheets of ice that it turned into, leading to massive gridlock throughout metro Atlanta. In addition to students stranded at school, many drivers camped out in their cars or abandoned them by the hundreds along thoroughfares big and small.

Eh. That was 2014 and it was a freakish perfect storm of issues. It hasn't happened since simply because most people learned how to see it coming. The city is too big to throw everyone on the roads at once even without ice. The biggest problem is total lack of public transit options for the majority of people.

But being able to deal with periodic ice storms is expensive and no one around here wants to pay for anything. Developers are allowed to build with impunity with very little contribution or regard for the infrastructure requirements. The solution requires money from those who are continually reaping windfalls at the citizens expense. But instead of actually going after that money we are doing the opposite and dropping public money in their laps in the name of 'jobs'. Or worse, because we want to be a 'world class city'. Stupidest phrase there is.

The big chicken is a classic though! The $2 billion robot sphincter is going to be the place everyone hates in 5 years and in 15 it will get imploded.

The Mercedes-Benz logo makes the building more appealing compared to what the logo and sponsorship could be. The building it's self is more appealing than I first gave it credit for when the design on paper first came out.

I drove past the Big Chicken within the last month.
I live on the north side of town and rarely drive in that area but I like how fresh and clean the Big Chicken looks. It looks like it recently received a new paint job within the last year.

How about the classic Varsity downtown? The parking structure is far from appealing. I would like to see some changes made to it since the entire downtown area is evolving.

I'm an old codger but we're sterilizing the city. Pretty soon everything is going to feel like a big shopping mall. You have to leave the stuff alone that everyone loves about Atlanta or it just becomes something else entirely. I'm not totally anti progress but everyone around here complains that we don't have a fenway or wrigley field or classic pubs and bars and restaurants that everyone grew up going to. It's because it all gets wiped out and we end up with a damn mccormick and shimizz or ruths chrisss.

I'm an old codger but we're sterilizing the city. Pretty soon everything is going to feel like a big shopping mall. You have to leave the stuff alone that everyone loves about Atlanta or it just becomes something else entirely. I'm not totally anti progress but everyone around here complains that we don't have a fenway or wrigley field or classic pubs and bars and restaurants that everyone grew up going to. It's because it all gets wiped out and we end up with a damn mccormick and shimizz or ruths chrisss.

Seriously though, I actually agree with you. Atlanta lacks an identity, in part, because of the reasons you mention.

It's like the city leaders made too much of an effort to appeal to the convention community back in the day so the city has always been a bit sterile. Lots of chain restaurants and such, not much tradition.

Oh and congrats to Larry Wayne. That's when the Barves were the Braves. I haven't watched an inning of baseball in about 3-4 years now.

Hence we end up with a $2 billion stadium that is basically the same as the old one but with bigger TVs, a leaky roof, a corporate boxes so big that half the seats are empty.

ESPN puts Nate Silver's site up for sale

FiveThirtyEight, the prediction site run by the political numbers guru, is on the block.


The latest forecasts show that Nate Silver is highly unlikely to remain at ESPN.

The network is exploring a potential sale or spinoff of FiveThirtyEight, the political and sports analytics site headlined by Silver.


“FiveThirtyEight is a tremendous asset to ESPN, and together we’ve created exceptional content. We are exploring, with Nate, a variety of options for the future, and any discussion of exactly what that might look like would be premature,” the network said in a statement.

The news was first broken by The Big Lead, which reported that possible options included sale of the site to The Atlantic or spinning it off to Disney corporate sibling, ABC News. An ESPN official confirmed that those are two possible destinations.
