Re: 2018 Trade Deadline Thread
I am torn. I do want Cho and Cliff gone after this season. It’s time to start fresh. I also think it wise to trade assets for picks (if good ones) and tank. BUT, I also get that we aren’t going to guarantee anything good by doing that. This league is tough to get any team to a pinnacle point of achievement without superstars (plural) who all want to gather together via free agency. Warriors built theirs through great drafting, some luck and FA attraction. Houston is trying to do that, Boston might have done it, and Cleveland’s trying to hold onto it. Other teams, even with some stars, just can’t break through.
So, are we closer to being a team that can just attend the playoffs but never contend? Or a perennial under achiever with a couple of good players keeping us on a go nowhere treadmill? That is the dilemma.
If we could deal Batum for a better player that might help. But where does that get us in the long run? Nobody wants to buy stuff from our yard sale. Kemba is our best, yet he’s not really a closer. He will have to be paid huge $ too.
It’s hard to put all this time and effort into a team, then have to admit failure. MJ has a decision to make.

I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Hire Hinkie, no joke. Philadelphia had a worse roster when they started tanking, bottomed out completely, yet here we are 4 years later and Phila has a young and exciting playoff team and way better future than the Hornets can hope to have in the next 4 years.
Pull the plug, bottom out, start over.

They haven't even dived into their cap space either besides reddick and embiid .

The Hinkie strategy only works if you land a pick that has a generational talent available. And even then, they're only 2-for-however many lottery picks they have had. If Embiid never gets healthy what happens? They've put their fanbase through a half decade of nearly unwatchable basketball only to draft Nerlens Noel (eventually traded for Justin Anderson and is now rotting on the bench of another bottom feeder), MCW (horrific player somehow miraculously traded for the Lakers pick that still has yet to convey), they waste their 2014 pick on someone who never plays, waste their 2015 pick on Okafor, who they had to pay to dump. Before they landed the #1 pick in 2016 (Simmons), The Process was looking like a colossal failure. What happens if they pick anywhere else but #1 in that draft? Is a player like Brandon Ingram worth spending 3-4 years in the cellar? I won't judge too hard with Fultz yet but things are looking weird with him and not in a good way.
You need an awful amount of luck to pull that off. I'm willing to try it, since he was a masterful trader for Philly, but it is FAR from a sure thing. Knowing our luck, the 2019, 2020, and 2021 drafts would yield talent similar to the 2004, 2006, or 2013 drafts, with one or no stars at the top, and we'd be putting ourselves through misery only to come out with more Cody Zellers, Adam Morrisons, and Emeka Okafors. There weren't any superstars available at our pick even though we had rolled out a team for 82 games as bad as any Hinkie team in those years.
It's even worse now with the new system- the worst three teams in the league are only given a 14% chance each, the worst in the league is nearly as likely to fall to 5th (47.9%) as they are to grab a top 4 pick (52.1%). The third worst team can theoretically fall to the 7th pick. Ask Orlando how picking 5th through 7th every year has gone for them.

Trade for first round picks WITHOUT TRADING KEMBA!
All we need is a Top 6 pick and we can land a star to pair with Kemba but Cliff won't play rookies so I'm torn but Cho most definitely has to go after this season!

Okafor was mistreated in Philly. He killed it last night playing for Brooklyn and has scored well for them when given decent minutes.

Okafor is a very poor man's Al Jefferson. Even the real thing himself would only make a bad offense decent. A guy like that isn't making a decent offense good, and isn't making a good offense great. He'll get his points, but at what cost? He typically kills ball movement and defense. He's a backup caliber player in today's NBA.

He's working on his three point shot, if the experiment works then he can still be a starter in the NBA if he never becomes a three point threat, you're right.

that's a major assumption, since he hasn't made a 3 since his rookie year. If he's legitimately a good shooter from there then sure, but if that's like Jared Sullinger shooting threes, forget about it and get in the paint.
Regardless, there is no starting job anywhere in the league for a center as bad at defense and rebounding as I saw from him in Philly.

I wouldn't. I'd prefer Frank at center and I don't like Frank at center.

Look for long term value. Dont trade draft picks unless its for a star. Don't trade young players for older players unless there is a significant talent difference.
If the plan is to fire Cho after this season then tell him now so he doesn't do something crazy to try to save his job.

if he knows he's gone then what incentive does he have to make a good trade? If he's got one foot out the door, then he could trade for a bunch of **** contracts and leave. Where does that leave us?

There isn't much point in making a trade to try to salvage this season and doing nothing is probably better, so I'm fine if he just decides to not do anything because he is out the door anyways. A desperate GM can devastate a franchise.
If he purposely wrecked the franchise out of spite then he would just be ruining any future job prospects with the league. Not sure what incentive he would have to do that, unless he is just that petty and would screw himself over just to get revenge for losing his current. Not sure if that is very likely.

Having said that, if we just swap Batum for Bradley, the Hornets probably win 70% of their remaining games

We could work with another team. Either the Blazers (mc collum) or Orlando (Fournier). Just need to find the good package/picks to make it possible.
Even if Batum is still here, i would just do it and move Batum at sf (or as 6th man untill he can be traded).
I had proposed a three teams trade couple weeks ago on trade board (basically Mc Collum/nurkic for Drummond, Lamb for Bradley + fillers). Pistons fans don't want to shop Drummond, but even if Drummond does not move, some package can be done even without involving R Jackson.
This one would work but would require some compensation for Orlando obviously.

I would hate to see Lamb going but that could be a good option (although the fans of the Blazers who I read on the GB were in absolute love with McCollum). I would give this team one last opportunity next season, and if everything fails...blow it up and go for the rebuild 8Althoug it will be sad to see Kemba go). For this trade deadline, I don't expect anything else than a little Cho move to land us someone in the likes of Tyreke Evans.

Re: 2018 Trade Deadline Thread
Personally I find the anticipation of waiting to see what the team does at the trade deadline far more interesting than the actual games they play these days. Even if they choose to do nothing that's a choice with interesting ramifications.
My personal bet is that it's a quiet trade deadline for the Hornets. Maybe they make a small move to shore up big man depth or strengthen backup PG ... but I'm thinking that the major moves will all come this summer.

My picks:
