The trade and my thoughts on what happens next

Post#1 » by Kaboom3 » Tue Jan 30, 2018 4:08 am

First off, anyone who complains about the big trade is absolutely clueless about basketball and for that matter a franchise making money. The Pistons now have a star player and a person that fans will be willing to pay to go see play. You really think that anyone at all would be excited to go see Avery Bradley and Tobias Harris play? Get serious. The Pistons are not likely to win an NBA championship at any point with BG but they sure as hell have a better chance with him than they do with the two they moved out. I love the trade, love it.

Now here is the part that some fans probably don't want to hear, especially Kennard fans like myself. I don't think the Pistons are done and I fully expect for Kennard to be moved. Don't know where but as soon as I saw that the Pistons basically flat out refused to move Kennard in the BG deal is because there is something else in the works with SVG. Time will tell but I just have a very weird feeling that the Pistons are not done making major moves before the deadline.

I think its more likely Kennard was refused because we actually need him going forward. We can't run out there with Langston Galloway lol. We are thin at SF with Stanley Johnson (unreliable) and Reggie Bullock (injury prone). I could see him making a run at a guy like Bazemore. Leuer + Galloway for Bazemore.

I see us dealing the trade exception for Jordan Clarkston. We still need another scorer and he would be insurance for Reggie and Luke if he struggles in the larger role he's likely to step into.

I think we ride out the season, unless somebody really likes Ellenson and we send him to G-League for a three game showcase before the trade deadline. Just don't have the bullets to get anything else done right now.

76ers would need to add in some more salary. Not sure we need another PF either with Griffin, Tolliver, Ellenson, Johnson and Leuer still on our roster.

Kennard isn't being moved unless we're bringing a star player back. He's shown a lot of promise & we need his shooting more than ever right now.
Unless we're getting Kemba back, I see it as pretty unlikely, regardless of your "weird feeling".

1. Kennard isn't being moved.

2. No one questioning the trade is questioning it because they'd rather have Harris & Bradley than Griffin. They question it because of the financial commitment to one guy - who is always hurt - with the team still not in a position to win, and now with no draft pick either. Sure fans will pay to see Blake at first. But if the team isn't winning, these fans will stop coming regardless of who's on the roster.

I give credit for trying to make a splash, and Blake is a great talent when healthy. But it seems a bit haphazard considering where the team is. I'm rooting for it to work. We'll see.

Too bad we couldn't get Dekker included instead of one of the other bigs. We have four wings on our roster now - Kennard, Galloway, Bullock, Stanley Johnson.

Is Gores willing to pay the tax this season? Maybe we could spend the Leuer DPE (should we get it) on a post-deadline released player like a Vince Carter.

I'm wondering if Detroit would part with Stanley Johnson for Courtney Lee. I think he's as good as gone from the Knicks.

The only way that even remotely gets off the ground is if New York takes Leuer as well. Even then, I'm skeptical Detroit pulls the trigger.

New York would certainly have to take money back to make it work.

Ish Smith - Jackson might be back after ASB
Langston Galloway - Stan will go with the veteran over the rookie 10x out of 10.
Reggie Bullock - better shooter than Johnson. Stanley and Kennard could "lead" second unit - seem to have chemistry.
Blake Griffin - of course
Andre Drummond - of course

Atlanta says no. They are not trying to get rid of Bazemore.
Luer and Galloway combined makes slightly less ($1.5 mil ish) than Bazemore for the next 2 years, so there is no incentive for Atlanta.

Biggest need is a back-up point guard improvement to Ish Smith. Smith has proven he cannot start in the league and with Reggie Jackson's injury issues both ROS and next season and beyond we can't afford to have to play with Ish starting long stretches with Stan's point guard centric offense.

Not a change to make mid-season... but maybe we could go full Princeton with Blake/Dre. We can be Sac East; score some points, be fun to watch, and ultimately accomplish nothing!

What's next? I'm sure SVG is still looking for another trade for a wing player and possibly another PG for the short term, although not sure what we would use for assets. But after last night, Bullock and Stanley were looking good. Maybe they will respond to the opportunity and we're going to be ok at the wings.

Judging by SVG interview, it looks like we tried hard to not go over the LT this season AND next season, so that is obviously a concern. I don't think we'll make any significant move that involve us taking on money. We might add a min salary player (with our TPE or DPE we might have both) or someone who gets waived but I think that's it.

I am converned with our PG and wings depth.
