I hope I'm wrong and I've tried to reframe this trade to make me feel better but just doesn't make sense and it's scary when your professional basketball minds like SVG & Bowers have ulterior motives that don't allow them to see the reality.

I think it worked great for the Tigers. They realized they were close and went for broke. They paid what it took to bring stars in and it resulted in numerous playoff appearances, 3 ALCS appearances, and 2 World Series appearances. They were just never able to get over the hump. Spending as they did put them in the position to win the championship - a position they wouldn't have been in otherwise. They realized this was their chance and cashed in all their chips. It's not the only path to the championship, but it certainly is one. They swung for the fences and almost got it. I have no issue with that.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

So 17% of the arena is empty. Capacity of the building is 20,491. They are averaging 17,419 paid tickets right now. There are also probably a ton of no-shows (that bought tickets or had access to corporate tickets) that won't show up and therefore won't be spending money on food & drinks inside of the arena. I'm not even going to count those. You got about 3,072 fans officially missing from the arena every game not even counting paid no-shows. So about $135,168 of revenue per game is being missed out. Over the course of a regular season with 41 home games, this is about $5,541,888 of missing dollars a year minimum. And those same people that could've bought tickets would usually buy food & drinks inside the arena as well. So I can't fault Tom Gores completely when they might be bleeding money right now.

Nice analysis, although Gores isn't exactly bleeding money when you consider what he bought the franchise for and what it is worth now.

in the same breath of this idea, do you guys really think that in this offseason we couldn't trade him to a team for another brand name superstar or young prospect.

vs

AB would be worth nothing because he's gone, TH is now a expiring contract looking to get paid and first round pick that will be 1 pick away from a superstar.

A potential added value is this may also help Dre's brand name and marketability therefore helping our teams.

I don't see the big picture, but I also don't see contraindications about this move.

AB was good as gone and had no value ; Tobias had his flaws and retaining him after next season could have been pretty expensive, probably > 20 mln per year ; the pick could have been a dice to throw, nothing more ; Boban was dead money.

If Griffin experiment will work, we'll have a legit superstar or, in the worst scenario, an asset to trade and cash in. If Griffin fails, we have good chance to land a top pick in 2019, 2020 etc and in 2020 we can really start from ground 0.

I won't fault Gores for "putting his money where his mouth is."
