The trade and my thoughts on what happens next

Judging by SVG interview, it looks like we tried hard to not go over the LT this season AND next season, so that is obviously a concern. I don't think we'll make any significant move that involve us taking on money. We might add a min salary player (with our TPE or DPE we might have both) or someone who gets waived but I think that's it.

I am converned with our PG and wings depth.

At least we have all our picks back as soon as the draft is over. Not saying I want to be in the business of trading 1st rounders but the Blake trade changes the course of action now and if the opportunity arises to form a big 3 we have them in our arsenal again.

I know there is some mixed feelings with this trade, but it does make sense from a basketball and business perspective.

A full on rebuild would have been intriguing, and something I was open to. However, we can’t rebuild without also dumping Drummond. We have a 2.5 year window with him if he doesn’t pick up his PO on the final year, and a rebuild would have caused him to walk after that. The rebuild also wouldn’t be very effective with him on the roster, as we’d likely never completely bottom out.

Bottom line is we had three options: rebuild and trade Drummond, stay the course, or make a move to win now and build around Drummond. We’re clearly choosing the last option, and acquiring Blake is a pretty reasonable approach to that plan. At the very least, I think staying the course was the worst option, as it’s been pretty clear for the past few seasons this team needed a major shakeup. We have that now, so hopefully we climb into the upper ranks of the eastern conference during the next few seasons.

This is something to think about too. Are we attractive enough now for those vet minimum type of players who sign for cheap to win? I mean there's only so many GSs of the world

Haven't heard if its been approved or not, But Detroit might have a disabled player exception for Leuer to use. I also think Brice Johnson is very cuttable.

Yeah, they have a couple options.

If they do decide to use one, I have to think they would use the DPE as it expires at the end of the season, whereas the TPE is available for a calendar year.

Any veteran cut usually signs for the pro-rated vets minimum do they not? Or does their full year still count for cap/tax purposes?

Say Vince Carter is waived and clears and is a UFA. If we signed him to a vet minimum contract for the ROS that puts us over the cap even though we only really pay him maybe $1M for the ROS?

If we trade Ellenson for a future second rounder (he has to still be worth that right?) than we'd have an extra $1.7M "under the cap" and thus 3.7M to pay a veteran post-deadline cut and the open roster spot.

Ellenson for Tyreke Evans fits here - Evans makes $3.3M, Ellenson 1.7 and we're 2M under the tax so we'd still have $400K breathing room. He has to be by far the most impactful player at that salary price tag.
