I fear that these agents speaking out today against the owners and the slow FA market is only going to solidify the impasse for now. None of these big name guys left is going to want to be the first guy who accepts what is perceived to be a "lowball" offer.

I suspect that most of these free agents are being offered fair per year dollar amounts, but teams are balking at the number of years which the agents and players want.
Boston likely offered JD Martinez big money per year, but only 4-5 years when he wants 6-7 years. Arrieta and Boras are likely asking for 5-6 years and teams aren't willing to offer more than four. Same for Lynn and Cobb, teams likely aren't willing to offer more than 3 or 4 years at most. Reports are it's the number of years as to why Hosmer isn't signed.
Teams and GM's seem to have finally learned lessons from the past when it comes to free agency. More often than not, it isn't the yearly salaries paid to prominent free agents which causes teams problems so much as the 5th/6th/7th/8th or more years on long term mega contracts, leading to excessive dead money, especially for free agents over 30 years old.
This is a trend i see continuing going forward.

Re: 2018 Brewers Discussion - Brewers Sign Matt Albers, 2/$5M (pg 66)
I think there are several factors at play:
1. This class isn't that great.
2. A ton of teams are looking at next year's group.
3. Cap rules are harsher.
4. Many teams feel that the Cubs, Dodgers, Nationals, Red Sox, Yankees, Astros, and Indians are going to be really difficult to beat regardless of what they add.
5. No desire to overspend on mid-teir FAs.
And yes, possibly collusion. At least passively.

Im not sure if there was a typo that you fixed or if I was just seeing things, but I’m going to pretend it still says “my” because I enjoy this gif reply so much to thinking you accidentally wrote that Davies doesn’t blow your guys.
So. Where were we?Gianstoppable wrote:Davies is a good pitcher but that's it, he doesn't blow my guys.

Might be why brewers are willing to spend. Big Boys are sitting out for the most part (outside of Cubs) so there are "bargains" to be had.
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.
Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

Maybe owners are finally wising up... every FA class there are 2 or 3 guys on the wrong side of 30 that end up getting way too long of deals. When it's NYY and LAA, they can get away with it for the most part. If you're Tampa, or Milwaukee say... 10 years/200M is gonna ruin your franchise in 5 or 6 years.

I mean... cmon
Boras:
‘The issue is competition..
Losing is acceptable only if there is a effort to win. The difference between an accident and murder is intent. Teams are intentionally murdering season's and fans are dying with it.’
I guess Boston is throwing away it's entire season next year by not paying JD Martinez in 2025...

This is total posturing from Stearns but there hasn't been any real news at all so this is what we get:

Biggest need was pitching. I’d be disappointed if I were him. BUT, deals may be had later.
It’d be a callback to a classic TT tactic!

Re: 2018 Brewers Discussion - Brewers Sign Matt Albers, 2/$5M (pg 66)
That gives me faith in him. He’s not going to make a dumb trade.
I think he thought he could get some deals pitching and it didn’t work out but he took his shot. I like that the technique.
I’m still not sure if I’m pissed or not about the Yellich trade. I think it’s good for the future, the present and cost what a great player should cost. Especially at his age.
Either way it makes the team better. Question is how much did last years team over achieve and can they do it again?
I don’t think so. I expect regression.

Re: 2018 Brewers Discussion - Brewers Sign Matt Albers, 2/$5M (pg 66)
It's always a good debate of going for it vs wait and see approach. Would the Brewers have been better off if they didn't trade Lawrie for Marcum and Escobar, Odorizzi, Cain and Jeffress for Greinke? Maybe. But you never know. Yeah, they fell two games short of the world series but they went for it. Sometimes in smaller markets you have to find a time where you can push some chips in and go for it. I'm not saying gut the farm for Archer but if you feel the deal isn't robbery you go for it. Still room to add a FA pitcher if you want and that squad can compete for years. It's not cut and dry that there's only one way to do this. Just my opinion

Re: 2018 Brewers Discussion - Brewers Sign Matt Albers, 2/$5M (pg 66)
I'm not in favor of giving up that kind of haul for Archer. If they were committed to going for it, they should have pursued Gerrit Cole. Astros didn't give up much for him, and he still has two years of control. It's possible that Pittsburgh would have wanted a premium to move him in the division, though I don't know why they would care where he ends up if they're tearing it down.
Either way, they still need a frontline starter. They don't have to be impatient, but they can't be impotent at this point, IMO.

Yeah, no point in doing that kind of trade and I'm pretty confident Stearns won't. That proposed trade HH19 from BF mentioned was ridiculous. That'd be a bigger haul for them than the Greinke trade.

Greinke only had 1.5 years of control fwiw.
I wouldn't do the proposed deal, no chance, but just saying... Archer being locked up for 4 years so cheap adds a ton of value.

I don't think he's full of ****. I think he really does have a buddy close to the team that throws him a bone every once in a while. I also think hh19 likes the attention and people expect him to know every little detail about what the brewers are doing. It's just like what happened with buckpack
only a fan, only an opinion

I really wonder what the hang up is with Darvish.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.
