Are they crazy enough to pull the trigger on him with the first pick?
If they truly believe he can be Curry-esque, why not? However, I don't have Young in my top 3. Orlando is in an awkward state. They've started to entertain offers for Gordon who was from the previous regime. I don't think they're serious about trading him, but they're probably hesitant to give him the max. Their "key" players excluding Payton are Fournier, Gordon, Isaac, and Vucevic. The main prospects are Gordon and Isaac who are primarily PFs, maybe SFs. Isaac might be a C down the road. This is where the draft gets complicated for them.
If you have Gordon-Isaac moving forward, where does
Ayton fit? He doesn't...I don't think you want Gordon playing SF. Where does
Bagley fit? He doesn't fit either because they'd have no interior presence. What about
MPJ? Not really... I don't think you want Isaac playing at C right now.
JJJ could be interesting, but does he have the size and strength to play C right now? That's an extremely thin front-court of Gordon-JJJ or Isaac-JJJ.
Doncic is the only one that does fit. He can play SG in their lineups, but act as a PG on offense.
Does Orlando go BPA? At this point, it doesn't seem like they're sold on Gordon being their franchise player if they're willing to look at offers. Do you negate roster fit with Gordon/Isaac to take another big like Ayton or Bagley?
If Orlando thinks Young could become a top 10 PG, I think they should take him at #1. PG is the most important position in the NBA. Here's an interesting question. Would you rather have a top 10 PG or a top 5 C?
