Re: OT: Investing - Stocks/Mutual Funds/Bonds/Crypto
If your stock is going down and you want to sell now with the hopes it will keep going down so you can buy more at the lower price sure you would have more shares. But if you've lost money on your original investment then you can't claim it if you rebuy within 30 days. And if you've made money on your original investment, despite the price drop, then you're paying taxes on the sale. Short or long term depending on how long you've held it. And then of course there is the chance you sell thinking it will go lower for a rebuy and then it doesn't go lower, it goes back up.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

VIX (some kind of volatility fund) or VXX (shorts the S&P I think) are both way up. I've been tinkering with the idea of watching these but haven't quite figured out the best way to use them personally.

Everything went up in lockstep like crazy the last 60-days. Due for a correction.

Indeed, and referring to Crypto remember my previous post. The BTC index has now crashed below the 61% resistance. The full retrace is anywhere from the aggressive 3k mark to the more conservative 5.5k mark. I've already bought in a couple times near the 7k mark because I just couldn't trust that strong resistance. BUT, we're still within that window of descent as I see it.
My general opinion is we'll hit that basement here in the next 3 days. I think the banks are in the final push of a mass sell-off which helped further pass the 61% resistance. I also believe the rebound will begin the Feb9-10 range with a lot of momentum gaining in the day period of the 11th - 21stt. This is where I'll try to make profits. I will pull those profits out by the 5th-10th of March.
A big FWIW if you give two shards.

Interesting analysis. I have been impressed more or less with it so far, pretty accurate. If I see it hit 3.5k I'll probably buy back in haha but I'm glad I sold when I did a week ago.

Oh, man. Me too! Right? I sold initially at the 10.5k mark. Then I sold again at the brief spike to 9.3k. Every time I go through a dip it's an initiation on trusting my process. I mean, here the market goes again topping the 7k mark. I'm going to stay firm. I pulled my final buy-in of 6.5k to wait out this 2 day period. Ha! I really hope I don't eat s###.
EDIT: Of course, as I look deeper today the current descent had pinged back North almost perfectly at the newly adjusted 50 day MA. Now, it's a matter of seeing what happens over the next 24-48 hrs. BUT, there are definitely signs of hope for Bulls and things to seriously consider for Bears like myself.

You are not alone sir. After getting my Xmas bonus, I invested a bunch of it in the market and was initially feeling great, but then down, down, downnnnnnnnn
Luckily, most everything was really long term investments and I knew that going it, so it is just about being patient and seeing what things look like in coming months and years.

Yeah, I didn't overdo it on my end, either. Just dipped my toes in with a small amount of money to get a feel for it all - money I could withstand losing. If I had dived in like some of my friends did - dropping thousands into the market - then I'd be panicking right now. I've lost about 10% of my portfolio since Friday, which sucks, but it ain't my life savings.
I am a lot more worried about looking at my 401k, though. That's the ultimate long game, so I try not to scrutinize my statements when I get them. But that had to take a beating.

Lost over 40% of our 401ks & mutual fund investments in '08. Didn't panic, kept on buying stuff every month & earned it all back & more a couple of years later. We were in our 40s at the time. More conservative now that we're in our 50s.

Re: OT: Investing - Stocks/Mutual Funds/Bonds/Crypto
So, looks like the low threshold for BTC on my end this round was the $5846USD mark. I missed my convervative low buy-in by $346USD. Oh well. I recovered and finished buying in on the $6k - $6.5k uptick. Fascinating to witness each and every time. I will leave this big dip w/ more holdings than when I entered and certainly not as much holding as was possible. It's the nature of the beast. I find it always a better play to have the 3 benchmarks of aggressive/middle/and conservative. I almost always stick to the conservative to not get grabby. Admittedly, this round I saw so much sell pressure I had allocated the majority of my Limit re-up in the middle range at 4-4.5k. I even missed out on my conservative low-end of 5.5k as mentioned. BUT, the point being if the sell/buy pressure flips one must be sober to this fact as ultimately the market trumps all thoughts on what the market is doing or will do.
Now, is the three day lull and lolligagging around that original 61% Retrace. The buy pressure has gained momentum.
And, for those of you who care, the Astrological implications:

VIX (some kind of volatility fund) or VXX (shorts the S&P I think) are both way up. I've been tinkering with the idea of watching these but haven't quite figured out the best way to use them personally.
Read up on these before you do anything. They dont work the way the say they do. Day trade short term if at all. I missed a 300% gain by two weeks, but sold because of the slow/steady declining price of one of them.

Thanks, I watched one of them ( I think VXX) for months and it didn't move like I expected it to with regards to what the market was doing, so eventually I lost interest and moved on to other things.
My initial thought was that we might see an economic melt down with everything that was going on from election time and thought this might be good to look into instead of gold. In the end, I did neither.

What is the easiest fool proof method for someone just wanting to buy stocks here and there? Something like e-trade? Like if I just wanted to randomly buy 100 stocks of whatever company. Nothing extremely serious.

Robinhood charges no commission. Can't beat that. Great for stocks.

Excellent. Looks pretty straight forward too. I'll give that a try. Not looking to go balls deep, but just something ever once in awhile to maybe research some low prices stock and try to learn more in the process.
