On Carmelo's side, he was the better scorer and a first option. I don't think Porter was ever that on those Portland teams. On Porter's side are his intangibles as a good teammate and his defense. I think Porter did a much better job as a second option than Carmelo is doing this year (although age is a factor). I'm not a huge Terry Porter fan but am leaning that way because if I'm building a team I want player who buy into the winning team ethos, which tends to be more about defense and intangibles, the two strong advantages Porter has. Like Doctor MJ, it's hard for me to vote Carmelo over players who were good offensively, even if not as good as Carmelo, but were strong in both defense and intangibles. If Carmelo comes up against a Pete Maravich or Walt Bellamy in this project, then these factors may work in his favor.

RUNOFF VOTE: TERRY PORTER

Starting to feel awfully bad for Melo. Just looked back: this is the 8th consecutive runoff he's been in, and looking like it will be the 8th consecutive one he's lost; with no end in immediate sight either :(.
This is even exceeding the long drought Hal Greer had in runoffs, and is a new record within any of the Top 100 projects, as far as I know.

He's getting closer for me. Though every time I look at VORP or RAPM or even peak WS I struggle to pull the trigger. The idea that he very reasonably has allowed more points due to his defense than any player in the history of the game is a real thing running through my head. Then again being the worst in such metrics, requires one to have been good enough to get the minutes....the counter argument in my head.

I doubt it personally affects him much. It's still during the season and he has other things to worry about. Maybe it affects you and the other Melo supporters who are emotionally invested in him. Look at how long Mel Daniels has had to wait to get a second voter with no end in sight. :D

I'm sitting here trying to figure out why I would pick Melo.

Melo has a lot of good seasons. But he's short of Porter on WS & VORP - and RAPM tells us that Porter was a positive impact player very late into his career.

Melo's Denver #'s looks good - but we know the Nuggets didn't fall back when he left. If you're going to hang your hat on something - it's the fact that he led a very mediocre supporting cast to 54 Wins & a Division Title. I don't know if Porter does that as your best player.

But, Porter was 1B on a 63 Win Portland Team. Porter was the 2nd best player on 2 Finals teams & 1 WCF Team that won 63 games. He did this by playing alongside Clyde Drexler - who is great - but we're not talking a GREAT player. Porter brought a lot to the table & took nothing off. Melo did get to the WCF once as the 2nd best player to Billups - I just don't know if I see him as the 2nd best player on a real contender unless I have a GREAT player next to him.

Ultimately, as I think about who I'd rather have on my team, it's Porter. These aren't guys who you'd want as your best player even at their peak. They can add a lot of value as 2nd bananas, & I'd rather have Porter as my wingman then Melo because:

-Better team results as 2nd banana (and in '91, more 1B than #2)
-Doesn't take anything off the table
-Impact metrics tell aren't excited about Melo - but they are fond of post prime Porter - which lends me to believe that peak/prime Porter was very impactful and moreso than Melo.
-Box Score metrics - aside from PER - point to Porter.

Porter isn't my top choice of the 4 very good point guards left - but I have a lot of respect for him & am glad to see him make the cut.

Thru post #25:

Terry Porter - 4 [5?] (penbeast0, dhsilv2, SactoKingsFan, Outside, [pandrade83])
Carmelo Anthony - 2 (Clyde Frazier, trex_8063)

Calling it for Porter. Will have the next up in a moment.
