George W. Bush: There's clear evidence Russia 'meddled' in 2016 election

Former President George W. Bush said Thursday that there is "pretty clear evidence that the Russians meddled" in the 2016 presidential election, a seeming rebuke of President Donald Trump, who has at times questioned the intelligence community’s assessment that the Kremlin is to blame.

"Whether (Russia) affected the outcome is another question," Bush said at conference in Abu Dhabi, according to a USA Today report. "It’s problematic that a foreign nation is involved in our election system. Our democracy is only as good as people trust the results.”

The president has since conceded that the Russian government was behind the cyberattack but has been decidedly soft in his rhetoric towards the Kremlin, especially relative to his get-tough approach to foreign policy elsewhere around the globe. Trump’s stance on Russia has puzzled U.S. allies and lawmakers from both parties.

Of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who U.S. intelligence agencies have suggested knew of and directed the 2016 cyberattacks, Bush said "He can’t think, ‘how can we both win?’ He only thinks, ‘how do I win, you lose?’”

The Clinton Administration clearly colluded with Boris Yeltsin's campaign in the 90's, and openly bragged about affecting their elections. Russian political counterparties accused Yeltsin of collusion with America, and did nothing. They eventually voted him out.

There's no proof Trump colluded, but even if he did, nothing is going to happen. The system allows fraud. Vote him out.

I know that guys like dckingsfan aren't a fan of this, but like I've been saying this for ever. There's only one party that's demonstrating they're corrupt and willing to throw away the values they claim they stand for just to appease a sociopath. If you want a better government vote Democrat down the ticket. Or this will at least encourage more Republicans with integrity to run for office.

I am not voting for any Rs running for federal government in this election cycle. They haven't governed well and don't deserve my vote.

My problem, is that I have been through this cycle many times - where neither side seems to want to actually govern. The latest bill to keep the government open being a case in point.

Pending investigations are one thing but wouldn't even you concede that the potential interference of a foreign power in our election is worthy of the president's interest?

I mean we're not talking about the investigation of some random white collar crime.

Perhaps. But the point I'm making is that if it is proven that there was deliberate malfeasance and deception in the manner authority was obtained for spying on the Trump campaign, it would be difficult for Obama to distance himself from it.

Perhaps. But the point I'm making is that if it is proven that there was deliberate malfeasance and deception in the manner authority was obtained for spying on the Trump campaign, it would be difficult for Obama to distance himself from it.

Depending on the level of deception I might concede that point .


To be honest, nothing I've heard regarding Carter Page/FISA warrants etc screams "Bigger than Watergate".

Perhaps there's a smoking gun out there but I haven't seen it as of yet.
