If we fire cliff and or cho, what type of replacement do you want?

Post#1 » by JDR720 » Mon Feb 12, 2018 6:25 pm

I think the sizable majority, or maybe even everyone wants to get rid of them but who will replace them? Some seem to want Silas to get a shot, others seem to want a college guy. And what about gm? Haven't really saw anyone mentioned besides mitch kupchak, anyone got gm ideas?

My ideal scenario is a college guy (jay wright or bennett) and an analytics/modern NBA gm who will tell mj to go hit golf balls if he tries to meddle.

Hell no to giving Silas a shot beyond just interim coach to finish the season.

I just want a competent coach. There’s a few that have been mentioned from the college ranks like Tony Bennett, Jay Wright, and Shaka Smart, but it’s pure optimism to even believe that they’ll be interested at this point.

It’s up to the new GM to make the decision. I just hope it’s not a retread coach with experience that’ll likely be stubborn and try to have us playing 1990’s/early 2000’s basketball.

Clean house. That means Clifford and his entire staff, and Cho and everyone else that makes decisions upstairs, and the entire medical staff that keeps allowing players like Batum, MKG, and whoever else play before they're actually ready to play. Fire EVERYONE.

I'm not expecting Morey-ball 2.0 but we need some version of 2010s basketball being played here rather than the 1990s.

I'd love to pluck someone from the Popovich tree. Whether that's Messina, Becky Hammon, or someone else. I'd be happy with that kind of signing.

Shaka Smart? What makes you think he's a competent coach, even at the college level?

That dude does not belong on an NBA sideline.

Tony Bennett I'd be open to.

GM wise - I'm down with someone who is into analytics, but the primary thing needed now is a GM who 1st a great drafter & 2nd is a dealmaker. We need someone who can make good deals with other teams and with player agents. There is going to have to be at least a bit of a teardown in order to right things here and making the right trades and drafting the right guys is going to be more important than ever. I'm OK with the idea of Kupchak.

Coach wise I'm hoping for someone in touch with the modern NBA and isn't going to give us stuff like the Alfence or tell the guys to DIG when the other team is killing us with 3s - but the biggest priority is someone who is committed to player development. I'm reluctant to say college coach. Dunlap was just too much of a cautionary experience to me, though I'll grant Brad Stevens his success. If you do go College coach, then I want someone with NBA experience either as an assistant or a player. Tony Bennett would probably be my guy in that scenario. I'm open to promising NBA assistants as well. We've talked about a few of them in the past. There was a list of some guys here: http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/page/presents18986226/five-nba-coaching-prospects-watch
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

F Brian Shaw. Remember when he wouldn't interview or laughed off the job here before he got a job as a head coach elsewhere and sucked so bad he got fired like halfway through the season. Was it in Denver?

Shaka Smart is a amazing coach and is every bit of competent. He made VCU look like a powerhouse for more than a few years and now he’s running a well oiled machine in Texas. Not saying that he’s ahead of Bennett or Wright but Smart is a good coach with a modern approach that’ll be much better than Clifford if I had to put my stamp of opinion on it.

Lol.

Out of all of them I’d take Mike Brown. Guy got a raw deal. Everywhere he’s coached the team either went to the playoffs or had a better record than the year before. Very under appreciated is what he did with that Cavs team that lacked top end talent alongside LeBron during the early years.

Has Texas even won a single NCAA tourney game under Smart?

IMO, Smart dominated a no name conference with low level talent using a gimicky system. He has one good tourney run to his name. I think he's totally overrated as a coach, evidenced by his inability to do anything at Texas despite having NBA caliber talent on his teams.

A serious question; what has Becky Hammon done as an assistant coach to warrant being our head coach?

I heard she actually shows up to the games, which makes her more capable than what we've had this year

she's a part of the pop coaching tree and has worked plenty internationally and through USA basketball. i don't think she's quite ready for a head coaching gig since she's only 3-4 years in - but if derek fisher can get a shot, anyone can.

but its not like people can pull an assistant coaches resume and say "oh, they developed this player specifically and prevented x guys from being a bust. also, as an assistant they would've called timeouts here, here, and here but they're not allowed to overrule the headcoach. coach argued with ref over good calls for y amount of minutes but argued over bad calls for z minutes. if given the head coach position, would hold optional light practices during back to backs. takes mid-high level risks in regard to in-game adjustments"

same reason i think silas' coaching stint here earlier this year wasn't even a real tryout so much as it was taking care of the store while the manager was out.

I 100% just threw Becky Hammon's name out there as an example of someone who is currently on the Spurs coaching staff who I recognized. I put it out there because nearly everything Gregg Popovich touches becomes successful.

Whomever we hire first as GM needs to be experienced, with demonstrated results running other teams and a track record of making very good draft picks built on talent and BPA. Then, hire a coach who has experience and demonstrates ability to relate to players while developing talent, adapting modern strategy to the talent they had, plus shows solid leadership. There is almost no perfect coach. But every step we’ve taken since the Bobcats has never shown sustained success. I like the idea of Mitch Kupchak as GM, or someone similar that did well.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.
