Re: Who's the better player? Clint Capela or Steven Adams?
I like Adams game a lot. Seems like a cool dude too.
I watch a lot more of Capela though... I couldn't say who is better for sure but what I like a lot about Capela is his ability to switch onto any player 1 - 5 due to his lateral quickness and athleticism... in todays NBA that seems to be particularly important. Old School centers aren't as valuable... new school centers need to be able to play in small ball lineups and switch onto wings or guards.

Adams is better at rebounding. Otherwise Clint is better at just about everything else notably rotating on 3-4 position players, contesting shots and finishing lobs.

Brad Miller, Antonio Davis, Zydrunus Ilgauskas, Jamaal Magloire, Mehmet Okur, Vlade Divac, Dale Davis. Those were the guys next up after the fixtures like Shaq, Yao, D12 and Big Ben. I'm not saying those guys were bad players, but they pale in comparison to the group of centers who were left out of this year's game. And next year is going to bring in more fantastic big man talent including Ayton, Bagley and Bamba. The death of the big man has been called prematurely; in fact the overall talent in big men is probably at an all-time high.
Some of this has to do with the new big men selection rules, no?

The league has definitely switched. In the 2000s it was about SGs, PFs, and some centers.
Look at the championships from 1999-2010. Robinson/Duncan, shaq, bynum/odom/gasol, KG, Ben wallace/rasheed Wallace.
These big men had skills more than Adams or Capela ever dreamed of. Adams or Capela in the 2000s would have been versions of dale Davis and Antonio Davis. Now instead of Kobe playing iso ball or dumping it to Pau/bynum/shaq to make a move, Capela and Adams are running pnr with elite ball handlers getting easy dunks.
Can you ever imagine a team dumping the ball to Capela 15 times a game to get his own shot. They would be terrible.
Now the game revolves around PGs and SFs.
The elite centers were certainly more skilled than the elite centers today.
But don't forget it was big men not only centers. Guys like Webber, KG, Dirk, Duncan, Jermaine O'Neal, Amare, Antonio Mcdyess, rasheed Wallace, gasol, bosh, Karl malone, Elton brand, David west, boozer, Odom, Randolph, Kenyon Martin, Nene.
It felt like a requirement to have an elite big in the 2000s.
So let me be clear, i don't think big men are dead. I think they have evolved to be more efficient around the talent aside them in the league. And the big men, dump it in the post 20+ times a game is certainly dead.

I doubt Capela would have this kind of production without Harden , Harden makes him look like the hall of farmer right now. Place him in some other system without great PG and he would struggle a lot.

Re: Who's the better player? Clint Capela or Steven Adams?
I love Capela but he is just a younger version of DJ - who is more flashy and gets amplified by Harden like DJ by CP3. Adams would have had much better boxscore if playing in Houston. Even Omer Asik had beautiful stats the year he started 70 or so games next to Harden.
One thing Capela beats Adams handsomely - perimeter defense, due to his quickness and agility.

I almost never disagree with Haralabob, but I’ve gotta go with Capela. Adams may be better with the average team, but Capela is PERFECT for that Rockets team. It’s poetry in motion. It’s like asking who’s a better player, DeMar Derozan or Dennis Rodman. Would you rather have someone who’s gonna be pretty good on a lot of teams and be great for terrible teams, or someone who’s going to be less useful in most situations, but has a higher ceiling of being a huge difference maker on a championship. I’d go with the second one.

What, have you seen Adams finishing lobs? He’s a damn beast.

Adams doesn't have the lob radius Capela has. He can finish lobs well but they have to be more accurate than lobs to Capela

The All-Star appearances by those centers were from an era where there had to be at least 2 centers per conference, whereas today, the front court designation makes it such that there don't have to be any who make the All-Star game. Moreover, I disagree that the All-Star snubs this year wipe the floor with guys like Divac or Okur.
I agree that there are a lot of promising bigs today, though.

Capela now and going forward. He is the archetype for the modern day center.
Adams is a bit bigger and the stronger of the two.
But Capela is slightly younger, more athletic, a better rim protector, and more versatile on offense and defense.
Also I think Steven Adams is pretty much the player he's going to be while Capela's ceiling has yet to be determined.

Re: Who's the better player? Clint Capela or Steven Adams?
So according to the poll, Adams is better than Capela? But I thought Westbrook didn’t have enough help?
The narrative was Oladipo and Adams were scrubs, and Gordon and Capela were a better supporting cast.
But now where back to Adams and Oladipo being good again, right? Which narrative do you want to use now?

I'm not sure if you guys are overrating Adams that much or underrating capela that much.
Capela is a legit DPOY candidate. Adams is just an average starting center .
This is not even a close comparison this year.

No, he's not. He's ok on defense but he's nowhere near elite. Adams is a much better defender. Cllint is powerless to C's like Whiteside, KAT. They have their way with him
Adams size is his biggest strength, which is irrelevant since there are no dominant big men.
In today’s league you have a center that has length and athleticism, that can also catch lobs on offense and switch on pick n rolls on defense like Capela.
This is what happens when you Adams has to switch on defense. Capela is a modern nba big, Adams isn’t.

His size definitely isn't irrelevant, we saw Adams be a huge problem for the Warriors just a couple years ago. I'm much more wary of Adams as a Spurs fan since LMA tends to get whatever he wants when Capela is on him, but Adams's size really bothers him.

I disagree with you that Adams size is irrelevant as there are no dominant big men. That can mean he has a matchup advantage. Did you see what he did to Tristan Thompson last night in the Cavs games? Having a real center when the other team doesn't can be an advantage in itself.
I voted Adams, though I love both players. I could be proven wrong in a year, but I think the Capela as Deandre Jordan metaphor is apt though that's not necessarily a knock. I love Adams screens and offensive rebounding, but it is hard to ignore Capela's superiority as a perimeter defender. Ultimately, I chose Adams just for the eye test of how much he seems to be influencing the game when I watch him. He always seems to be doing something to be creating havoc.

Adams has to be damn good to still be better with how great Capela's been playing. Yeah, even Thunder fans have to admit, its gotten pretty ridiculous.ocelot17 wrote:So according to the poll, Adams is better than Capela? But I thought Westbrook didn’t have enough help?

I think it just comes down to both of them better fits for their respective teams and the matchups against the opposing teams. Both are really good, but one has to think, it has to be Capela going forward though. I see Adams as a finished product.MarcusBrody wrote:ocelot17 wrote:Rednation91 wrote:No, he's not.
