Spurs get a chance at 2 lotto picks, one maybe being top 5, and a rising star in Dunn who could thrive with Pop’s coaching.

The Spurs say no. You don't trade a 26 year old superstar. Their hopes would be that one of the two picks turns out to be as good as Kahwi (or better) which is doubtful.

Unless Kawhi is hurt and they think he won't be the same player going forward. If that's the case I'm not sure if the Bulls would want him.

I say yes. Spurs say no.

Sure seems like he wants out and the Spurs may need to listen to offers this offseason. Especially if hes choosing to sit out the rest of the year. IF he is made available, I would hope we pursue him and think we have the assets to have a shot at landing him.

I think this is the key. I would substitute our 2020 1st for Dunn...despite our love of KD, I think another 1st would look better - or Portis.

I realize that this forum just has insane ideas of what trades work and what dont, but if NBA trade history as told us anything that whenever a top player is moved that the initial reaction is the team that traded him away didn't get near enough fair value.

And if Kawhi really is on the outs with SA he's coming off a year where he hasn't played due to a lingering injury and goes into next year as a free agent. I believe that really hurts his value, and probably puts him in PG13 and Butler realm of an initial return.

The Spurs are the prototypical model of an organization. They'll get this under control. They had Aldridge wanting out, now he's having a great season and appears happy. In the end, I'll be extremely surprised if Kawhi and them don't make up.

I agree with others that San Antonio will figure it out and Kawhi will stay but...

if he really does want out we could offer a pretty good package come draft night (or during next season). We could offer a package of expiring contracts, young players, and draft picks for him. In all honesty, we could probably offer one of the better deals in the NBA for him.

Lopez, Holiday, and Asik are $26m in expiring contracts (Asik carries $3m into 2019 season but that's a pretty small amount)
Dunn, Portis, Valentine, Payne, Grant are young players (to audition or cut) if they wanted some prospects back
and we own all of our 1st round picks to sweeten the deal

I'm assuming if San Antonio wanted to dump contracts then they would add Gasol back with Leonard. Pau is owed $17m next year and $16m in 2019 (but only $6.7m guaranteed). SAS is capped out right now, so dumping some contracts seems like a good idea. They have a lot of young guards on their roster, so they might not want Dunn (or LaVine). They might also want to dump Rudy Gay ($9m 2019) or Danny Green ($10m 2019) but I doubt it They are serviceable and would only be making back up money on expiring deals.
__________________________

So something like (draft night deal):
Bulls get:
Kawhi Leonard
Pau Gasol

SAS gets:
Lopez
Asik
Holiday
NOP 2018 1st round pick
Bulls 2019 1st round pick

This gives SAS 2 extra 1st round picks in the next 2 drafts, and about $50m in free cap space going into to 2019-20 season as Gay, Green and Ginobili also expire with Lopez, Holiday and Asik. This is the rebuilding path for them. If they go this route then they probably try to move Aldridge at some point.

_____________________________

Maybe they see something in LaVine (after he signs his extension) that they like and they want to pair him with Patty Mills and Aldridge as their new core:
Bulls get:
Kawhi Leonard
Pau Gasol

SAS gets:
Lopez
LaVine
(one of Portis, Valentine, Payne, or Grant whoever they prefer)
NOP 2018 1st round pick

This gives SAS LaVine as a young gunner, Portis (probably) to audition, an extra 1st round pick, and a serviceable big in Lopez who expires. As a bonus, Aldridge played his best basketball next to Lopez in Portland so he'd be happy.

SAS Roster
PG- Mills/Murray
SG- LaVine/Green/Ginobili
SF- Gay/Anderson
PF- Aldridge/Portis
C- Lopez/Portis

With 2 1st additional rounders to round it out. I actually kind of like that roster for them once they use one of those picks on a young center. That's be a pretty good sell I think.

Our roster would look like this:
PG- Dunn/Payne
SG- Holiday/Nwaba(if retained)
SF- Leonard/Valentine
PF- Markkanen/Vonleh(if retained)
C- Felicio/Asik

Clearly we use our 1st round pick on a Center or try to find one in FA. We could probably use an upgrade at SG too but there are a ton of those on the market this year. Sign Marcus Smart at SG and Deandre Jordan at C in free agency?!? Imagine that defense :P jk

2017: Bulls trade elite wing for young assets.
2018: Bulls trade young assets for elite wing.

Hmm....Let's not go down that route.

As long as we hang onto Lavine and Lauri...then why not? Kahwi>>>Jimmy by a fair amount IMO. We build around Kahwi, Lauri, and Lavine, and would be serious contenders to win the East down the road.

So you think Kahwi is better, but the Bulls will trade much less for him than they got for Butler?

Not to mention his contract expires after a year. Doesn't make much sense.

Kawhi is going to get traded at the draft.

Such a weird scenario. I think I’d wait and see if he is a UFA next summer. Don’t want to spend good assets on a DRose mental basket case.

I'd take a swing. 2 1sts, expirings plus anyone not Lauri or Lavine (maybe not Dunn). It's an expensive 1 year deal, but if we kept our pick this year (so include NOP pick and our next year pick), it wouldn't be crippling. I know this has been a long-term injury, but I've never heard of a chronic quad problem - maybe slow healing, but it's not a knee.

Woj reporting a "tremendous disconnect" between Kawhi and Spurs. One year left on his deal and he's not playing this year despite Pop apparently wanting him too...sounds like he's gone one way or the other. And we're positioned to move. Whose offering a better deal than our first and the Pelicans first?

The problem with this is that it requires him to choose us over everyone else in FA. If we trade for him then we get him guaranteed. Via trade is probably the only realistic way we can land him.

? , Valentine, Nwaba, Vonleh, Felicio

Here is the deal for Leonard

Bulls trade 2018 #1 (#7), NOP pick (#14), Portis to SA
Bulls trade Valentine to Lakers
Bulls get Leonard and Mills (then trade Grant or Payne for a 2nd rd pick)

Lakers trade Deng, Clev pick, Bulls 2019 2nd rd pick and 2019 or 2020 unprotected pick to SA
Lakers get Valentine, more cap space for FA

SA trades Leonard and Mills to Bulls
SA gets #7, #14, #25, Portis, Laker future pick, 2nd rd pick of Bulls and Deng

SA tanks for 2 years while other deals expire

It's a good idea, but Philly needs a shooter if they actually trade Fultz. And they really need a shooter who can catch and shoot, not another player who needs the ball in their hands. Neither of our most talented young guards (Dunn, Lavine) are players I think Philly would be that interested in.
