Re: 2018-2019 Roster speculation
Im thinking something like:
1. James 35.30 million
2. George 30.30
3. Ball 7.46
4. Deng (stretched) 7.36
Ingram 5.76
Kuzma 1.69
Hart 1.66
Bryant 1.38
1st round pick 2.30
Minimum roster hold 0.83
Minimum roster hold 0.83
Not sure if i have the accurate numbers for 1st round pick and minimum holds, but this leaves us with 6.13 million in cap space. I would offer this to Brook Lopez and hope that he take it. Lebron probably tells the Lakers to use it on Noel though, which would be good too. Im not too familiar with the the draft class but, maybe we get somebody like Aaron Holiday from UCLA with the 24th pick? He shot 42% from 3 on 2.3 makes per game while dishing out 5.8 assists and playing good defense I think. I haven't seen any UCLA games this year though so idk, his shot could be uglier than Lonzo's if all I know. But if he is a good shooter, he might be a good fit. Then, with the room exception, which is about 4.5 million I think I would try and go for a decent to good rebounder or 3 and D big, depending on what kind of big we sign with the cap room (Lopez and Noel are almost polar opposites) that would fit. We would need to replenish the lack of rebounding with the departure of Randle and Nance. If we draft a rebounder, than maybe we spend the money on a point guard. It also helps that we have great rebounding guards.

Say we DON'T get Paul George and LeBron James this summer. Both sign multi year extensions with their current teams. Also, Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler re-sign with the extensions they're eligible for.
Would anyone call up ol' friend Mitch Kupchak and offer to absorb Nicholas Batum's contract, as long as Malik Monk was coming back as well? Batum is someone who can play and only 29 years old. I think he'd be perfect for the way a Luke Walton team plays. Say we give up a future lottery protected 1st round pick and no salary and Monk & Batum just slide into our cap space.
PG: Lonzo Ball [7.4M) /
SG: Josh Hart (1.7M)/ Malik Monk (3.5M)/
SF: Brandon Ingram (5.7M)/ Nicholas Batum (24M)/
PF: Kyle Kuzma (1.7M)/ Luol Deng (18M)
C: Julius Randle (12M)/ Ivica Zubac (1.6M)/ Thomas Bryant (1.4M)/
- Still $22M in cap space to add to roster
We could re-sign Julius Randle and build on the young core. Also, if we re-sign Randle to a decent contract (10-15M) per season and wait to stretch Deng until after 2018-2019, and fill out the roster with 1 year deals, we would still have a max spot (+ more) going into the 2019 off-season should anyone want to join the young core.
Thoughts?
Lakers removing themselves from 2019 and 2020 FA for Batum? Better ways of spending 30 million a year in cap space than on average players.

Under this scenario, we'd still have around 40-45M in cap space in 2019. That certainly wouldn't eliminate us. The cap jumps from 101M to 107M in 2019.
I think it would allow us to add to our young core, while taking on a bad contract. And there's certainly worse players you can get on bad contracts than Batum. He can actually play and help the team, unlike Deng and Mozgov.

LeBron and George in '18-'19 or Kawhi and George in '19-'20
When Magic and Pelinka first got onboard the Lakers front office I think their main goal was to sign Lebron and Paul George this summer. When the kids seemingly develop fast enough and with George seemingly enamored with OKC, Magic shifted the focus to the summer of '19 when Kawhi Leonard and Klay Thompson become available. There were reports about George signing a 1 and 1 with OKC. Kawhi not being happy in San Antonio. Then both the Cavs and OKC took a dip in Jan/Feb and the Lakers readjusted to opening up cap space in '18 and be open with the original plan. Everything is fluid and in flux.
My question. What would you prefer? Get LBJ and PG13 and start winning right away next season. Or push it off one season, let Ball (who has missed a bunch of his rookie season already), Ingram, Kuzma, Hart, Randle (maybe still here) develop more by themselves with no pressure and more freedom and then sign 2 younger max free agents next offseason?

LeBron and PG13. I wouldn't chase Leonard, he is so injury-prone. The King would instantly make us a contender but how much gas is left on his tank?

Would Lebron be down to gain 15-20 lbs and be more of a permanent 4/smallball 5 a la Draymond? I remember Kobe did that one year and just beasted people on the block all day. Lebron's frame seems more suited to put on weight. I think this would help extend his career. I really get the feeling if he comes here, it's so that he can play out the rest of his career in LA until his son is drafted and plays a couple years with him.
Ball (32) Vet (16)
Ingram (16) Hart (32)
George (32) Ingram (16)
Lebron (16) Kuzma (32)
Vet (20) Lebron (14) ZuBryant (14)
That is a matchup nightmare for anyone including GS

How so? I mentioned in the OP that Magic and Pelinka is probably reacting to whats transpiring, whats being possibly said in the back channels and that everything is a fluid situation. And then I asked what individual board members preferred.
I think George and Kawhi in '19 is the best scenario. It gives Ingram, Ball and Kuzma another season to establish themselves. Depending on how Ingram further develops the next season and a half, he might become a star. Ball and Kuzma get plenty of shots and opportunities to run the offense. Having to cede to PG13 right now might mute their growth a little bit. Plus Lakers have their own pick next year in a less weighted lottery. Just missing the playoffs while playing the youngs guys wont be so crushing.
Kawhi, George, Ingram, Ball, Kuzma, Hart, Zubac, Bryant, '18 late 1st, '19 mid 1st. Lot of length, lot of defense, lot of players able to spread the floor, lot of potential. And by then the top Western Conference teams might be broken up or on the downside.

If George says yes, we sign him, we don't say no
If LeBron says yes, we sign him, there is no saying "thanks but no thanks, we're going to wait for Kawhi."
It's like those if yes, if no graphics, there is no choice but to wait for yes, and if no, we're railroaded to the next FA and waiting for a yes/no

PG13 ... Only because we don't need no 30+ year olds on the end of the career, we need stars who are under 30 and can run and gun for the nex 5+ years:)
Pg13 OR bust.
Wait for 2019 if PG or no one comes.
Honestly I doubt LBJ has any interest in LA Only way he comes is if Family has a say in it and they convince - The west is too tough for him unless his teaming up with 2-3 other stars and we can only afford 2 our young squad + another star player isn't enough to enticeLBJ at least hope so:)

Re: LeBron and George in '18-'19 or Kawhi and George in '19-'20
As the great Kanye West said:
"Beggers can't be chooser this ain't chipotle"....meaning, if Lebron and George are willing to sign this summer, you take it without a doubt and run.
That being said, OP said which do you prefer, and in terms of fit, age, etc, PG and Leonard are obviously a better fit (ironically would have played together if the Pacers didn't trade Leonard for George Hill), assuming, and it's a big assumption, that Leonard is healthy.
I don't think Leonard is going anywhere, but hypothetically, let's say the Spurs put him on the block this summer (and he as a expiring, he says I'll only resign with the Lakers), so basically we're in dream world, but lets say that happens.
Would another team offer a better deal for a rental than a Deng/Ingram/Kuz/first rounder? Because in that scenario we would still have nearly enough capspace to to sign PG and Lebron, while keeping Lonzo, Hart, Bryant, and Zubac.
Goddamn that Deng deal...it makes me wonder if Mitch and co outbid themselves, not just in terms of money, but in terms of year. If the Deng deal was one year shorter, he actually would be very tradable right now in addition to assets.

You bring up some interesting scenarios...
I would trade Ingram/Kuz/1st for a healthy Kawhi. But I wouldnt trade Ingram/Kuz/1st for LeBron. I think Ingram has a good chance to be special. I'd rather wait for Kawhi in '19. That gives the Lakers '18-'19 season to assess how he rebounds from his injury. And you dont have to give up the young core. Getting Kawhi and George for just cap space makes the Lakers young, athletic and deep. Dont want to give that up if you dont have to.

I'm going to be as completely honest as I can with this and give my basketball knowledge.
There is no way and I mean no way the Lakers are getting Klay Thompson I posted in here about how he likes the Warriors he likes Oakland and he is an OC guy and he put out the statement that he wants to be with the Warriors.
I have no idea what Kawaii would do. but no indecations are that he wants anything to do with the Lakers. probably would try to go play with AD or the Clippers.
To be honest. the 2019 stuff is a joke it's far fetched. The Lebron stuff is real. Lonzo needs to be at a place where Lebron feels comfortable playing with him. and Lebron would like to come here. the Cleveland stuff is basically they are moving from him. So if we get Paul George then Lebron is coming. and I think we will get Paul George. he looks like he is coming. looks like that was agreed upon by him and Magic last Season. and yeah They Tampered. so we should sign those two. the two superstars are Lebron and this seasons stars we will not be getting superstars so if it's not this season superstars we will not be signing anybody and we will be screwed. so it better be about Paul George and Lebron James simple as that. all this other crap is just speculation. Magic and Rob you said these superstars and these are the superstars we want. get it done. bring the Superstars to the Lakers.
