good article...did you see the links that compared his mechanics from 06 to 07 and the drop in velocity. It was pretty interesting stuff. As well as comparing his mechanics to Jaret Wright. He makes a good case that his mechanics don't resemble clemens. That kind of scared me.

The drop in velocity isn't a cause for concern for me. Hughes wasn't throwing 95 mph until VERY late in the season last year, when he struck out 13 in the AA postseason. Nardi Contreras called his fastball that night a plus-plus fastball and he even hit 96 mph. But that was only because it was late in the season and he had incredible arm strength at that point. The video from '07 is pretty early in the season, which is when Hughes sits 91-93 (as he did in the early part of '06). Plus the radar guns are always different. It's an inexact science, but nothing that would concern me. Hughes' mechanics are very, very clean and compact.
