Worst Draft Class?

Post#1 » by wudupp » Fri Mar 2, 2018 12:04 pm

there was a thread talking about DLO being a bust and i went to look at that draft and theres only 3 guys that we can all definitively say will be allstars: towns, KP and Booker.
So that got me wondering if there has been a draft class that didnt produce any allstars ever, i would consider that the worst draft class. Or has every draft produced at least one all star..obv 2016 and 2017 draft we dont need to mention as it is early and we will see Ben next year in the all star game

3 guys definitely becoming Allstars is kinda solid, I think? You have those 3 guys and behind that you have lots of good/solid NBA players: Myles Turner, Trey Lyles, Frank Kaminsky, Bobby Portis, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Kelly Oubre, Norman Powell, Josh Richardson, Willy Hernangomez.

Compare that for example to 2014, there you only have Joel Embiid as clear All-Star. Well, there are still lots of good players, that are no All-Stars but at least good NBA players.

2013 was pretty weak. Anthony Bennet, Otto Porter, Cody Zeller, Nerlens Noel, Ben McLemore, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Trey Burke were all drafted top 10, while C.J. McCollum and Victor Oladipo (him only since this season) are the only exceptional players in there. Of course Antetokounmpo was picked 15th and for example Dennis Schröder at 17 resulted also in a good player.

Or look at 2000. Kenyon Martin went 1st, after that not so many even Starter caliber players were drafted.

2000 was a very bad draft.
1 All Star Game for Kenyon Martin.
1 All Star Game for 2nd round pick Michael Redd.

2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th picks were busts.
Mike Miller, Jamal Crawford, Hedo T, Q Rich and Mo Pete were the other best players in the draft.

1971 was a weak draft.

Found this in the 2000 Draft wiki page so you can take it how you see it I guess.
"Sports Illustrated named this entire draft class (as opposed to individual players) the 6th biggest bust of the modern era – making it the only draft class among the site's top 20 list. Just before the 2009 draft, ESPN.com columnist David Schoenfield wrote a piece in which he rated all of the drafts since the institution of the draft lottery in 1985, and the only draft which he gave the lowest possible grade of "F" was the 2000 draft. Using the WARP (wins above replacement player) metric, the 2000 NBA draft class collectively produced at a rate of 17.3 wins worse than a group of "average replacement players", effectively making 2000 the only draft class in NBA history to leave the NBA talent pool worse off than it had been prior to the given year's rookie draft."

I was definitely going to say 2000 was the worst draft...I can't really think of anyone big from that draft with longetivity besides maybe Jamal Crawford. Most of those guys were ran out of the league really early.

Even the so called all-stars were out really early.

2000 hands down the worst. It'll never be touched.

I recall somebody posting on reddit,a couple of years ago, a splendid ,and graphically pleasing, analysis of the best and worst drafts on the basis of TOT WinShares x draft and VORP I believe. I don't have the link though. yeah 2000 was a top 3 worst. You don't even need the numbers :D

In most of our "era". I assume 95% most people on these message boards are ages 16-60? So if we got back 40 years. 2000 class is pretty bad nba draft year. I don't think we can give a consensus on a nba draft class for at least 5 years. So 2012/2013 nba class would be last class I would evaluate. I think we need to focus just on the top 10 picks overall for an nba class draft picks. So including diamonds in a needle stack (John Stockton/Giannis) should be excluded. Afterall, all these nba teams tank to get high draft picks.

2013 is the worst. Yes you have Giannis who is a future MVP caliber player (well, already is), who else? Plus the overall quality is so bad. There are guys in this picture who are already stuck on the bench of rebuilding teams. That's how bad it is.

2000 is a close second imo.

There is no one in the 2000 draft is at the level of 18 Oladipo or 18 Giannis. This draft just had a bunch of players that were late bloomers. Its also the reason we shouldn't jump to conclusions so quick on players especially in thier first 3 years. Also you dont realize how bad 2000 was it was REALLY bad

Who else? He already told you who else in the post you quoted. Oladipo, McCollum, Adams, Porter. You cant put together a group from 2000 that touches that.

Yeah I'm not seeing how 2000 is better than 2013. OH I forgot to mention Rudy Gobert, that really puts it over the top.

Yeah, this is a strange thread and this is the weirdest point within it. What do people expect of an average draft? Statistically speaking, any draft with a surefire HOF guy (Giannis), an all-NBA level guy (Gobert), and 2 other all-stars (Oladipo, McCollum) is safe from any 'worst ever' threads. And there are a handful of above average starters too (Adams, Porter, Schroeder), plus a bunch of other solid rotation players (Zeller, KCP, Olynk, Snell, Dieng, THJ, Plumlee, Roberson, Crabbe).

It's a weird draft in that the top 9 picks were all disappointments, but taken together it's decent if maybe a little below average. I also get the sense that we haven't seen the best of some of these guys yet too.

2013 was an above average draft class, problem was the order of picks was completely screwed up.
