We "Don't" Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread

Monk is just like Lou without any of the offense.

Do you not remember the couple of 20pt games Monk had earlier in the season before Batum returned? LouWill didn’t have a single 20pt game until his 3rd season in the NBA.

At that point our coaching staff should have started actually trying to incorporate him into a small role to take advantage of his scoring/shooting talents, since that is one of our biggest weaknesses, but predictably they decided that they had to completely cut him from the rotation asap to give MCW as big of a role as possible. Its kind of maddening to think about. We've tolerated so many crappy defenders over the years, but we can't incorporate Monk at all and try to take advantage of a few of his scoring outbursts to steal wins?

After that game that Porzingis blew by Monk for the game winner I don’t think Clifford ever wanted to play him again. Oddly that was when we were playing some of our best ball, just had some tough losses due to blown leads.

I'm trying to think if any player has ever been this horrible in his rookie year and gone on to even become a valuable role player on a team... He's probably the worst player in the NBA this year...

Glen Rice, Michael Redd, Scott Skiles, Reggie Jackson, Gary Harris, Terry Rozier, Spencer Dinwiddie, etc.

And out of all of them Monk has the most pts per 36 minutes and the highest FG%.

I'm a Monk fan and liked the pick. I still think he's got a shot to become a great scorer. But he's got a lot further to go than most of you seem to think.

I think you’re leaving out the part that Monk has to had been a former bench player for a former championship caliber team i.e. Belinelli (Spurs), Maxiell (Pistons), Neal (Spurs), Hibbert (Pacers).

Monk showed he could put up points in bunches at times when he was getting minutes early in the year. Still a very flawed player right now, but I think with a full offseason, and a new coach (hopefully) we'll see Monk in that 6th man role that we wanted to see him in this year.

I still think Batum as the backup PG (or at least playing with the subs for stretches) is the way we should have gone this year. Would have let Monk look for his shot on offense and solved the size problem of Monk at SG on D. As a bonus it would have given Lamb a chance to build on his breakout season

Monk has no confidence after Clifford doghoused him. Our commentators say he doesn't lack confidence but it is easy to see. He needs playing time, hopefully the Celtics game is a harbinger of things to come the rest of this season for Monk. Like I said in the GT he isn't going to learn anything glued to the bench. That he only took three threes in significant playing time is a sign of progress for me (if he comes out and fires 10+ threes next chance he gets will be the test, he's checked in and taken three+ Ill advised threes in garbage time like even under the three minute fourth quarter timeout), missing all of his two pointers sucked though. He won't ever be MKG on defense but if he can find his swag and shot back we still have a good player. Putting in big time work this summer is also a must for Malik. As for Mitchell I'm not going to even attempt to argue your point there because there is no argument to be made but no use crying over spilled milk.

I dont think we should play him any until we are eliminated from the playoff race. There is still a glimmer of hope and its just insulting to the fanbase to play Malik Monk right now when we need to win games.

Im all for playing him 30 mins/night after elimination in a few weeks. Ideally, I'd like to see him show some life and perhaps make him tradeable in the offseason. Perhaps someone would take him on as a reclamation project before he loses all of his value.

If not we just keep him another year and if he doesn't show any progress we can cut him. I wouldn't pick up his 3rd year option if he doesn't dominate summer league and show significant progress that is for sure.

Monk has poor shot selection. He needs to get going with some spot up shots. But it won’t happen if he’s not part of the rotation. This team needs to make some moves and free up space for Monk and his rookie scale contract next year.

Unfortunately we made the dumb mistake of struggling to try to get the 8th seed so we can get swept out of the playoffs again. If we had traded and made moves to rebuild and dumped Cliff with Cho we could already be seeing if we have anything in Monk. I still have zero problems with Monk over Mitchell at this point because we haven't had a chance to see if Monk can do anything yet. He is a little younger and less experienced but I think he still has a ton of potential.

His mental approach worries me.

Without a doubt in my mind I’m sure Monk would be playing at a respectable level had he continued to get consistent playing time like he did earlier in the season. Everyone from Lonzo Ball, De’Aaron Fox, to Donovan Mitchell struggled in the beginning but after a couple months of getting adjusted to the NBA game they’re all playing well.

The sad part is that we might be in the playoffs had we kept Monk in the rotation playing 20 something minutes per game like we did earlier in the season.

Our coach plays favorites and if you aren’t one of his shiny pieces going into the season or end up in his doghouse for whatever reason he’ll show his ass by putting his pride over winning. We don’t play our best skilled players besides Kemba nearly as much as we should.

Lamb leads the East in scoring off the bench and he’s our second best scorer but he barely sniffs over 20 minutes a game.
