Why would you not want to contend as early as possible? I mean I get that it's unlikely, but you're saying a team shouldn't want it to happen. Why not? The mid 90s magic and the okc team of like 6 years ago were both very young contenders.
Like rememberlu alluded to, this may be semantics. There are basically three levels of competitive status for nba teams:
1. Trying to lose (tanking). This step for us may be done after this season, and maybe should be, as we're not bad enough to project to having a real high pick next year.
2. Conserving cap space by not committing too much to the wrong players too early, waiting for the right time yo go to step three. This step is likely to last for a few years but there's no reason to want it to.
3. Going all in, which means spending as much as possible and locking yourself into the best roster you can, and hoping for the best.
