The attendance sucks because the team sucks; it sucked at the Palace too. Teams leave because their attendance sucks when the team is good, i.e. the market they’re in doesn’t care about the team. The Pistons were the hottest ticket in town when they were good and there’s no reason to believe that wouldn’t be the case if the team got really good again.
Not to mention that Detroit is still a major sports market city. There are cities you think of that the leagues would never approve teams moving from like New York, LA (teams move from there because there are too many of them), Chicago, Philly, etc. From a sports standpoint Detroit is still one of those cities.
