Agreed. I feel like you really have to be a kid at heart to enjoy hip hop. A lot of adults will get hung up on a word or phrase and hate on the song or artist. But in reality, most hip hop songs are about themes that are very prevalent in society. Kids are much better at recognizing and identifying with these themes than some adults who may be out of touch. It also helps that kids recognize slang, pop culture references and urban phrases a lot better than these adults do. So lines referencing that stuff will resonate with the younger generation more.
Also, good point about hip hop being for non-musicians. A lot of people forget that before these modern day beats and fancy productions came out, hip hop was really based on spoken word. The lyrics define hip hop, not the music. In fact, some of the purest form of rap happens during rap battles where there's no beat at all. It's all about using your words in a rhythm to convey your message. A lot of rappers use recognized poetry techniques such as iambic pentameter in their raps. Iambic pentameter has commonly been used in poetry for centuries and was popularized by Shakespeare in his plays.

Nice reference here, delanka. As we can see in Eminem's first verse, he's using iambic pentameter in his rhymes. Notice the stresses on the words.
His PALMS are SWEATy, KNEES weak, ARMS are HEAVy
There's VOmit ON his SWEATer alREADy, mom's spaGHETTi
He's NERVous, but ON the SURFace he LOOKS calm and READy
To DROP BOMBS, but HE keeps ON forGETtin
What HE wrote DOWN, the WHOLE crowd GOES so LOUD
He OPens his MOUTH, BUT the WORDS won't come OUT
He's CHOKin, how EVeryBODy's JOKin NOW
The CLOCK'S run OUT, TIME'S up OVer, BLOah!

His kid Chris definitely got talent but can't seem to break through. Shadow of his pops is too big. Here goes a couple of more bangers from the old man.
